Koush (Creator of ROM Manager and CWM Recovery) is creating a tethering app that prevents the detection from the carriers and is looking for feedback:

https://plus.google.com/103583939320...ts/Pe3VVGedTWw

https://plus.google.com/103583939320...ts/1Yy1jb9z4TA

ClockworkMod Tether Alpha

Over the last month, I've been working on a new app. Tether Alpha is a USB[2] tether solution for Mac, Windows, and Linux that allows you to use your phone's data connection to get internet access on your desktop or laptop.

ClockworkMod Tether does not require root on your phone and does not require a separate tethering plan. Tether should work with any carrier and phone, and is not blockable or detectable by carriers[1]. To get around the root requirement on your phone, Tether will need to install a virtual network adapter on your computer; so there is a PC side install. [3]

I'm looking for meaningful feedback in the following areas:

1) Did you have problems installing it or getting it working? (If so, operating system? Ie, Windows 7 64 bit, etc)
2) How is your download speed once everything is set up?

The UI is pretty rough, the icons, and general app design are not final. I am just looking to make sure the underlying services all work properly.

Download links:

Mac (10.6/10.7): http://download.clockworkmod.com/test/tether-mac.zip
Linux: http://download.clockworkmod.com/test/tether-linux.tgz [4]
Windows (Windows XP/Vista/7): http://download.clockworkmod.com/tes...ndowsSetup.msi

The above links should automatically install the Android portion if you have USB debugging enabled on the phone, but if something goes awry, here's the Android APK:
http://download.clockworkmod.com/test/Tether.apk

I am intentionally not providing any installation instructions, because I feel that if the app can't be set up without installation instructions, I have failed to make it easy enough to use.
So please provide any feedback you may have if you have a hiccup during installation! (The final market released product will have instructions though)

This version will time bomb on January 7th. I'll release new versions before then, so if the app stops working, just check back here.

Thanks all!

[1] It functions as a proxy, and not as a NAT/masquerade solution that other tether solutions use. Though carriers can still check for http user agent string, but I have an idea to work around that. They typically check the TTL for desktop values. All usual carrier data charges and quotas will apply, but you will not need a separate tethering plan.

[2] I'm working on getting Bluetooth working as well.

[3] I wish I could not require a PC side installation, but it is simply not possible if the phone is not rooted.

[4] There is no UI for the Linux interface. Just sudo linux/run.sh after extracting the zip.
It may not work on all phones and is the reason why he posted it to try out. I just use the built in tethering options and use a user agent spoofer. Also, I attempt not to use too much bandwidth which is what I really think causes you to be red flagged by the carrier. I've been doing it for a while without a tethering plan and haven't gotten the dreaded text yet so maybe I'm just lucky.

I had the same concerns, and test drove a cardboard mockup for a week or so first. It's extremely pocketable, although I'd have to say if it it was a centimeter longer it would definitely be an issue.

Its about time they went to touch controls for CWM. Ive been running TWRP for awhile now and love being able to use touch controls instead of the volume and power buttons.

Galaxy Nexus LTE coming to Sprint in February?

http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/05/g...-sprint-rumor/

Supposedly it'll be clocked at 1.5 GHz too which may or may not be a typo. Also there is rumor that T-Mobile and ATT variants will be coming out soon after Sprint's version.

Galaxy Note is coming to AT&T officially:

If there were still any lingering doubts that the Samsung Galaxy Note tabphone is headed stateside to join AT&T's lineup, these press shots should probably put them to rest. Going by model number SGH-I717, AT&T's version of the Gingerbread-powered Note -- likely to be revealed in a few short days at CES -- will reportedly maintain the class-leading 5.3-inch, 1280x800 Super AMOLED display and 1.4GHz dual-core Exynos processor that have made it unusually popular overseas. We're also expecting another high definition, LTE-capable handset from Samsung to hit AT&T in the near future, the SGH-i957 Celox HD.

As far as a release goes, we suspect that the February 14th date stamped on the screen of these images is probably as good a guess as any.
Source: http://pocketnow.com/android/samsung...s-shots-images

Looks like it'll be similar to the international version just adds NFC and no LTE.

Well this is interesting. It seems Samsung really is building a "Value Pack" for the Galaxy S as noted earlier in articles and then denied a few days after. XDA got a hold of an early build of the Value Pack which includes Face Unlock, the newer TouchWiz lockscreen, Galaxy S II Photo Editor, faster Camera and a few other things:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1431596

Think I'm gonna flash this on my i9000 just for fun.

My Diztronic v3 case came in with a brand new screen protector that goes edge to edge. Not sure if I'll apply it still as I'm getting used to using the phone without one and so far no scratch. Just gotta keep it away from sand and other sharp objects. lol. The open cutout for the volume is perfect. Build quality is about the same as the original I received.

Im not sure if this is strictly due to the kernel or the rom Im running, but if I force stop the camera the phone would go into deep idle more often. Others have mentioned that as well.

My Galaxy Nexus battery is awesome right now. But then again, I'm running a custom ROM and kernel. lol. Franco has tweaked the kernel to make one of the cores go to sleep when the display turns off and turn on immediately when it turns back on saving even more battery life. And my phone is insanely fast. It keeps getting faster with each kernel and ROM update. Bigxie just added the Quick Widget toggles from TouchWiz and Cyanogenmod ROMs so no more need for Widgetsoid.

I wish Franco would came back to the NS and build a kernel for ICS

Ezekeel is good, but Franco compiled all his tweaks then worked his magic and made it so much better.

I think he still has his Nexus S. He'll probably start working on an updated kernel for it once he gets the Galaxy Nexus to where he wants it at which I'm sure he's pretty close. I'm running at Conservative and man my phone is flying. All the microlags I complained about in my first review of the phone are gone. The phone is smooth as butter and battery life is excellent. I haven't tried the other governors because its just that good and usually Conservative is the slowest of the governors.

What!! Franco left NS!! NOO lol I liked his kernels, I'm still stock but I'll go back to custom ROM/Kernel eventually.

I was browsing xda and i saw a thread of someone complaining as to why there were like 50 ICS roms are there really that many right now??

would you say custom ROM/Kernels have surpassed stock on performance and/or battery life??

I'm guessing battery life since you just said that but performance too?

Yes to both. Whatever magic Franco did with his kernel the difference is very noticeable. I try to replicate the lags I used to get with the stock ROMs and I can't get them any more. Everything opens right when I tap it and the overall feel of the phone is smooth all around. People also run benchmarks on the XDA forums and the jump in performance with AnTuTu is very big. The crazy thing is he's not even done optimizing yet so there's more performance to be had.

Looks like he'll be back:

Nop, I'm not a big fan of leaving my users collecting dust, if I start to work on a device I don't stop its support. Hell I don't have a LG P500 anymore since some months ago and I updated the kernel last 19th of November

Off-topic aside, thanks for the kind words everyone, when the users are happy, I'm happy too!

Yea, I saw that post on XDA on Dec 9th. He hasn't put anything out for the NS since then though

Im dying for an ICS kernel from him. I even toyed with the idea of putting GB back on the phone so I could run his kernel, but ICS is just too pretty.

Upgraded from my Sammy Captivate to the Samsung Galaxy II 2 Skyrocket in white. Going from Froyo to Gingerbread and ICS is supposed to be pushed soon.

I'll keep my Captivate as a stand by, but I really wanted a better camera with a flash. Also with a true 4 LTE, ATT has a data plan for $5 more to go from 200MG to 2 GB.

Nice. What kind of speeds are you getting with it?

XDA is investigating whether or not the T-Mobile Galaxy S II variant supports AT&T's LTE.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1417095

Apparently, the Qualcomm variants of the S II use the same radio chip as the Skyrocket so it should be able to with the correct radio flashed onto it.

What kind of headphones are you guys using? Didn't even touch the stock Samsung earbuds that came with my GN, but decided to try them out and they sound very.... mediocre.

Anyone use wireless headphones? I'm worried about the battery life and the sound quality. Having a mic to make calls doesn't matter too much to me, but it could change my mind. I remember the mic on my old Klipsch earbuds echoed so I couldn't use them to make calls. Maybe they were just dirty....

I don't quite understand how the Android one-button remotes on headphones work either. One button controls everything? my iPhone had 3, two independent volume buttons and one multi-function.

I use Bose QC3 for everything. They don't look cool, but I don't care. Most of the time, I watch the football games on TV muted and stream via ESPN3 on the Bose. They are very comfortable (i.e., not a plug in your ear) and the battery life is great. So you have a wire... the latest phones still have a jack for them.

Eep. That's a little expensive for my taste. My fault for not stating a price range.... $80 and under would be fine. I'm currently using some $25 earbuds - well, $40 regular price anyway and they sound very nearly as good as my $80 Klipsch iPhone buds did. I'm poor.... not to mention cheap as well

I am open to having regular open headphones though. Earbuds are uncomfortable after a while.

Looks like Newegg has a deal going on the LG Behind the Neck Bluetooth Headsets for $40. I've been looking for a bluetooth headphone myself for a while now and I think this may be it. Reviews look good all around and I still have my $40 for $20 at Newegg from the Google Offers.

I liked the headphones that came with my Nexus S. But, they broke. So I picked up these:

http://www.vizio.com/home-theater-1/...-shipping.html

They had a 2-pack at BJs for $40, so my brother and I split it. They sound great, especially when using Voodoo sound enhancements and DSP Manager.

Did enough reading and felt comfortable enough to start with the unlock and root process.... in progress at the moment.

Shit is nerve wracking, to say the least. Gotta pop the cherry sometimes, I guess it's like warning labels on medicine, after a while you just make sure you follow instructions and the warnings don't phase you as much (e.g. nausea, stomach bleeding, VOIDING YOUR WARRANTY!!?!?!? )

Here's where I read up on it. I also read the thread in the link:

OK.... think I just went full retard.

I backed up my data through the phone's backup before doing anything. Then successfully unlocked then rooted my phone. Currently trying to flash the stock ROM to CM9 and install franco's kernel... downloaded both but dunno what to do with them, but that can wait....

I installed ROM Manager to flash clockworkmod recovery, let that do its thing then when I tried the "reboot into recovery" I get the exclamation point in the red triangle logo and my phone freezes. Gotta pull the battery to boot it up again. I feel I may have skipped a step somewhere... either way I'm very confused.

I think I'm just tired though, I'll try and get back to this tomorrow. This must be how my dad feels when he asks me how to do things like copy and paste.

It sounds like your Recovery didn't flash which is why you get the red triangle logo. You can try to reflash the Recovery with ROM Manager again. Or you can flash it yourself manually in bootloader mode (Volume Up + Down + Power) using fastboot commands:

CDMA Recovery: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1392336

Commands for fastboot:

Code:
fastboot flash recovery nameandlocationofrecovery.img
Also look a few pages back. I posted YouTube vids that go through the process of unlocking the bootloader, installing a recovery and then finally flashing a custom ROM. Don't forget to update your bootloader as well, the latest is PRIMEKL01 for both GSM and CDMA. It brings some battery saving features. Its also flashed in the bootloader mode.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1403133

Code:
fastboot flash bootloader bootloader.img

Got the new case from diztronic yesterday, love it. What are some of the pros to rooting the galaxy nexus, debating on whether or not to.

This must be how my dad feels when he asks me how to do things like copy and paste.
yea like it was mentioned it didnt flash correctly. Try flashing it again through ROM manager or do what he said two posts up

Yeah love the Diztronic case. The volume rocker is a lot easier to access. Rooting will allow you to run LightFlow so you can change the notification LED colors. Also allow you to flash some kernels to under volt the phone to save more battery and customize the soft key buttons and pretty much the whole phone.

So I have my ASUS Transformer with me today. Finally decided to try out a new ROM. I was using Gnufabio's Revolver ROM but it started to slow down with all the cumulative updates I put on it so I decided to start over and install JCarrz's KRAKD ROM. Honeycomb's come a long way since 3.0 and can't wait for ICS in the next few weeks. Also started playing with an app called HideBar which does exactly what it says. It hides the status bar in Honeycomb and you swipe up from the bottom to get it back. Some comparison shots below. With status bar on left, without status bar to get full 720p on the right.

Homescreen with ADWEx (just compliments tablet way better than the stock launcher IMO):

MX Player watching Clerks II:

Where to get get HideBar and more info on it:

There's another app called HoneyBar but its not free like HideBar is. Haven't tried it but they should be functionally the same thing. Revolver ROMs also have the function built in when you hold the power button.

The color banding in the background image is that supposed to be there or is that caused by the OS?

Its the wallpaper. Imageshack resizing also makes it look bad.
