I installed the new music app earlier today. I love it. Very polished.

For a build like this, 8-10 hours is great as the battery drain seems to be coming from the hacked modem drivers. Battery life will improve as they tweak it some more and more importantly once the Gingerbread source gets dropped by Samsung. On a regular Froyo ROM I can pull around 16 to 1 day of battery life so I expect it to get there eventually.
Ohh okk, that makes sense. I was scared for a second. Right now I'm almost at 10 hours with 45% left. Not to much heavy using but a decent amount. About 35 min of music, texting, facebook, browsing and today I was trying out that app messenger kik for a little. But its still not as good as it should be. Right now I have something thats keeping my phone awake when I'm turning my screen off and its bringing the battery down pretty quick while i'm not using it. I had this problem when I first got the phone and it was the maps. My maps again are at about 13% which is kinda high for not using it at all. I did have lattitude on last week trying it out, but itss off right now, dunno why my maps should be running this much.

The website that leaked the new Music app is down at the moment. Probably got hammered from all the people trying to download the app. You can get it from Android and Me's dropbox:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3192203/com....roid.music.apk

It looks like the Honeycomb music player for phones. Haven't tested it yet cause I'm still on MIUI and I'm enjoying the MIUI Music Player. May play around with it later.
Will this work on the NS with a CM build?

Here's my battery stat for today (taken with the built in screen capture):

With CPU Spy I can see how much time my phone spends at a specific speed. As you can see, it spent a lot of time at 1.2 GHz since my kernel is running OnDemand. Meaning anytime my screen is on, its on full throttle:

Same usage pattern as always except I found out my OC/UV wasn't applied until 2 hours in. I restarted maybe three times and cleared my Dalvik cache and regular cache so I actually should probably have about 5-10% more power than what's stated. I'll probably change my max to 800 MHz and switch it to 1.2 GHz when I'm next to a power source. That'll get me more battery life with MIUI at its current state for my phone.

Nice. My last charge lasted me 30hrs and 46 minutes of heavy use (running 400/1300 OC set to on demand). I brought it all the way down to 1% though.

Seidio is going to release a 3200mah battery for the Nexus S. So now there are two truly extended batteries for the NS. Mugen is selling their 3300mah. Im waiting for a member on XDA to review it though.

any ideas what akmd is? that uses most of my battery after the OS. running MIUI ROM.

my battery has been lasting ~18hrs or more since installing this rom. it's actually doing much better than the CM7 nightly I had last.

hey thats a cool feature of cpu spy, I think I'm gonna get that!

I'll post a pic of what I have so far. I really like 2.3.3's layout for battery stats as you will see soon.

this is at 42%

See as you can see my phone is awake a lot of the times when my screen is off, and my wifi is not turning off when I turn off the screen, there's some app I believe thats doing this. I'm trying to figure it out. Or maybe its just an issue with the latest CM build or Kernel? Also this has been like this since I used lattitude, but i turned it off the yesterday, before I started using lattitude a couple weeks ago, my phone would for the most part not be awake when the screen is off, and my wifi would turn off sometime after my screen is off. Right now, I'm not overclocking. I may go back to 1200 or 1300 once i figure out whats eating up my battery, I'm thinking its the maps, as you see its using up 13% of my battery and I didnt even turn it on today other than to make sure lattitude was off.

Looks like its something related to the auto-rotation? That's all I'm seeing from a quick Google search. Wonder why AKMD would use that much though unless its polling nonstop to know when to rotate. I would probably mention it in the CM7 thread to see if any one else is having the same thing. Its probably a kernel issue.

Yeah the Gingerbread battery stats is pretty cool. Wish I could zoom in on each part though. CPU Spy is helpful for UV so you know which Hz to focus on because that's where the phone will spend most of its time. Also helps troubleshoot if something is not letting the phone go to sleep.

There's no UV kernel for the NS (I think)

played with the music player a little, its worlds better!! The new UI is much better, smoother and cleaner. Widget doesnt work, but its the same thing from what I can tell. Probably gonna change it?

auto rotation it is. it is rather strange since my phone is asleep a lot.

I can't post in the xda dev section yet, but I'll look through the CM7 thread and see what I can find.

I have auto rotate turned off for now and I'll see if that changes the batt use tomorrow.

I may just go back to the 1.3.25 MIUI rom since I liked the way the screen shut off better. it was like an old tube tv instead of just dimming.

CM7 should have that feature as well because its part of AOSP Gingerbread. Its probably in the Cyanogenmod or Display settings like it is for MIUI. There's two separate animations one when it turns on and one for when the screen turns off. MIUI is based off CM7 so their features are pretty similar. I remember reading that if you run Spare Parts you will lose it though and will have to flash it all over again.

You can run spare parts, but you can't change the Windows animations setting. You can change the Transitions animation without affecting the screen off animation.

PSX4Droid is now open source and free:

http://twitter.com/zodttd/status/55813196900081664

I'm unable to put products on Android Market. psx4droid 3.0.0 is now an open source free product. Download the APK here http://t.co/0KaEnVe
Haven't used PSX4Droid in a while since FPSe has been awesome and gets updated almost daily. But for those who want to test it out, you can download it from that link above. Google pulled his app from the market probably cause the Sony Xperia Play is coming out and Sony asked them to take it down. Not sure of his plans in updating this now that he can't put it back on the market.

I had the same issue with maps on MIUI. Not sure if it's Gingerbread related but I never had a problem in Froyo. I was able to fix it by logging out of latitude. Now its not eating up my battery. I also turn off GPS manually when I'm not using it.

The GPS not working on the Evo RC4 is a known issue. Need to wait til they fix it.

The Blockbuster app is available on certain devices. Either way, the pricing for rental and purchasing is not worth it.

So I just flashed a Gingerbread build on my HTC Ion (HTC Magic). lol. Its working fairly well. Its based off CM7 but its not final yet. Its almost as fast as Froyo but I'm using a 64 MB swap partition and overclocking my phone to 576 MHz. I found a pretty awesome boot animation that looks like the CyanogenMod boot animation but in Gingerbread green. Sadly, the phone doesn't have the on/off TV like animation found in current Gingerbread builds. Only using this phone as a backup when I'm flashing things on my Galaxy S. Might try the Honeycomb build that they have for it as well just for fun...

Running Zeam Launcher with MIUI Weather widget.

you should be able to click the number automatically? It should be highlighted and underlined, at least it is for me when i get numbers I think. Or else what they said, long press the text message and copy text

Thanks for the update. Yeah that's the only thing I hate about Blockbusters plan, they are quite expensive compared to the competition. I currently have netflix but their android app was lacking, it was even worst in my gf's iphone but atleast you can stream. I downloaded Queue Manager and it was way better than the official one. Anyways, we just signed up to blockbuster since my gf's sister can get a discount and offered us 1 month free so lets see how this goes.

It is. But when I'm flashing ROMs and kernels its always good to have a phone just in case the gf calls during the flashing. Don't want her screaming at me for ignoring her calls. lol. Sometimes I like to change a few icons here and there so I end up testing to make sure they're stable and that takes some time.

It was working a couple of weeks ago before Netflix cut off the server for Android. The leaked Netflix app (Not the one in the market) has a good queue manager I hear. You can find it here:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1005503

Just download the file.apk and place it in your SD Card. Install it using any file Manager app like Astro File Manager by clicking on it on your phone. Or if you have an Android 2.2 phone, e-mail it to yourself and install it from GMail.

So when you're flashing different kernels, how do you test for stability. Smoothness is one thing, but what else can you look at? Cause a lot of kernels for my phone look really similar. OC to 1.4, voodoo suite, ext4 tweaks. I'm sure it would really hard to see which ones better in my eyes. Cause so far I've only stuck to one Kernel which in my eyes is good.

First off, for the Android noobs, flashing and changing kernels is very fast and easy to do. Its almost impossible to brick your phone flashing kernels so flash away. Just make sure you back up your data though just in case the kernel won't let your phone boot. I only flash different kernels if I haven't settled on one but once I do, I normally don't change unless I see one with the same exact features with some improvements.

As far as kernels go, I usually check for a few things. Stability is number one, then comes performance, battery life and finally, extra features.

Stability is checked usually by making sure the phone doesn't randomly reboot by itself. You can see this by checking the phone's uptime in the About Phone section. I don't really have a routine except to use the phone as I normally would and observe whether or not it crashes. Watching videos as well can stress the phone so I try to do that as well.

Usually, performance goes hand in hand with stability. If the kernel is not properly upping the voltage or cpu to keep the phone alive the phone will crash, etc. While quadrant and linpack give you a good benchmark for performance, they're not the best standard because they can be easily tricked with a data loop. Performance to me gets judged on how well my games play if there is lag or no lag.

Battery is kinda last on my list of things to check because its usually the hardest to gauge immediately when flashing kernels. Sometimes, the phone needs 2-3 discharge/recharge to get a good read on how long the battery really lasts. Also, I'm usually around a USB socket so its not the biggest of my concern. As long as I can log in 10-12 hours of medium to heavy use then its good enough for me. Some kernels will also add in tweaks to increase battery life by changing mount points at boot and decreasing the amount of time the OS reads and writes to the drive since most Android kernels were built for regular Hard Drives and not Flash Drives.

Finally, some kernels differentiate themselves with extra features like Voodoo Sound, CIFS, TUN, or Wifi ad-hoc. For most users, these are things they won't be using but for power users it can make a kernel really useful.

The GPS not working on the Evo RC4 is a known issue. Need to wait til they fix it.
LOL... went to XDA and everyone was talking about it... haven't checked the CM7 nightly in a few days for a fix....

Since you're rooted now, the easy way is to download an app like ShootMe:

Well the good news is that Cyanogen tweeted last night and said CM7 is about to go final. So that probably means in the next few days everything should be running top notch.

You could try this fix. Make sure to backup just in case:
