DuckBlue,
You don't check your PMs very much do you? I was just looking at the message tracking on some that I sent, and it says you haven't opened one from 6-22. Just lettin ya know.

mantis,
I just found **********.com and I was gonna post a Dallas thread there in the meetings forum, but since I just registered today, they won't let me. I noticed you're a member there so you could do it. It's polly too late for track night tonight, but maybe someone over there will be interested in the future.

Man, I go AWOL from the board and look what happens.
Anyway, sorry I missed the post to update the thread.
As far as racing goes, I'm SOL until I get some new rubber.
I'm really down to just grooves and am trying to make them
last until October or November. That's when the new Falken
ZE512 205-50ZR-17s are due out. They are
should be less than 20lbs (18-19 est) and provide a lower gearing which will help low end performance and won't hurt top end because of our really tall 5th gear.

RUF,
205s? those are even more narrow than stock tires. Why don't you go with 225s or something, or will they not fit on the 6.5" TL wheels?
And about racing, just come and watch. I don't think i'm even gonna run again until it cools down a whole lot, it's really depressing in the heat.

But Hanzie came in to save the day in the S2k!
I didn't mean for that to rhyme, honest.

So with the "smaller" diameter tire, I'll have slightly lower gearing, and with the weight reductions of the tires, I expect to gain a 10th or so on my 0-60 times, andas much a 3 10th on the 1/4.
The only real negative is that my speedometer will be off roughly 3MPH at 60MPH. Not a biggie in my book. It may even help me to reduce my risk of speeding tickets.
As far as racing goes, I hate being a bystander, but would go anyway.

After looking at his pics, and then those of the RES, they are not the same thing.
Anyway, I'm not holding my breath either way. But if something positive comes out later in the year I'm still ears.

The only man with the real plan is Allsock. If you're out there Allsock, give us an update on the Vortec deal.

The first number is the actual tire width, but not the actual tread width. That's where I got messed up in just glancing at my numbers, which I had in inches. So yes, the Falkens are skinnier, but only by the width of a pencil, but the tread width is not much smaller if at all.
Anyway, the stats from one 215-50-17 to another varies ever so slightly. For example:
The Dunlop Sport 5000 215/50/17s have a tire width of 8.9", a tread width of 8.0" and a diameter of 25.4"
The MXM-HX 215/50/17 OEMs have a tire width of 8.7", a tread width of 7.8" and a diameter of 25.5".
The ZE512 215/50/17s have a tire width of 8.6", a tread width of 8.1" and a dia of 25.4.
So not all tires are created equal, it's just a guideline. And notice that the tread width of the MXM-HXs is actually pretty skinny.
And from what I'm hearing, the 205/50/17 will have a tire width of 8.3" and a tread width of 7.8". About the same as the 215 MXMs. The biggest difference will be that the 205 will gave a dia of 25.1" vs 25.4".
Anyway, once all things are considered, I could go with a wider tire, but sacrifice weight and aerodynamics, and even grip due to a wider tire not fitting as well on the stock rims. So I wouldn't gain the max traction anyway.
Now that we are all confussed . . .
BTW - when they talk about tire width vs tread width they mean -
tire width is the the width of the tire measured at its widest point, and tread width is the measurement of the actual amount of tread that is in contact with the road. Then keep in mind that things like rim widths used and inflation pressures can effect the numbers.

Thanks RUF, that was enlightening. I figured all 215s were the same. Where did you find the actual tread width numbers for those tires? I see there's more to buying tires than just reading the size.

It's amazing what they have, even how many revolutions (RPM) a given size produces at a given speed. You can even see cut-aways for some models, and most show pic of a tire so you can see if it looks "cool" or not.
It really is a good thing to really check out multiple tires to find the one that meets your overall needs as all tires are not created equal.

BTW - I really liked the ZE502s, but they were a few pounds heavier. And if what they say is true, each pound per tire is 3x the effective weight. Plus since we are front wheel drive, it supposably has an effect on acceleration times.
Here's a link, and it's really cool too.

Hola amigos!!! como esta ustedes.
It has been a looooooooooooooooong a$$ time since i've even had the chance to THINK about visiting this forum. I see we've made quite a statement with 1k+ replies and almost 8k views. And as I left, Sacremento was only a tad bit ahead and now they're a good distance ahead. Oh well.
DuckBlue has mentioned a couple times that yall have met at the track and had some fun racing. Wish I could have been there...
Well hopefully there is a plan in the midst for another such "meet." Oh well, hope all is well with everyone and hopefully there are more regulars to this thread.

Anyway, things have been quite except Mantis and Danny.
BTW - I picked a fight with the West Coast thread because they had the nerve of giving themselves a 5-star rating.
However, in return they have reduced ours to a 3-Star rating. You need to get out there and bump us back up. We are all equal here.

Well you and mantis KNOW that I can be a REAL PW when needed.
oh well. I'm surprised that the Sacremento punks would give themselves a 5 star and knock us down too 3. What the hell makes them a 5. Does the main moderator live in Sac or what...?
