Microsoft: Windows 7 and Office 2010 Thread
I went out and bought a new Toshiba laptop the day after Windows 7 launched. I am NOT a techno wizard at all; just an ordinary home PC user.
So far, I like the different ways to arrange the task bar, zoom function, etc. But I don't see anything revolutionary compared to the past couple iterations of Windows.

Well the Vista way was you choose custom the first time then you choose upgrade the 2nd time. I'm gonna do it myself in a sec and I'll report back but from what I've heard you can just do custom install it will work. It should cause W7 install is different than Vista cause it asks for the product key AFTER install is complete and not before it starts.
Tell everyone to buy the upgrade even if they don't have an OS.
By the way, I spent the last couple of days setting up the Windows 7 Media Center along with the Media Browser plugin (http://www.mediabrowser.tv/). It's slick like you wouldn't believe, you get a varity of cover flow-like interfaces with high-res themes for every movie, transparency and smooth transitions. 90% of my ripped DVDs, MKVs, TV shows and everything automatically got covers and high-res background art downloaded, it's all so slick. And I have the exact same interface in the basement with my good old Linksys extender, using Transcode360 (works much better for MKV transcoding than the native Windows 7 transcoding).
My Logitech 890 Pro upstairs can wake the PC, launch a script to redirect the display to the TV in the living room (HDMI cable going through the wall) and launch Media Center at the touch of one button. Or at the touch of another button just turn on the stereo and launch iTunes on the PC for music-only entertainment. My 890 Pro downstairs can wake the PC upstairs, turn on the extender downstairs and let me stream movies to the basement.
And the same PC plays the latest and greatest games while people are watching transcoded films downstairs.
This is the reason I don't use a mac.

For a clear understanding about what happened with Vista in the beginning read the first page of the this Windows 7 review instead of getting your info from an Apple commercial.

I hear so many people bad-mouthing Vista based on Mac ads or a complete misunderstanding of how the Microsoft and Apple ecosystems work...
It's relatively easy to make stable drivers and stable software when you have a closed and proprietary environment with very tight control from the OS vendor. Not so with Windows, there's a huge amount of variety, vendors, and historical baggage. It's a trade-off, with Mac you get a very good and user-friendly cordoned-off experience, with Windows you have access to a much wider variety of hardware and software but your OS's popularity also means it's a much juicier target for attacks and the quality of software and drivers is more difficult to control. There are pros and cons to both.
My install went just fine last night. I did, however, run into a bit of strangeness with DirectX support. The first game I installed was a DirectX 9 game. When I installed the game, I instinctively canceled out of the install for DX9 that came bundled as part of the game’s own installation. After all, Windows 7 comes with DirectX 11, right? Well when I went to run the game for the first time, it wouldn’t launch and gave me a couple of errors about missing DX9 dll’s. I re-ran the game install and ran the bundled DX9 installer and everything worked fine.
So here’s my question, does Win 7 only include support for DX10 and DX11 out of the box? Could this be a 64-bit issue? I had always thought that DirectX (or at least Direct3D) was cumulative and always backwards compatible. In searching, however, I found some references on developer forums about guaranteed backwards compatibility for DirectX supposedly being dropped every two versions. If that’s the case, then it would make sense why you have to go and manually install DX 9. Still though, there’s a hell of a lot of DX 9 game time happening across the world. It would be surprising if Microsoft didn’t include support for it out of the box with Win 7.

I've had to install some DX 9 components on Vista in 7. Can't remember if I had to on XP as well. Why don't you try installing the game on Vista and see what happens.
You've inspired me and I'm about to install Medal of Honor Allied Assault, if requires DX 8.1!
Let's see how this turns out.

Yeah it's been hard to find one since they came out. Everywhere seems to be out of them. I got lucky and pcnation.com had them in stock for $242 ($2 over MSRP) which is deal seeing as everywhere else wants to sell them for $350. I checked there last night for you and they were out of stock. Also there's a real small site tankguys.com that was selling the x-25m for $220!! But by the time I found out they had already sold out and now they're selling them for $250 and are still out of stock. I bought my Core i7 860 from them for $255 even though retail is $285. Actually they asked me to pay more for it they said we're selling this for well below retail and aren't making any money on this would you like to pay more so that we can make some money on this? So I paid $5 more to make it $255. Still best deal out there.
I thought this was pretty neat

Thanks Stunna,
i can't find it anywhere. i may just do a backup of everything tonight and load win7 also tonight if i get the time. and then when i get around to getting one i'll load it on that also.
i need to get rid of xp, it's been 4 years and it's just starting to act weird on me so a fresh start would be very nice.

For those looking to upgrade an old PC be sure you run the upgrade advisor. It will tell you if there's drivers for it and if your software will work. Also a reminder you need DX9 graphics to run aero. In order to run aero on Intel integrated graphics you need the 945 chipset or higher, 915, 910 or lower is no good. If you have those two I'd look into adding a cheap video card for about $30 (you can find alot on newegg.com) or just upgrading all together.

I can't install a network printer at one of our offices. I keep getting the "not enough memory" message every time I try. Not sure whats going on (I have 4gb ram on my laptop). Its a new printer so I didn't think there would be compatibility issues, especially given the fact that I can print on the 2 year old network printer at my primary office just fine. Other than that I'm liking it so far, although I liked Vista as well.
Here's the backstory on this. The day before 7 launched Domino's decided to deliver a bunch of pizzas to MS in Redmond as a lame publicity stunt and sent this email to Gizmodo about it

So gizmodo did a photoshop contest of 50 Historic Events the Domino's delivery man graced with his presence. And they're fuckin hysterical!

Good shit!

To help the Windows team prepare for this legendary occasion, Domino's delivers stacks of its American Legends pizzas to Microsoft's headquarters in Redmond the day before the Windows 7 launch.

Good shit!
I can't stop laughing at these!
The one were jesus is on the cross is so funny. The guy has this "hey, where do you want these pizzas" look on his face while cuz is dying up there.

RDP 7.0 is out! It enables true multi-monitor support over RDP, bidirectioinal audio and HD video playback support and a bunch more. Download links for XP and Vista are the bottom of the page.

OSX has had all those features for years. Do something innovative, Microsoft.
yeah but Apple charged $200 for their remote desktop software. Even though it's been included in Windows since Win 95. It wasn't until Leopard that they included any sort of remote desktop capability. It also wasn't until leopard that they included any backup utility either. Way to look out for your users Apple!

I'm running it on a P4 and it's fine. I think the PC is from 2006 but if it runs good on a netbook which has an underpowered 1.6ghz single core atom processor than it'll run on any tolerable computer. The atom processor is pretty weak, it's the weakest one Intel makes.
P4 3.6 4gb ram installed
XP PRO SP 3
GeForce 7900 GS
I think I'm going to have to get a new system anyways, I need more power for Adobe CS4 and LR2. But keep debating between desktop or laptop, I want i7 CPU. Would like to sell my MBP to get a i7 laptop.

That thing would run Win 7 like a champ! Your card is a DX9 card so you're covered there. You can run 64-bit with that CPU.
If someone else can confirm that this will work, that'd be great! I believe it was Ken who figured out your app was 16bit and wouldn't run in 64 bit vista.
Ken? Anachostic? Billiam? Belzebutt?
yeah this was your thread. Theoretically this app should install and XP mode and then run in Windows 7!

Maybe someone here has an old 16-bit app they can throw in XP mode and see if it works. I don't, or if someone posts a link to a known 16bit app I'll try to install it in my XP mode myself.

Look out hitler!!
