Microsoft: Windows 7 and Office 2010 Thread
yeah multiple networks... ill check around... bugging me to all hell....
have you run the troubleshooter? right click on the icon and choose diagnose this problem. Troubleshooter has gotten pretty good in 7, it's better than vista and vista was much better than XP. Though I'm sure the troubleshooter will just cycle the NIC for you but probably not solve why you're being connected to "multiple networks" to begin with.
Random bitch: Why does Microsoft insist on having all of their applications save internet downloads to your temp directory and then copy the download from temp to the actual place you specified? I just discovered that even the command line ftp.exe does this. Annoying.

It has to do with you getting your gateway set to 0.0.0.0 along with your original. so you have to delete the bad gateway via cmd prompt. You may also have an imcompatibility from your router with Vista/7 so check to see that it has the latest firmware. Also you may have to disable IPv6 as well

you know what, I have a gateway with a static IP for Comcast business internet service.. which I've been meaning to switch back to residential since I don't need it anymore... maybe that's what's throwing it off....
run ipconfig /all from a cmd prompt and paste it here

does it do it even if you have it set to automatically save to a certain folder without prompting the user?
that way they can start the download right away instead of waiting for you to figure out where you want it. Then once they figure out where you want it they put it there. It usually takes just a fraction of a second, I guess unless it was a real big file and you wanted it on a different drive than the C drive. But that isn't very common.
like I said that's because FF doesn't ask you where you want to save a file it just automatically puts it in the downloads folder. Whereas IE by default prompts the user to choose where to save the file. IE should change this to be like the other browsers.
so I have a problem, whenever I start or reboot my computer, it gives me the yellow ! triangle over the networking icon and I have no internet connection. I have to go into the network window and there it shows my home network and one "Unknown" or unidentified network. To fix it, I have to disable the network adapter, and then re-enable it. Then it only sees my home network, and connects to the internet, and my day can begin. HELP!
Basically you're just renewing your IP address with your internet provider. It should read a weird number instead of 192.168.1.1, or something of that nature.
If you want you could check your internet modem connection by typing 192.168.100.1. It should tell you what your dbmv is for upstream and downstream levels. Your upstream should be between +30 - +51.9 and your downstream should be between +8 and -8. If the downstream is sitting a little higher than +8...like +9, it's OK.
Let me know...
So you don't get stuck with partially downloaded crap?
I'll have to try that next time I reboot, BigLizard... thanks.
in other news, I'm happy because I found a way to make a "Quick Launch bar". Enable Desktop Toolbar, position it like the QL bar, and right-click and uncheck "Show Text" and "Show Title". Now I can just leave the icons I need on my desktop, and those are duplicated in the pseudo-QL bar. It looks identical to how it did in XP. WOOT! So now I have that bar, along with the other pseudo-QL bar below it. It's like having your cake and eating it too!

I've got a couple gripes. Does the safely remove hardware popup context menu take forever to appear for everyone else or just me? It seems like it takes almost 10 seconds for the popup menu to appear before I can disconnect a device. Its worse if I have multiple devices I want to remove cause I can only do one at a time. Also they say Vista and W7 support S.M.A.R.T. monitoring for hard drives but there's now where to go to check a drives status. That should be included in disk management or the disks properties or resource monitor or something. I want to see a read out of how the drive's doing without downloading some crap program.
I found my first annoyance. If I had a CD/DVD in the drive and I wanted to grab the filename, I would just hit F2, then Ctrl-C to copy the filename. Now, Windows is smart enough to know you can't rename a read-only file, so there's sense in allowing the F2 action.
Anyone know a different or better way to accomplish this?

^^ i know what you mean, i do that sort of thing all the time but have not had a need to do such on a cd/dvd.
My gripe is opening the recycle bin and not being able to see the total size of all the files contained within at the bottom of the screen like i used to.

I was testing out a couple of things and I may just make a small little .NET app that takes the command line arguments and sticks it in the clipboard. Then I can put that app in my SendTo folder. Then I end up with Send To>Clipboard.
you could probably also do a batch file that you double-click and it outputs a directory list (using 'tree') of the CD drive as a text file, and probably get it to open the text file too. it's a workaround but hey that's what you gotta do sometimes. just depends on how bad you want it.
Don't feel like making a new thread, so......
My dad called. The other weekend, I uninstalled McAfee and put on AVG. He says now he can't get to any "password" websites, like Bank of America; he enters in his username and password and the following screen doesn't come up. He even called BoA tech support and they tried to help. He says other "password" websites are affected. Now mind you, he's not very technically astute but considering BoA tech support couldn't get him on and said it's something with the laptop, I guess there may be an issue.
He uses IE 7, I think??? Could it be something with the avg toolbar? He can log in just fine from his mac mini (no mac is better reference
), so it's definitely that laptop.
Clues on what to check for? I'll be heading over there tomorrow.

I feel bad for AVG, they're going to take a real beating form MS Security Essentials. I switched all my computers from AVG and haven't looked back.
AVG does have a URL scanner to look for phishing attempts. I've never installed it. It might be worth uninstalling it to make sure. I can't stand taht everyone has a "toolbar" for their program. Really? A Daemon Tools toolbar? A UTorrent toolbar? Lame.

Yeah it does and doesn't work. If everything you select are files then it will work but as soon as you add a folder to the list then the deals off. I can't remember if vista was like this or not. As long as you don't have folders selected it will work. It's dumb

Windows 7 sales exceed Vista sales by 234%
It has been quite amazing to watch the global excitement build around Windows 7, especially during a tough economic climate. It was just a few short weeks ago that we learned about Windows 7 outselling the UK's "own" Harry Potter. In Japan, anxious PC users waited in line to be one of the first to get their hands on Windows 7. And just today, according to the NPD groups' weekly tracking service, Windows 7 software unit sales in the U.S. increased 234% over Windows Vista's first few days of sales. "A combination of factors impacted Windows 7 PC sales at the outset, but the trajectory of overall PC sales is very strong leading into the holiday season," said Stephen Baker at NPD.

OMG! I got the Acer Timeline in today and this thing is awesome! What a great computer, it's better than I expected and I had high expectations. First off 802.11n is fuckin awesome!! I've had an N router forever but never an N laptop. My router is badly located in one corner of the house and with 802.11n I was able to stream high quality h.264 Kill Bill Vol 1 from my PC to the laptop in the bathroom on the other side of the house which on 802.11g has been a complete dead spot with zero bars. We've never had signal in that bathroom let alone signal in the room next to it and with N I got 4 bars!!!
Performance wise it's pretty darn good. It does play youtubeHD videos full screen which is something netbooks cannot do. It's dual core, I haven't noticed any stutters or slow downs in it. So far this thing has been great.
The first thing I did was run PC decrapifier, the laptop originally had 76 processes running but after decrapifying it and installing MSE it's at 52 processes which is pretty good for 7. The screen is pretty good, it's got your typical laptop crappy viewing angle but 11.6 1366x768 screen is crisp. Battery life is awesome at over 8hrs, keyboard is solid, the laptop itself has minimal flex.
As you can tell I'm very happy with this laptop, HIGHLY recommended. It's gonna be hard for me to part with it when I give it to my niece but I know she's gonna love it!
My only minor annoyances are the trackpad is kinda small and blends in with the rest of the laptop to easily but she has small hands so it's probably perfect for her. Also the sound isn't that great, it's not very loud and it's missing some treble.

yeah it's for my niece so I didn't want to get a big one (not that 13 is big). The screen very adequate I could probably use it to do a report if I needed. I don't find it too small like I did with the netbooks.
I bought it from J&R.com for $550 cause they were selling the black color for $50 less than Newegg plus they had free shipping which newegg didn't have and they had 5% bing cashback while newegg only had 2.5%.
