Could also just try "Windows 95" from the compatibility settings on the app's executable.

I scrounged through the software bin an found a bunch of old crap but IDK if it's old enough. Most of my old software is Mac only, I got that original iMovie if you want it! Adobe pagemill? I got you son, but it's for Mac only. I did however find a really old version of Transparent Language "learn latin now!" it says it's for Win 95, 98 or NT. I'll try it out but IDK if it's old enough. It seems like it's 32 bit.

64 bit won't run 16 bit. There's no way besides virtualization.

Why is the 'Run' not on by default in the start menu? Grrrr.
Although the same resolution, the font is absolutely tiny in windows 7. Not sure why.
I'm flirting towards turning on that magnifier option. Wish it only did text though.

There's a text font changer buried in personalization, but it does everything except window contents. (thanks)

run has been gone since Vista. There's many ways to deal with this. First is the search bar in the the start menu. you want to open msconfig, cmd prompt, regedit, dxdiag, winver, sigverif, services.msc, etc just type it in the search bar it'll pop up. This will hand most of your run needs. If you need a run window just hit win key + r and pops up the run command. If you really must have the run command in the start menu then right click on the task bar choose properties then go to the start menu tab and hit customize. From there you'll find "run command" in the start menu list which will add it to the start menu.

just try to use the search function it does pretty much everything.

Hmmm, the font might not be smaller, but I have a much harder time reading it. maybe I have to screw around with cleartype or something.

my Java is broke in Firefox. I can't upload pics to Facebook using the bulk Java interface (which I need) - when I try it says "Error. Click for details". Here are the details - help!

I tried uninstalling (remove all plugins), uninstall from Programs, reboot, reinstall everything. No cigar. It also doesn't work in IE8.

so I just searched the interwebs for a 16 bit program and found one. It's Total Commander which sounds like a game and was designed for Win 3.11 and yes it runs in XP mode on my 64 bit Windows 7 Professional!

Notice the wowexec.exe process. wow stands for Windows on Windows which is their emulation process to emulate older versions of windows on newer versions. Even today there's WoW64 which allows 32 bit apps to run on 64 bit windows just as this wowexec.exe process allows 16 bit apps to run on 32 bit windows.

I have that too! I didn't think it was a Win7 problem. I'll try it in XP mode! Xp mode to the rescue! I'm having fun with this tonight!

It does it in XP mode too! I just installed the latest version of Java. I don't think this is related to Windows 7 at all. And actually this wasn't the error I was getting at all before. I was getting something like upload failed or something when I tried to upload using the java way. This looks was more serious, you can't even choose photos to upload.

Here's the 16 bit Win 3.11 app running side by side with another app in Windows 7. Do that in OS X!

I'll be impressed if you can get PCTOOLS for DOS 5.0 running next to a DX11-specific game... haha

I think DOS apps stopped running in XP and Me would've probably been the last version to support that. XP of course was the first consumer OS based off the NT kernel and not off DOS as Win95/98/Me was

Are you kidding I use it for everything. Doing two things at the sametime. Like watching hulu and making this post. Or copying and pasting from a webpage to a document or an email. Comparing two documents. Copying files from one location to another, etc etc.

hmmm maybe I need to start using it.. I was copying some files earlier and kinda annoyed by how I had to select the window at the bottom... thought it used to be easier in XP and Vista.. you have dual monitors right? I don't - maybe that would help too.

no I don't. You can use the win key + left or right arrow to snap a window to either side and then just alt + tab to the next one and do the same.

i got my preorder copies of windows 7. does this need the ahci drivers or do i just pop the disc in and install it without anything extra? what's the deal with drivers, i keep seeing around the web that windows 7 has most of the generic drivers. i still need to install motherboard drivers and all of that extra stuff right?

my laptop install is going to be easy. i'm putting off my desktop xp to w7 install cus it's going to be a huge pita and i'm not looking forward to it.

I've got a lot of old school 16 bit games that work just fine, no DosBox or anything needed

Win7 64 bit here

Those XP days of having to load drivers are gone! Just stick it in and it'll probably find everything. It works with AHCI, RAID etc, no more pressing F6 to load drivers. I just rebuilt my system with a new P55 board, core i7 processor and Intel SSD and it installed all the drivers for it. Then once it booted up for the first time it went on Windows Update and found updated drivers for my graphics card and NIC and found drivers for my webcam.

Perhaps a separate thread for this, since my firefox on XP also can't upload pictures. I have to use IE. I'd be interested in a debugging thread on this (although I can tolerate using IE just for that).

There is a new firefox beta out today (with better win7 support).
i'll try that when I get home.
