I have a question... When I was running Vista I would use the Fix tab in Windows Picture Viewer to make quick adjustments/crops etc to pictures. Now that I'm running 7 the "Fix" tab isn't there anymore. Did they get rid of that feature or is there something I'm missing?

aw you've run into the ol' Windows 7 doesn't have an email or photo organizer/editor installed by default due to potential anti-trust problems. Vista came with Photo gallery while windows 7 comes with photo viewer. MS still offers these programs but doesn't include them by default in order to avoid anti-trust claims. If you open windows update and hit check for update, you should see a few optional updates. click on that and you'll probably see some updated drivers and something called windows live essentials. install the new drivers and windows live essentials. Then the live essentials installer will open and you can choose to install a variety of programs, I usually install mail, photo gallery and maybe movie maker it depends on how I'm feeling that day. Once you do that you'll get the latest version of photo gallery which is better than the version that came with Vista. And yes Live essentials is free.

Good bit of info there. I've honestly never installed the Live Essentials optional update because I figured it was going to give me the kitchen sink of all the Live apps. I never knew that it just installed a framework for the Live stuff and let you pick and choose which individual apps you want.

as mentioned in previous threads Windows Live mail is my email program of choice when I can't use Outlook 2010, I also like the red eye removal and panoramic stitching in Live Photo gallery, it's better than Google's Picasa actually Picasa doesn't have panoramic stitching. Also Windows Live Writer is supposed to be REALLY good. I don't do a blog but from everyone I've heard that uses it they've loved it. my friend has been doing an almost daily blog for a years and a few months ago I told her to try Live Writer and she switched immediately to it and wrote a blog post about it.

Thanks man! The new Live Photo Gallery kicks ass. Way more features than the old one. I only installed that part of live essentials.

Is there any point of installing the email portion if I only use outlook? I already have a web based mail client that I can use when I'm not using my machine.

Live Writer is great. I use it on SharePoint, Windows Live, and two different Community Server sites.

Good, I'm glad you like it. There's no reason to get live mail if you use outlook, you can setup outlook to handle your web mail unless it's a yahoo! account they charge $20 for their plus account in order to get email client support.

Steve Ballmer is supposed to be unveiling the Ceton CableCARD Quad-Tuner at his keynote tomorrow and the price is going to be $400. That more than I was hoping it would be, I was expecting $200-300. But it currently the only solutions out there so they've got no competition.

Brother in-law bought a new PC. Came with a bunch o' crap on it. Any recommendations for an app that helps you properly uninstall all the garbage that comes on it? Or is the traditional Windows Remove the best?

Windows 7 Home, I think.

Stunna, is there a way in XP to limit who on a network can see shared folders?

I have the permissions set up so the other users can't access any of the shared folders I don't want them too which is good, but to make it great, I would like to make those folders they don't have access too not even appear to them. Any way to do this natively?

You can hide a share by suffixing it with $. AFAIK, that aspect of Windows networking has not evolved since NT 3.5.1 and maybe before. I remember this being one of the arguments Netware fans would bring up.

Yeah the $ will hide the folder. So if you had a for labeled porn and you wanted to hide it just call the share $porn. Do you want the users who can't access your porn share to be able to access other shares on the same PC? If not then just them have to enter a password to access the shares on your PC would be enough to not make the share visible.

Yes. The shares require a password to access, so it's not like they can see any files within the folder, however if it wasn't visible to those that don't need to see it that would be cool.

So broke down today and bought a new computer, picking it up at bestbuy tomorrow since the one I was at was out of stock. Going from WinXP to Win7home premium. Also going from Athlon3200XP, 160gb hd, 1gb ram to Intel Quad core q8300, 1TB hd, and 8gb of ram. My shit is going to cook finally

what are the specs of your PC? type in msconfig in the search bar and disable any unnecessary startup items.

I've always suffixed share names with the $ for hiding them. Apparently both work.

FYI, the Bootcamp 3.1 update was released today and includes "official" Windows 7 support. There was also a separate driver update released for running Windows 7 on the most recent generation of iMacs.

ZOMG Anachostic, Opera 10.5 beta adds full Windows 7 integration! Including tab preview, jump lists and a new interface that turns the menu bar into an Office 2010-like drop down menu.

Excellent. I have been switching from my wireless keyboard and mouse to the wired when I use Win 7.

On a similar note, has anybody had any issues getting the audio to work on bootcamp Win 7 Ultimate? Maybe this update will fix it.

I just picked out and ordered a laptop for my old boss. It's got a Core i5 2.26GHz processor w/turbo boost up to 2.53GHz, 802.11n/bluetooth, 3gb ram, 250gb HDD w/ free fall sensor and 14in screen for $750. It should be here in a couple weeks.

Uhh, actually I think that's a good deal. It's the Core i5 processor not the lower i3, plus I got $160 off, retail price is about $920. It's an HP dv4i.

well, I shouldn't have said that without the complete specs. There's a ton of things you didn't list that are making it alot better I'm sure than just the few you gave. I just saw 3gb ram + 250GB hd for 750 was like, WAT.

Not a fan of HPs. I had a HP laptop that died less than 3 years because of overheating.

^the specs are the same as the Acer Timeline I got for my niece. 250gb hdd, 3gb ram, wifi-n/bluetooth; except the HP has a bigger screen, much better integrated graphics, a much more powerful core i5 processor with hyper-threading and 1066 DDR3 RAM. I'll do some benchmarks on these things when I get the HP in. I'll even benchmark my main desktop so you can compare! This will be fun! BRB...

Here's the benchmark comparison between my desktop and the little Acer thin n light I've got.

Specs on the desktop are Core i7 2.8GHz, 4GB DDR3 1066, Intel 80GB SSD, nVidia 8800GT
Specs on the laptop are 1.3GHz Pentium Dual Core, 3GB DDR2, 250GB HD, Intel 4500HD

I'm very interested to see where the Core i5 lappy will land between the two, especially in regards to graphics since this is the first Intel part to have graphics built into the same chip as the CPU.

For much more detailed graph click below
