Microsoft: Windows 7 and Office 2010 Thread
F$&*#*# Windows Update.
I was updating the software on my bosses sons' ipod and i was typing an instant message. Windows update popped up and wanted to restart so of course while i was typing it came up. When i hit the space bar it tried to reboot my computer. I managed to avoid the reboot but it wiped the ipod. Lost everything, FML

Windows 7 Activation Technologies Update coming down the pike, will tell you things you (should) already know
By Darren Murph posted Feb 11th 2010 8:59PM
Wondering why your PC has been infested with malware, random popups, intermittent shut downs and all sorts of other atypical garbage since the day you installed that downloaded copy of Windows 7? In case you aren't capable of determining that your copy of Windows isn't genuine (as in, you didn't buy it from a legitimate source), Microsoft is about to lend you a serious hand. In the "coming days," the software behemoth will be pushing out a new update for Windows Activation Technologies, which will look for over "70 known and potentially dangerous activation exploits." It sounds as if the update is intended to alert folks who purchased complete PCs from the back of their local White Van that they may have gotten ripped off, but either way, we're not particularly stoked about having yet another item running in the background, consuming system resources and telling us that we've been naughty. Thankfully it's a voluntary update, but keep your eyes peeled if you don't want to okay the installation accidentally.
[Thanks, Troy]

Also look into running pc decrapifier to uninstall the programs she doesn't need. Alot of PCs come with crap free programs that slow down your system.
run this

Everyone I've heard has been thrilled with the performance of Windows 7. If you do a little research you'll find that everyone that uses it loves it, so your GF problems are not because of 7 but cause of the crap software that the PC maker puts on there.
and for what? All the features that are in Ultimate and not in professional are designed for enterprise environments and require server 2008 R2 to enable them. Not worth the $50
It is funny, what people are saying about the performance
I am having problems with our Juniper VPN client from home. And while I was on the phone with my companies support he wanted me to reboot my machine.
So I did, and it was back up and running in around 30 seconds.
He couldn't believe it, so he asked me what I was running
Windows 7 on a SSD drive.

Speaking of SSD's, read something this morning
"Coming soon: Postage stamp-sized 1TB SSDs"

Probably a single core processor, too....
7 hours left of build 7100 on all 3 of my machines before it starts rebooting every 2 hours.
I've already got a copy of Home Premium from the student offer; but, what's the best way to bundle Pro my other 2 (64 and 32)?

Unless you know someone who's in college and can get you a copy through their school.

Thanks Stunna. I actually found a guy who was selling (probably a student) Pro Upgrade on Amazon (download) for $105. I was hesitant; but, it worked. Next, The Ultimate Steal website has the Pro Upgrade for $65, got that for my other laptop.
Using this guy's instructions:
http://tech.icrontic.com/articles/up...-rc-to-retail/
I was able to "Upgrade" my Ultimate 7100 RC installations to 2 Pro and 1 Home Premium. Worked perfectly. One tip though, use Winrar to extract the ISO's to your hard drive--saves the time of burning to DVD then copying the files back over.
So, that brings the total to:
Pro Upgrade: $105
Pro Upgrade (Student): $65
Home Premium (Student): $29
Total: $199
Not bad for 3 legit copies.

Installed Microsoft Security Essentials on my main laptop and now I can't get Windows to boot
Safe mode is fine; but, I can't uninstall this shit. Tried Revo, it removed a bunch of stuff, still a no-go. Restore, no-go. arg.

WHA? Are you getting a blue screen error? Do a system restore via automated system recovery either from the Win7 disc or it should be on your hard drive if you hit f8 during boot process.
Slightly OT, but is there a way to get the current version of Live Movie Maker to save anything other than Windows Media format? I'm looking to save as mp4 or h.264 since these formats apparently result in much cleaner YouTube postings.
Going to perform a clean install I guess. Problem is, the ISO I downloaded isn't bootable and you can't upgrade/clean install from safe mode.
Might be a fault of doing an upgrade from the RC build. It's not recommended or supported.
got a spare USB 4gb drive around? use wintoflash to install from flash drive. actually wait use this it creates a bootable dvd for you

I jinxed myself in my earlier post about everything being perfect

Thanks for your help, I found that you can perform a clean install from the ISO in safe mode thankfully.
I down graded from win 7 RC to Xp today because mine ran out. I need to go out and pick up a copy of 7 tonight or something. I loved how fast it was, its much faster on my laptop than XP is.
Yeah, it's my 3-year-old Alienware laptop that does the majority of my web development work. It's been upgraded from XP>Vista>7100>7600--never once with a fresh install.

you shouldve seen my reaction when I read your post that you haven't done a clean install since xp! That's just insane. I had to do an XP to Vista install once and thing were never right. The thought of upgrading that to RC and then to RTM

my reaction was something like this

It's ran like a champ, and believe me, I'm usually the first to say, "clean install;" but, it's really been fine for 3 years.
Posting from it now while on hold with Microsoft to get my activation code for Office---------ffffffuuuuuuuu- Some guy just told me their servers are down and to call back.
Dumb question- Is there a way to tell if the copy of Win 7 is the N version or not without installing it? Would it be listed somewhere if I explore the disc?
I have a couple discs of Ultimate & Pro, and in my infinite wisdom, I didn't label them when I made them. I don't want to go through the whole install process to find out it is an N version.
