Microsoft: Windows 7 and Office 2010 Thread
Does anyone have any experience with Pro Tools and Windows 7? I've been asked to help get the two working. I was on the Avid site reading up on it and there's beta drivers out for 7 but the person is having trouble getting them working. She says she's getting an audio buffer error. I want to just chalk it up to the fact that Pro Tools doesn't officially support Windows 7 yet. I guess I'll try uninstalling pro tools and then reinstalling it per the instructions. Cause I bet it wasn't installed right. Or could her firewire card not be compatible with pro tools?
A friend of mine, whom I consider substantially more computer literate than me, is going to school for game design. He told me that he flat out gave up on trying to get Pro Tools to work with Win 7 after a week of trying various things. He ended up throwing together an XP box out of spare parts just to run Pro Tools for his audio work.
Apparently Pro Tools is VERY picky. It doesn't like nvidia graphics cards, IE 8, only works with certain hardware, it's best if the pro tool workstation is not connected to the internet, etc etc.
From what I can tell so far it doesn't seem her problem is caused by 7, it's likely a hardware issue. She's getting a 6088 error which is an audio buffer underflow error. Seems like it has many hardware related causes.

But I agree with stunna, after about a week of use, you won't want the old look. The ribbon is so much more practical.
UBitMenu does not hide the ribbon interface, but adds the classic menu as a new ribbon. Gradually you will realize that many functions are easier to handle using Office ribbons. Microsoft® has done a good job there.
Outlook only had ribbon in the compose mail window. The main window still had the toolbar. Outlook 2010 has ribbon in all the windows including the main windows and I like it.

I'll always have 2003 on my work laptop.

Here's a video discussing the free version of Office 2010

Quick question. Is there some resource I can go to in order to see what level of DirectX a particular model of video card supports? I just received a shipment of 30 computers with 256 MB Quadro NVS 290 cards (NOT what I asked for) and I'm trying to determine how big a stink I need to make. I have this feeling in my gut that the Quadro line is targeted at OpenGL and doesn't have any DX acceleration.
Nvidia's product page has no mention of DirectX and the only thing I've found at Microsoft is the compatibility lists which aren't terribly encompassing for things like video cards and only list "compatible/not compatible" with no further detail.

have tried "dxdiag" from a run prompt or the search bar in Vista/7 if not try gpu-z, like cpu-z but for gpus.
gpu-z

edit: actually don't run dxdiag that will confuse you cause it will say it's DirectX11 but that's not the card that's the OS.
use gpu-z

Thanks for the help. I actually didn't even want to power any of these machines up in case they have to go back. Regardless, I started searching retail sites instead of MS and Nvidia. It looks like the card is a bottom of the barrel DX10 card from early 2008.

good lord, i do not like how windows 7 and wmp12 handles sharing media with my xbox and ps3
for one thing, xvid doesnt work anymore on my 360 so that cuts out alot of movies i can watch.
and for some reason it acts stupid with the ps3, it doesnt show all the movies that are supposed to be in the folder. although most if not all the videos work.
and the way it handles the library is freaking slow to make changes, especially if you have quite a lot of movies/videos/porn
it was actually much much simpler back on vista

Streaming to the PS3 works great for me
I've had that problem where files don't show up but that goes away after a while and I think that problem is the fault of the PS3 and not 7 cause I had that issue with Vista as well

Just upgraded my laptop. Huge difference.
Upgrades:
2 to 4 gigs of RAM
Hitachi 5200 RPM 160 gig drive to a Western Digital 7200 RPM 320 gig 16 MB cache drive
Vista 32 bit Windows 7 64 bit
The Win 7 install was flawless. It recognized almost all of the driver sets- the only one I had to manually install was the touch pad driver. Configuring the internet connection and mapping a network drive was a breeze.
New Egg also had a bundle offering for buying the drive. It came with a program called "Tuneup Utilities", which came free. Very handy little tool for optimizing and tweaking.
I'm getting much faster load and execute times and everything works just fine with no real headaches.

With that, has anyone been able to get rid of this pesky tirerack ad?

I have adblock installed in FF and IE and this is the only ad that still shows up.
EDIT: it seems that ad is an acurazine sponsored link much like the RJ ad at the top.

A new laptop is in my foreseeable future. I'm figuring it will probably be far faster to do a clean install than to manually de-crapify the new computer. The thing is, plain vanilla OS discs seem to be essentially extinct with retail computers now days. Sure you have restore discs or a restore partition, but those seem likely to put the crapware back on the machine.
I own a "boxed" Ultimate Edition disc which I purchased from NewEgg when I built my desktop back in November. Is there any way I could use this disc to do a "down level" install of Pro or Home Premium on the new laptop? Two factors seem to be at play here:
a) Can you use an ultimate disc to install a "lower" edition of the OS?
b) Would the OEM product key provided with my new laptop work for an install done with an individually purchased "boxed" OEM disc?

you can make a disc that will install any version of 7 out of the OEM disc you have. just delete the ei.cfg file in the sources folder.

I have a
question about access based enumeration. I have a share called movies on my server 2008 r2 VM in which I'm importing all my movies. I'd like to block R-rated movies on the share from being watched by my niece on her PC. She has her own user name so I'd like to block her from seeing those movies. each movie is in it's own folder and those movie folders are in the movie share. So I just want to prevent access to certain folders within the movie share for her user account. The folders don't have to be hidden from her but that would be nice too. This seems simple to do, right? I just don't want to have to make a separate share for R-rated movies

yeah that's no problem, if you assign rights at the movie share folder level, you need would need to go to each R film folder and turn off inheritable rights and set the rights accordingly. However, if you have alot of R films then doing it on each one can be a pain. So having an R folder would make things easier/quicker if there's alot of them.
they couldn't just browse the movies folder and find it.

Put 7 on yesterday after installing some new hardware. So far,...I like it. Still getting used to the differences vs XP, but seems good.
