Microsoft: Windows 7 and Office 2010 Thread
I wouldn't expect the likes of McAfee to support something like a new version of Office the instant the RTM drops. The fact that they're saying it's going to take another six months after the RTM release when they've already had the product in their hands for at least nine months prior to that is what pisses me off. What have they been doing for the past nine months? Developing their plans to rid the world of that plague known as svchost.exe apparently.

hmm, I didn't know that. I knew you needed ipv6 for direct connect. But then why does it matter, homegroup only works on W7 machines and homegroup doesn't work on a domain though it does work on computers that are joined to a domain. Since IPv6 is on by default why does it matter? I guess if you were using an old router that didn't wupport IPv6 that might be a problem....
I don't understand why you need McAfee to support Office 2010. Are you talking about an Outlook plugin? I've been running McAfee with Office 2010 on my work PC since it was released on TechNet with no problems.
Yeah, the Outlook virus scanner is my main concern. If you haven't had any problems with Virus Scan Enterprise and Office 2010 then I'm happy for you. I just can't go deploying that combination to my users without having somewhere to officially point my finger at should some oddball bug rear its ugly head.
FWIW, our McAfee account manager actually got a hold of their product manager for Virus Scan Enterprise on my behalf. That individual responded stating "Adding support for Office 2010 with existing versions of the product is not possible since there are significant changes to be made." and "...the extent of changes required to support Office 2010 (specifically the outlook scanner) mandate that it needs to be done in a major product release...".

I am frustrated by the new taskbar/dock.
I used to be very efficient with minimizing and restoring windows with a single click, and I find now that I am very inefficient. I have to hover or click on the main icon, then select the sub-icon. Also, I repeatedly go to Outlook to look for the message I a composing, only to find it in the Word popout menu as Word is my default composer for Outlook.
I am not amuse.

Is there a tool out there to determine hard drive speed? Here's the situation. I've got a 1TB WD Black that I'm using as my OS drive. I know larger drives are typically slower than smaller ones, and this is no exception. My secondary drive is an older WD 500 drive. I've got to do something about the 500, its almost full. If its also faster than the 1TB, I'd like to swap them out. If not, well I'll have to figure something else out.

Your WD black is going to be 7200RPM
even a cheap one will run circles around the fastest HDD. Random reads and writes are WAY faster (40x to 50x faster) than even the fastest HDD, I/O's per second will be much higher (10x-20x) as will sustained reads and writes (5x or 6x) and access time is less than a tenth of a ms with in SSD while even the best HDD is around 4ms but usually 8ms.
If I were you'd I'd use the 1TB WD black as your data drive and then use a 60GB-128GB SSD for your OS/programs drive. Oh wait, that IS EXACTLY how I'm doing it!

I've got a 120GB SSD as my OS/Programs drive too. It kicks ass and was worth every penny for the performance.
I've also got a pair of Velociraptors running mirrored for my immediate access data (mostly my Lightroom catalog).
I mentioned this in the WHS but MS recently released Windows 7 Embedded Standard which brings certain technologies from 7 to Embedded devices including Media Center! So embedded devices like TVs, Set-top boxes, thin clients and bunch of other devices can be using Media Center now. Imagine if your cable boxed used the Media Center UI instead of it's shitty UI, yeah that's what we're talking about! I really hope this catches on!

Also Engadget HD did a review of the Ceton multi-stream digital it! I may just have to pick one of these up!

Anyone happen to try Visio 2010 yet? Anything to love? Anything to hate? Just an average upgrade from 2007? I'm thinking about buying it for myself with the edu fac/staff discount I qualify for.
I have it but I barely use it. I know there's 3 versions with 2010, instead of 2 with 2007.
All we deal with is small business stuff so we don't deal with huge networks with multiple subnets and domains, etc. Most of our clients have ten employees or less with one server, that's if we haven't virtualized their server yet and put it in our server rack in downtown tampa.

So let me fill you guys in on a little project I've been working on ever since I got my iPad. Well I've had the idea for quite a while but it was my motivation to get it rolling. I've taken all the DVDs in the house (that were worth the effort) and ripped them using either DVD decrypter or DVDFab to ISO and then used Handbrake to convert the movies from the ISOs to H.264 MP4 files stored on my Server 2008 R2 VM (will be replaced with the next version of WHS Vail when that goes final). I then can stream them throughout all the devices in the house including my iPad, Macbook Pro and the couple other Macs in the house.
I did something simple and special for my Windows 7 machines though. Media Center in 7 has the new "Movies" tab and I pointed my machine at the Movie share on the server and used a little program called YAMMM (yet another movie metadata manager) which downloads all sorts of metadata for your movies including artwork, backdrops, reviews, cast & crew, related movies, etc. from imdb or themoviedb.org it then puts it in an XML file that Media Center can read and then when you view your h.264 files in the Movies tab it looks just like this with artwork, reviews, cast and crew, related movies and that info is added automatically by YAMMM!

purty sweet! YAMMM also supports MyMovies and the popular XBMC as well.
check it out, it's pretty easy to use and once it's setup it's automatic from there.

I currently have 260 movies on a 500GB drive and I have about 80GB of storage left.
So yeah I've been busy ripping movies these past few weeks. The movies look great in H.264 and they're about 25% the size as the original mpeg2 video that's on the DVD. I've gotten all the movies I want from my family and my local library has about 2000 movies there that I can rent for free and if I use two library cards I can get 12 movies at a time! So I've been like a kid in a candy shop when I go in there. Also I've been getting even more movies from my Netflix queue I can get about nine movies a week from Netflix. I guess I'll have to go to a 1tb drive here shortly.

when i used to rip movies and burn them onto a single layer DVD, the compression was slightly noticeable.
and do you ever come across a DVD that you cant rip?
The videos maintain about 95-100% of the quality of the dvd so if the dvd is crappy then the mp4 will be as well. I watch them on my 27in dell u2711 and the video is acceptable, I don't have a way to get them to my HDTV yet but my Dell is higher resolution than my HDTC. I've done side be side comparisons between ripped and dvd and the differences are little to none. I'll update my handbrake thread with the settings I chose.
Most DVDs work fine with DVD decrypter but newer ones have different encryption but DVDfabpro is updated regularly to work with newer discs. However I have come across one dvd so far that I can't rip. Schindler's List. I can rip the 2nd side of that disc (it's dual sided dual layer) and I can rip the first layer on the first side but I cannot get the 2nd layer on the first side. It freezes in dvd decrypter, dvdfabpro and using handbrake directly in Mac to copy. Neither of those programs can make it past the layer break, they all freeze at the same spot. And yes I've tried two copies of schindler's list and I get the same result for both. Other than that I've had a couple that wouldn't copy due to scratches but even badly scratched ones can work with Handbrake on Mac. handbrake on Mac can copy the movie directly from the DVD if you have VLC player installed, it's much slower than my method on PC but it usually does the job if I can't get make an ISO with dvd decrypter or dvdfab pro on PC.

yeah it's the bomb. Oh wait first you need the file2folder.bat file! It's a little bat file that takes every file in a directory (in this case only movies) and puts each file in it's own subdirectory folder and names that folder after the file that's inside it.
So for example my hard drive is names movies and I rip all my movies that drive. However for YAMMM to work the movies need to each be in their own folder with the name of the folder being the name of the movie. So after I rip say 20 movies I run the file2folder.bat file in the root directory and it puts all the movies in their own folder. So when I rip say Napoleon Dynamite I'd rip it in Handbrake to z:\Napoleon Dynamite.m4v but then I'd run file2folder and it'd make it z:\Napoleon Dynamite\Napoleon Dynamite.m4v.
Then at that point YAMMM is monitoring my Z:\ drive and sees the new folder and then searches imdb.com and themoviedb.org for that folder name and then downloads all the metadata and images and puts the metadata in an XML file and the images are hidden by default all within that movies folder.
you can get file2folder here

So for this to work your movies need to be the name of the movie and nothing else not napoleondynamite.dvdrip.xvid.avi. Also if the movie has been remade it's best to put the year in the title in parenthesis napoleon dynamite (2004).m4v would be the best thing to name it so that you get the right info.

Ah, well that isn't exactly what I was looking for, but still better than a bunch of blank colored tiles.
I really don't understand why art and extensive metadata isn't part of the movie formats yet. The other thing that has been bothering me is the way windows media reads id3 tags. I can't seem to find a automated tagging program that writes the tag that media center and wmp need, and windows media player only seems to make the changes to that particular computers database not the mp3 itself. It is amazingly frustrating.

oh hells naw, I solved that problem in about the 2nd day I got the iPad. A little app called File Browser, it allows my to access files from SMB (Windows) shares. So I connect to my server and then choose the movie I want to watch and stream it to my iPad.
Stapler I bet this app is more what your'e looking for!

that would be annoying imo, especially considering how large your library is becoming.
