Microsoft: Windows 7 and Office 2010 Thread
So my dads been complaining about his desktop pc having a very slow startup time. Once it starts up though, the pc is fast
It takes about 3-4 minutes to start up. It will sit on the windows startup screen for a couple minutes that says windows or whatever it says, and then after about a minute or two the windows symbol pops up and it will soon start up.
I'm running a scan right now, but I dont think its a virus.
I looked at the event log, and I noticed that there is warnings and errors that pop up each time the computer is turned on.
Look at today's date, is when i turned the computer on for the first time today
Here's a pic. Any clue what this may be related too?

Ok so under control panel, performance infor and tools, advanced tools, there was the warning saying something about devices are causing problems with the computer to sleep.
I clicked it, and it went away so i dont have the exact wording
edit: it didnt go away just hid behind my scan window, i'll take a screen shot and put it up here

I'd look in the device manager and find out whose the manufacturer of the hard drive then go get their diagnostic program. I'd run that first to rule out an imminent drive failure.
Edit: I'd also pop open the case and check to see if there's excess dust on the fan/heatsink.

here is the image, but it looks like this is causing it to hibernate or go to standby slowly
I dunno what this has to do with turning it on

I gotta check with my dad if he is actually turning of the computer, maybe its taking a long time to start up from hibernate??

we already cleaned out the computer so thers no dust,
I still think its something else that is causing it, I dont think the hard drive is failing, its been like this for a while now
here's an image of my device manager, maybe its the portable devices thats a problem?

And it is still taking a while to start up, currently working on the diagnostic tool
sigverif just confirms that your driver files are digitally signed. The driver in question should be, it it shows up in the list then it's not and means you should look into that.
sfc = System File Checker looks for corrupted system files and then automatically replaces them with good copies.
It's fixed some weird problems I've seen before

so i'm trying to type in bootrec in the command prompt and it says its not recogized as an internal or external comman, operable program or batch files, i'm thinking some files might be corrupted?
another thing to add
dir/s bootrec.exe
File not found
So this computer is missing boot files apparently?

speedemon90, is that an internal card reader you have there? You mentioned the only external USB devices were the WD and mouse... I'd try unplugging the card reader from the USB header... just a hunch.

I forgot to mention I uninstalled those drivers that had those symbols next to it. No difference. Unless there is something else I can do, I'll get to it tomorrow now, to tired to do the other stuff now.

Yeaa so I don't want to read through 62 pages of this, but my question is: if I currently have Windows Vista on my laptop, can I upgrade to Windows 7 for free?
Vista is such a POS and has like 3 automatic updates every day

I just found out team viewer has a self executing admin/client package. One exe file for each, no install files. You just run the client file and it gives a code and password. You enter those numbers on the admin side, bam, remote access.
well i talked to my dad today, and i told him over the weekend that i think it may be a usb problem or something with the boot files i dunno, but he did looked into the usb problem and found that a feature that offers like a quick photo transfer light was always blinking, its next to the usb drives also, dunno what connector it is, but anyway, he ran that back to the motherboard and disconnected it, and now the computer is perfectly fine. So that thing was causing issues.
Ok, who knows something about Live Movie Maker. A co-worker asked if I'd transfer about 50 clips from SD Card to DVD. However, I'd like to have an index or something rather than just string all of them together. Is it possible to have a thumbnail of each clip on an index page so they can navigate through the clips? Then maybe an option to play all?
FYI Office 365 went live today and Office 2010 SP1 was released yesterday....
you can download SP1 here

$6/mo is pretty good deal. It's $1 more than google apps but you get a lot more stuff and you don't have to worry about compatibility issues.
for $6/mo per user you get hosted exchange email, office web apps, sharepoint online and lync server. If you go up to the $16/mo it includes full PC version of Office 2010 pro and a few other things like AD integration and advanced archive support for exchange.
you can see the breakdowns here

I got a problem on my laptop, well two, but they might be related?
So waking up my computer from sleep takes a while, according to the performance thing in control panel, its one of my drivers. There was another one too, but I uninstalled that since I didnt need it.
Here is this one. Although I have no clue which driver it is? And I dunno if I use it?
<table style="width:auto;"><tr><td><a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/ZPshfDmudupls3nXZKSRh4ATDJWIoa58z2CASIv1wc0?feat=e mbedwebsite"><img src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-b9Vu5ccnH6I/TnLe3ZMEMZI/AAAAAAAABMI/FZcF94nOaX8/s400/drivers%252520not%252520working.PNG" height="375" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td style="font-family:arial,sans-serif; font-size:11px; text-align:right">From <a href="https://picasaweb.google.com/114083543970019378803/Acurazine?authuser=0&authkey=Gv1sRgCPSa1_6klI2F_AE &feat=embedwebsite">Acurazine</a></td></tr></table>
My other problem, I get the occasional freeze. It usually happens when I'm watching a video (no its not porn lol) could be anything from youtube, to streaming shows. Actually I think everytime its been while watching a video. My speakers just make this buzz sound/picture freezes and computer doesnt respond to anything. Before I thought my computer was overheating, now I think its due to a driver problem as well?

Stunna I figure your the guy to ask here. I have a box with Windows 7 and 6 mirrored drives and 1 SSD for the OS. I want to do a fresh install of the OS. Do I need to break the mirrors in disk management before I do the fresh install or can I just leave them and install 7 and to a re-sync?
I don't think you do. On the new system they should show up as "foreign disks". Right click on them and choose import foreign disk and it was want you to choose which drives go together. Select the two disks that were part of the same dynamic disk on the last OS and they should work just fine.
I don't think it will make a difference if you convert them to basic or take the dynamic disk offline.

Recover Tons of Wasted Disk Space with the New Windows Update Cleanup
http://lifehacker.com/recover-tons-o...ows-1442937625
I did this last night on a friend's dad's PC and was able to clean up about 6.5GB of space in obsolete updates! He called because he was running really low on space, so this update came out just in time.

Windows: Microsoft has released a Windows 7 update that adds a new option in the Disk Cleanup tool called Windows Update Cleanup. With it, you can free up several gigabytes of hard drive space from the bloated Windows Updates folder.
Windows Updates can be terrible space hogs. Windows saves every security update and hotfix—even if they're superseded by new updates—in the WinSxS directory. You can't just manually delete everything in that folder, because some files are needed just in case a system file gets corrupted or you need to roll back a Windows Update. P
So that's where this new Windows Update comes in. Released yesterday for Windows 7 SP1 machines, KB 2852386 adds the ability to cleanup all the obsolete updates in the WinSxS folder. It's a "recommended" update but not "critical," so you might not have installed it yet. You can either do a Windows Update to download it or head to the Knowledge Base article to grab it from there. (Note: Windows Update Cleanup is included in Windows 8.1.)P
Once you have it installed, run Disk Cleanup and click the "Clean up system files" button to find the new Windows Update Cleanup option. Note that running this cleanup will prevent you from uninstalling any updates you have currently applied, but you can manually download and install previous update versions if you ever need to rollback.P

Logmein is pretty spectacular for a free remote access solution.
