Microsoft: Windows 7 and Office 2010 Thread
I don't know where this belongs so I'm just going to put this here. IDK if it's because I updated Hyper-v and my desktop to SP1, or it's the new version of WHS or if it's because I put DD-WRT on my router but I've never seen consistent transfer speeds like this on my network!
I just transfered almost 30GB of video (no porn believe it or not!) to my WHS and got a pretty consistent 55-60MB/s transfer speed the whole time. I used to be lucky to get 25mb/s over gigabit.

That 30/30/30 step is a generic step that they say to do on all routers, they said to do it twice on mine. I fucked up while doing the 30/30/30 the first time by accidentally hitting the off switch on my router during the process and I thought I had bricked it but once I figured it out and turned it on and worked fine without even completing one 30/30/30 step.
So I basically just flashed it and restarted and it worked for me.

Aaaaaand just like that my PC is dead again! This time it's one of my Intel SSDs. Dead. Everything was going fine and then my system froze and I got a BSOD, then I restarted and my mobo didn't recognize my RAID array so I restarted again and this time it came back. It loaded windows got to the logon screen and froze again. I restarted again and I was greeted with this nice message

My reaction was similar to this
<object width="640" height="390"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/y0MKLnTqjLM&hl=en_US&feature=player_embedded&versi on=3"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/y0MKLnTqjLM&hl=en_US&feature=player_embedded&versi on=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="640" height="390"></embed></object>
I switched the SATA and power cables between the two SSDs to see if it was a bad SATA port on the mobo or if it was the SSD and was the SSD.
I've never heard of an SSD dying........until now!
Then I was thinking oh wait I just did a backup to WHS yesterday I can just get a new drive and restore to that! Wrong! I guess cause my drive was dying it never completed a backup. Good thing I keep all my data on a 2nd drive though. I just need to rebuild the array and reinstall W7.

Transferring 290gbs from D-Link DNS-323 to a usb drive
at a whopping 5.35mb/s
Never really paid attention til now. Aaaaaand just like that my PC is dead again! This time it's one of my Intel SSDs. Dead. "The TRIM command does not work on RAID volumes.[17][18] For a short time in March 2010, users were led to believe that the Intel Rapid Storage Technology 9.6 drivers supported TRIM in RAID volumes, but Intel later clarified that TRIM was supported for the BIOS settings of AHCI mode and RAID mode, but not if the drive was part of a RAID volume.[19]"
So in normal use trim will just keep things running fine if a chunk of the hd goes missing, but raid 0 will act like ... raid 0. Go bat shit insane.
*edit*
Except that isn't trim's job, blah.

Well since my drive is a RAID 0 and have of the file is on one drive and the other half on the other I can't take the drive out and mount it to read files off of it. When I plug it into another machine it recognizes it but can't read anything.
Like I said I switched the ports of the ssds. so port one was where the bad ssd was and port 2 was the good ssd. I switched them so port 2 was bad and port 1 was good then rebooted. When I did that the RAID controller recognized that port 2 now had the bad ssd and port 1 was fine. This told me that it was the SSD and not the RAID controller. I'm gonna hit up Intel and see if there's anything I can do to get it working again. If not I'll RMA it tomorrow. I'm not going to go deleting my RAID array or reformat my SSD before talking to Intel first cause that would ruin any chance of getting it working again.

SP1 is live to the public. you can download this ISO here.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/e...b-3a9b77cdfdda
or it should be on Windows Update later today. I notice updates usually show up around 1pm EST so check back then if you don't want to download the 1.9GB iso.

My Windows 7 VM is all up to date. I feel more secure already
Total time to complete was about 50 minutes (including time Windows update took to download it). Windows update also installed some other crap like Silverlight update. As best I can tell actual installation took about 25 minutes.

My WHS machine died on me the other day. Pretty sure the mobo is shot. Oh well. No huge loss. Thankfully I was able to recover all the data. Interestingly, the files reside on the drives normally. Was able to hook them up one at a time to my desktop and just copy them off like any other drive. Between that and scrapping out a few other machines I've got 7 drives sitting on my desk collecting dust.
Word 2010...
When I right click in a document, this giant effing menu appears with 300 formatting options when all I want to do is past something. Pissing me off royally.
Any way to suppress this?
Yes, I am aware of Ctrl-V....

I have 10 options.I think the
are messing with your settings.Depending on where you click in your document there may be more. For example if you right click in a bulleted list or an indented line, you will see the extra options for that.
Also you may have additional actions enabled. Right click>>additional actions>>options then either disable them or remove the un-needed ones.
This is awesome!

of course for some reason it was fucked up and wouldnt load anything we wanted or something cant remember. so we didnt really use the computer.

Here's one for the experts.
I just installed windows 7 on my new box. I have it hooked up to my samsung tv via hdmi and when I turn off the screen the box goes into sleep/hibernate. Is there a user configurable option to turn this off?

Pro Tip: Don't install SP1 before installing Remote Server Adminstrative Tools (RSAT). If you install RSAT and then update to SP1 your skrait but if you do it the other way than
You'll have uninstall SP1 then install RSAT and then reinstall SP1. Or if you're like me and installed a clean copy of Win 7 that came slipstreamed with SP1 then you're fucked since you can't uninstall Sp1. you have to wait until April until they release RSAT compatibile with SP1.

Anyone here use RSAT besides me? My bosses have never heard of it

I'm late to the Windows 7 party. So the verdict on this is...good then? I'm buying a new computer and I'm wondering if I should keep the Windows 7 it's bundled with, or scrap it and install Windows XP.
I mean, 7 isn't too much of a hog with resources, is it? All I know is that a lot of the programs I run don't yet have support for Windows 7. Don't ask why

Go windows 7, XP is an old outdated OS that's now on the way out. If you need XP then get Windows 7 professional. I comes with a feature called XP Mode which allows you to run XP in a virtual machine which means you can run all your old XP programs side by side with 7 programs. That will give you basically 100% compatibility for programs all the way back to windows 3.0

Oh well, maybe they'll start pushing more support for it anyways.
