Microsoft: Windows 7 and Office 2010 Thread
Oh and I wasn't able to find an Academic 2007 ISO so I'm just setting the girl up with the free online version of Office, it should be all that she needs. Plus it gives her the ability to work on her documents from any computer, save them online and print them from anywhere.
Does anyone know how to fix my problem.. I usually can find solutions using google, but no luck
Every morning when I logon to my work computer I have to go to Folder Options and check "Hide extensions for known file types." This is so annoying because I work with renaming files just about everyday and it's a lot easier/faster to rename files when the extension is hidden.
Does anyone know why it would keep resetting every time I log off my computer? Thanks.

1. Check with IT and make sure they don't have a logon script that would reset this (unlikely). Ask if they have a policy against hiding the extension or if you have enough privileges on the machine to make the change.
2. Make the change and then restart your computer. For some reason the change s not recording in the registry. I wonder when the last time you restarted was.
It would seem to me that IT enabled it in group policy. But then usually you shouldn't be able to change it back.
You shouldn't have to restart you PC after making the change, so if it's changing back after you logout or restart your PC then yeah there's probably a logon script that enables it.
Some people think that having the extensions hidden by default is a security flaw so you're IT dept might choose to enable it.

Check msconfig and see if something is running at login that would enable this. Is this on Windows 7 or XP? If it's 7 then it would seem to me that you would get a UAC prompt anytime something tried to edit the registry, unless UAC is turned off....

What is your process exactly when renaming a file? If I hit F2 or (right click -> rename), it automagically highlights the name but does not highlight the extension so I can begin typing immediately and when I'm done I just hit enter. The cursor never makes it beyond the period so the extension always remains intact.
Convinced there has to be a script or something changing the settings.. When I Restore Defaults it changed Hidden Files & Folders to Don't Show & Checks Hide Extensions for known file types. So when I restart it shows hidden files and unhides extensions for known file types..
Maybe try this registry setting: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\Advanced
Look under HideFileExt. If it's zero (0) then hidden, if you want to show, enter 1.
If it reverts back to 0 after reboot or refresh then you must have downloaded some shareware program in the past (maybe another file explorer of some kind?). The other thing you could try is to reset to default, refresh and then try again. Maybe that will give you a new lease on life (of folder options that is)

Hopefully the Windows one is next.

Yay for free stuff!
If everyone paid for what they use as they should, I would imagine no one would have to lock anything down. It's lame that I have to carry a big key fob from Acura but I am worried that if I don't, someone might steal it.
Service Pack 1 just went to RTM phase!
It will be released to MSDN and Technet on Feb 16th and to everyone else on the 22nd!
Make sure you've done your updates over the past two weeks because there were a couple prerequisite updates that came out yesterday and last week.
I'm super excited because most of the new things in SP1 are Hyper-V server things like RemoteFX and Dynamic Memory Management.
Just today I installed Vista and XP in my Hyper-V Machine and I'm starting to run out of RAM so I ordered another 4GB which will put me at 12GB.

OMG they're taking FOREVER! I've had all previous updates installed and they're still taking forever and a day! My win 7 desktop with quad-core and SSD RAID 0 array took about 30-45min and my hyper-v and server 2008r2 are at almost 2hrs and still haven't restarted yet.
That's great software for you. Can't wait to deploy it in the datacenter. At least with XP/2003 it copied the files rebooted and was done. With 2008/Win7 it copies the files, reboots, does some more stuff, and then maybe it's done.
Well the reboot part was relatively fast. It just takes a while to get to the part where it's ready to reboot. That's the vast majority of the waiting.
Once you choose restart it does the Configuring Service pack thing. Goes to 30% then restarts and goes from 30%-100%. That part took 2-3 minutes. So you're server is only down for a couple minutes and not hours.

Fuuuuuu! I can't figure out this RemoteFX. First it says it requires a DirectX 10 GPU in the server. So I went out and picked up a GTX 430 tonight which is a low power DX11 GPU with 1GB RAM. Installation went very smooth (surprise! at least that didn't suck like I expected it to) and now I see no way of enabling RemoteFX. It tells me to add the Remote Virtualization Role in Server Manager but I won't allow me to add any roles. Soooooo.........
Not that I expect any help cause I think I'm the only one on here that runs a Hyper-V 2008 R2 Core Server. Just ranting
Dynamic Memory is working though! You choose the min. and max amount of memory for each VM Guest and you can set a weight for each VM so more important VMs can have priority over others.

Fuckin :ghey:! MS is intentionally limiting which Guest OS's get support for Dynamic Memory. They support 2003 Server but not XP or 2003 SBS, they support Vista Business and Ultimate but not Vista Home and they support Server 2008 R2 and Win 7 Pro and Ultimate but not WHS!
I know it has something to do with enforcing their ghey licensing virtualization rules but those are ghey too.
