Microsoft: Windows 7 and Office 2010 Thread
Hay just moved all my old programs from my old computer to the new one. Weird thing is that one of my programs lags pretty hard for some reason. Is that common for old programs running on Windows 7? Last update for the program I use was Feb 06... so no Windows 7 support.
Just curious, since everything else seems to run fine (even before updating)

Just wanted to stop in and say that I hate the new microsoft office word. It is great and it fucking sucks. Everything is hidden, granted it is cleaned up nicely, but I hate having to relearn a piece of software that only changed a little bit at a time for many years and then all of a sudden everything is different. It took me forever to figure out how to print. Fucking quick print is nonsense. Not everything I print is going to be printed the same way, at least bring up the old dialog window with print options. Does anyone know if that is still there and I just need to turn it on? I had to use print preview which takes longer.
Where is the file button..? Not there. The only options along the top are home, insert, page layout, reference, mailings, review, and view. Even the "quick action" bar doesn't have file as an option. That is what I'm saying shit is laid out all whack. Oh just realized this is office word 2007. Still wtf?
I changed my audio device. Selected the new one, installed all the drivers for it, clicked "set as default" then "apply" afterwards I get sound out of it, so I know it all works.
Yet when I start up the computer, I almost always have to go back in and de-select that VDeck whatever thing that came with W7.

^lolwat?
x100 I'm guessing it was something the manufacturer installed with the mobo or sound card.
Well I guess that's what I get for not really looking into it. Good news is that I'm sure I can uninstall it then!

hey guys, I have a tech question.
I moved 98GB of files from my C: drive to another drive to clear up space. However after I did this, the free space did not show up on C:! does anyone know what to do? I tried disk cleanup and there wasn't anything in there either. Nothing in recycle bin either (it said it was too large and it must be deleted permanently). Oh and I cant run Disk Defrag on C: this is what it looks like and it doesnt give me any options:

thanks in advance,

so uh.. yeah. I figured out what happened. I had moved the files from I to N, not from C to N. so please disregard. :thanks:
photo management is a job in itself. I have a 500gb hd on my laptop at work and currently 8gb free... over 400gb of photos just there. and much of it can be streamlined, but you can imagine how much time that takes! and multiple drives with redundant backups at work and at home... its crazy. like I could spend all day doing cleaning if I wanted and I'd never be done.

have you guys seen this? (sorry, if it's been posted, but searched "kinect" in this thread and nothing came up)

Is there a way to email an alert if a you get a certain event in the event viewer? One of my hard drives died today
and it had been giving errors for a couple weeks but I never checked and I lost my drive that had my Exchange 2010 stuff on it. It's not a biggie since it wasn't in production just something for me to dick around with. Actually probably better because that means I have to go through the process of installing it again so I'll have to relearn everything I did before.
I'd like to get an alert every time there's a disk, ntfs, atapi error.

In regards to kinect they announced that the Kinect SDK for Windows will be out within the next couple of months.
There should be lots of even cooler stuff coming out when that's made available since it will give developers an easier way to program for the Kinect than the hack that's available now.

http://www.petri.co.il/how-to-use-ev...-event-ids.htm
In Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista, a new capability was introduced to Event Viewer. This feature, called Custom Tasks, can be used to assign a custom task such as running a batch file, sending an e-mail alert, or popping up a message – anytime a specific event it raised. You can read more about this on my "Assigning Custom Tasks to Events in Vista" article.
Sweet! The irony is that it was my hard drive for my email server that died. I hope this works on hyper-v.
SPEAKING of Hyper-V! I've made lots of changes in the past few days and have figured out how to enable all the features I wanted out of it. If you haven't used a Server Core OS you may not know the difficulties that can come with it. The benefits of a Core Server OS like Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 is that it's very slimmed down and doesn't have all the unnecessary bells in whistles which means reduced resources and reduced target attack landscape since it doesn't have a browser or explorer.exe. This also makes it harder to use and enabling extra features was different than what I was used to in normal Server OS.
However I was able to create file shares on the Hyper-V OS so I could access files on the drive from another PC. Before that file access was only through command line. I also enabled Windows Backup included support for backing up .VHD files and the RemoteFX feature that I thought was only for a normal Server OS that was running the hyper-V role and not a hyper-v core OS.
The main tool I used to enable all these features easily was Core Configurator 2.0, I had read many articles about hyper-v but never came across this tool until a few days ago, I wish I had found it years ago. It would've saved me hours of work, but I'd probably still suck at CLI too.
Anyways if you run a Windows Core OS then check out this free tool, it's a godsend!

...so, my laptop isn't updating... when I power it down, it says something like "Windows is updating.... steps 1 of 3"... or something like that, but it's NOT completing. It'll eventually shut down. But when I start it up again. There's the little exclamation mark indicator again
can anyone help?
can anyone help?
edit: Nevermind... I guess it finally updated after like the 10th power down

How do you tell which update it is (was)?

go to windows update and choose view update history or whatever and it will show you the list of all updates and whether they failed or not. Then double click on the update and it will give you the error code. then google that error code and windows update
Actually supportspace that Warren and I work for just signed Microsoft as a partner we are or will be soon handling support for updates that aren't working. The service is free to customors but MS pays us some money to remote in and fix the problem so if you can't get it working, holla atcha boi!

i think windows 7 update crashed the fark out of my computer this morning. only the bios booted. after the bios came up it was a black screen and hitting the power button instantly turned the system off, instead of having to hold it down for 5-10 seconds, so i knew the OS wasn't loading. after about 10 power drains and retries the "your system couldn't be started" window came up and it ran a self-checker that ended with it saying that it couldn't be self-fixed.
of course, i powered it down and it loaded into windows on the next try. i ran like 10 vispy checkers but it only came up with cookie trackers. i didn't suspect it was a virus, if they just crash my system they're not able to gain anything. ran a chkdsk thinking it was a bad sector on the hard drive and nothing came up.
mysteriously, my windows update setting was set to auto when i always leave it at manual and i noticed that it auto downloaded some updates when i got ready to turn it off and back on to test it. can't think of what else to blame it on.

so been noticing that while watching live video feeds that my video stutters alot, its been doing that even with a fresh install of windows. it gets worse when webpages are loading when i surf the net and watching the streams. (and no im not just talking about pr0n here)
i also notice when i game that im geting alot of lag spikes and alot of choke.
wondering getting a dedicated network card would help the issue?
im using the onboard NIC.

bad cable, NIC, router or modem
run an unlimited ping test to your router and to a website like google.
open two cmd prompts and type
ping 192.168.0.1 -t in one and ping www.google.com -t in another.
Then watch and see if packets start dropping and check the response time to see if it fluctuates wildly. If you're wired then normal response time to the router is 2ms or less, usually less than 1ms. The google one will be longer and fluctuate more often since it's the interwebs. however if it's going from 50ms to 1500ms then dropping packets then somethings wrong. If things are ok when you ping the router but not when you ping google then your modem is probably crappy. Try resetting it and if that doesn't fix it then you know who to call.....
you can hit ctrl+c to cancel the ping tests...

Every time I change my preferences, it gets reversed the next time I start up the computer....
I had no idea windows had this, requires a microsoft mouse, or at least setting yours up with their drivers.
I have mine set to wheel button click, though I never use it. It's been there since vista
