Microsoft: Windows 7 and Office 2010 Thread
i prob won't touch them just annoying thier just randomly numbered and lettered file folders with nothing in them. right now i'm moving everything back over and installing office.
oh those folders that look like "a7efg89e9g65g8b8j8e4f6d4v6d4g7d8n92r4d5n5z2" I have a bunch of those on my external drive for some reason. Not sure why though. I tried to delete them a couple days ago and it wouldn't let me cause I didn't have permission.
I have 3 of those folders in my root folder. Two of them contain .vdm files and the other contains an amd64 folder and an i386 folder (both empty). My computer has an intel processor, which makes the amd64 folder hweird.
I delete them and they just come keep coming back.
did some of you actually try this??

I've never touched Media Center in any of its past iterations but I really never remember hearing anything glowing about them. Well I just messed around with the Windows 7 Media Center for the first time and you know what? It's pretty damn nice. I doubt I'll ever do much with it since I can't get data over to my TV and stereo and I hardly ever entertain. But it is nice. Oh, except for the music visualizers. They all suck compared to the iTunes one.
Nope. PC gamer exclusively. Stand alone BDP in the home theater and my Panasonic plasma doesn't support DLNA. Even setting all that aside, the wireless signal from my current router is lousy over by the TV and I can't pull any wire to there due to the construction of my townhouse building.
yes this is well documented in this thread. The version I'm using is from the win741.com site, I saved $170 going that way! No don't get the boot CD especially since they're offering the file as an ISO now. you just need a DVD burner and a free image burning software such as "img burn" then burn the ISO disk image to DVD and then boot and install.
Btw, i haven't read the ENTIRE thread, it's way too much.
But is it true that, One window 7 CD can be use on 3 different computer?
Because i actually can get window 7 for that $30.. and another one for only $9 (shipping fee)
its all OEM . no fake.
Even if you don't play games you should still get a PS3 if you want blu-ray. It only does everything!

Actually I was having trouble streaming from my PC to the PS3 when the PS3 was on wifi. So I recently plugged it via it's gigabit ethernet (I told it does everything) and now I have no connection problems. Well I do cause when I open the network tab in tskmgr it shows up to 15% network utilization for my PCs gigabit connection. Which means nothing short of gigabit is gonna stream my videos fast enough. Which is crazy cause they're only 2.2mbps h.264s. How is that eating up so much bandwidth? I guess I could drop them down to 1.5mbps since they're h.264, I'll have to play with this some more. Sorry for going off topic.

Windows 7 and that's it! You just have to enable it. Go to network and sharing center then click on choose homegroup and sharing options and then check "stream my pics, music and videos to all devices on my home network". I think you have to have homegroup turned on in order to see this option so make sure you've done that first but that's done in the same window. After that the new media foundation with stream mpeg, mp4, h.264, divx, aac, mp3, even dvr-ms and .wtv MS proprietary recorded TV formats to the PS3. W7 automatically handles the transcoding to a format the PS3 can recognize. Once your PS3 can see the media it can play it. Pretty sweet huh. Jupiter, OS X can do that too right? Oh wait it can't.
If you install the .mkv preview from divx it'll handle mkvs as well, there's still some bugs with this though.

so i tried deleting window.old throug hthe disk cleanup like microsoft suggests, however i do not get anything in disk cleanup that states to remove old windows files. i really don't want to try to manually delete it and press yes a million times...
Ok, I installed Windows 7 on my Vista laptop with Intel 945 graphics, and I have an annoying glich which I can't seem to fix. Every time I boot up the laptop, the resolution changes automatically from 1280x800 (recommended setting) to 1024x768. I then have to go into screen resolution and change it back to the recommended setting so that the screens fills out. I've tried searching on the web and downloaded the latest drivers from Intel's website, and still have the same problem. Any suggestions?
the amd64 is kinda legacy. Amd was the first CPU to have 64bit code in fact they created the 64 bit code and later Intel licensed it from them and now they run the same code. So back when AMD was the only CPU with 64bit code MS released WIN XP 64bit and Server 2003 R2 64bit and at the time they only ran on AMD and MS put AMD64 into the code. So it's still there today, I'm sure intel doesn't like it but they didn't create the 64 bit extensions we use today, AMD did. So that means you're using 64bit Windows.
I'm using 32-bit XP.

I'm enjoying the new less annoying UAC right now. Cause I've got someones hard drive plugged in via USB and I've got to take control of the folders over and over again so I can view them. In Vista I would've gotten a UAC prompt for each one, no mas in 7.
Wow, it worked, thanks Stunna! I don't know which program it was, because I removed several from startup, but now I get some sort of internal error message. Computer works fine though, so far.

Windows chooses the best display settings, including screen resolution, refresh rate, and color, based on your monitor.
I found out what's creating those hexidecimal folders. It's windows update. I noticed in my work PC that I had one made today so I thought I haven't done anything except install an update. So I open update and compared the time that the folder was created to the time the update was installed and they matched. I checked the dates for the other hex folders and they all had corresponding updates. Mine were for Security essentials malware definition updates but it could've been caused by Windows defender definition updates too since they're the same. I'll check my home PC later.
I noticed one of those folders myself last night. What's odd to me is that it was on a partition on a separate physical disk from the OS. This is, however, where I installed XP Mode so maybe the folder was created by Virtual PC being packaged as a stand-alone update. Regardless, kind of sloppy on the OS's part.
Ok. So I opened one of the hexidecimal .vdm files with notepad and pulled this info:
M i c r o s o f t C o r p o r a t i o n . A l l r i g h t s r e s e r v e d . B

It looks like they are from Microsoft Malware Protection Center. I think you're right about Windows update, Stunna. I've had these folders for a while on my work PC, but only after we started receiving windows updates.

Shot in the dark here, but does anyone remember reading if MSDN subscribers got access to RTM code of all the Windows 7 editions at the same time? I have a software vendor for an important application which is probably going to drag their feet on certifying their product for Win 7. I'd like to be able to legitimately say to them "What have you been doing for the past X weeks since the RTM code was made available to developers?" If the different editions were piece-mealed out to MSDN at different dates though, then I can't really hold their feet to the fire. Or at least as close to the fire as I'd like to.
yeah pretty sure they all came out at the same time. why wouldn't they? I think it was Aug 6th or 7th. The code RTMed in mid July and the different editions just have features turned on or off. Still the same codebase.
