Microsoft: Windows 7 and Office 2010 Thread
Well the Vista way was you choose custom the first time then you choose upgrade the 2nd time. I'm gonna do it myself in a sec and I'll report back but from what I've heard you can just do custom install it will work. It should cause W7 install is different than Vista cause it asks for the product key AFTER install is complete and not before it starts.
here's a video to watch while I'm installing W7. It's the launch keynote and they do some cool demos of W7. First that kylie girl comes out and she's is wicked cute so watch that then they show of the "play to" feature streaming from one laptop to 16 different devices thought that was pretty cool then at about 40 mins in they go over all the cool new PCs coming out with W7. Definitely watch that! They got the Dell Adamo XPS at the end.

Just installed Windows 7 Home Premium on my 3.5 year old Sony VAIO FJ-270. I got on the 29.99 student deal. I have had the RC version installed on my desktop for a while but I am surprised how fast its running on such an old laptop. Sadly I cant have the Aero style since my graphics card cant handle it. Oh well, this laptop is my "netbook" now for school.
The Play To feature makes me wish my TV was DLNA compatible. Unfortunately, it's not. I wonder if any of those media adapter/streamer/box/thingies can be used as a DLNA end point? Doesn't matter though, I don't have data by my TV and the wireless signal from my router is puny so that would need to be taken care of first.
BTW, could Play To be used to show photos? I'm not familiar with the capabilities of WMP so I have no idea if it has a slideshow feature.

My day keeps getting better! MS has released a few personalization options for W7 and included is three Zune themes! I've been wanting Zune desktops for a while so finally they're here and they're cool. There's a bunch of other stuff to download here

speaking of which, last night I tried using my old Creative Zen mp3 player.. and to upload tracks it requires Creative Mediasource software. I downloaded the supposedly compatible version (for Vista 64) and it BSOD'ed on the initial step of install - after it rebooted, the whole desktop was jacked, the icons were in an Arial font, I was kind of like WTF. I shutdown completely and let it sit a few minutes started it back up and it was fine. But, just a reminder to never install Creative software. POS. Only reason I tried it is because I know I'm installing 7 soon.
Woo hoo, Amazon just shipped my windows 7. Hope it comes today so I can goof around with it all weekend. I guess I'll be dual boot for a bit until I get all the drivers/etc I want.

Just did a format and clean install of 7. Flawless victory. Well, aside from losing some data I forgot to backup...
anyways. f'ing QUICK install. Real happy so far, I can already tell its faster. One of the things I tested and noticed problem with Vista was in Firefox, when just dragging to resize the window - if I drag it to very small and then to full-size real quick, it was stuttering the frame, it was not smooth. I'm quite sure that means there was something restricting the performance. Don't know what, but anyways it's not doing this in 7. Very smooth. Will keep updated as needed.

I'm loving W7 right now too! I setup my PS3 for a gigabit connection and using W7 Media Foundation to transcode my videos on the fly to stream to my PS3! This works on pretty much any video that W7 can play which is just about anything so h.264, divx, WMV, mov, avi, mpg2, etc. Even TV shows recorded in Media Centers .wtv format can be played back on the PS3 cause W7 sees the formats that the PS3 supports and then handles all the conversions. yeah I'm lovin it. I just wish that my WHS did this but I know the next version will.

It's gone. Sort of. Well it's very well hidden. The new default taskbar is a combination quick launch toolbar / taskband (the place where open windows were displayed on the old taskbar). W7 by default keeps an apps open window grouped with it's icon. You can turn this off if you want but I like it, it turns the taskbar into one big quick launch bar.
Anyways, if you go to the www.win741.com website and give them your school @.edu email address then they'll send you a link to where you can download right then a copy of Professional for $30. So you don't have to wait until tuesday to pick up a copy.

For $30? The local school I saw was selling it for almost $60 but that was the ultimate version. OH shit! It just hit me! I now have a way to get W7 ultimate for less than $60!!!

What's the big deal? Now it's called pinning to the taskbar. Now you can pin to the start menu and the task bar. Sounds great to me.
Just right click anything in your start menu and choose "Pin to taskbar". Then, drag it to the left where the old quick launch used to be.

If you know someone with an@.edu email address then use that way, or Technet. Or you could have hosted your own launch party and they would've sent you a free copy in the mail. Or you could host your own Windows 7 torrenting party
