Microsoft: Windows 7 and Office 2010 Thread
wow, i just noticed that windows 7 automatically switches over the default audio device when i change it.
(i have a USB gaming headset and regular speakers hooked up)
with vista and xp i had to close the program and restart it for it to switch over.

costco has windows 7 for pre-sale at $114.
HP has got really cool stuff coming out with Windows 7. Their Touchsmart software just got updated and adss some cool features including Netflix, Hulu, Recipes, music and of course Windows7 running underneath.

It comes in a 20 and 23in model priced at $899 and $1049 respectively. HP will release a business oriented version of the touchsmart 9100 as well and it will have real-time info (whatever that means) and HD video conferencing. Also they're updating their existing tx2 multitouch tablet with this software as well. Cool Stuff. I'd only be interested in the tx2 but I'd go to best buy and play with this new stuff.

Just for you Stogie there will be a Windows 7 sponsored version of Family Guy
This just screams FAIL! Hopefully it's not as bad as I think it's gonna be. I was however able to find a screenshot from one of the scenes in the upcoming episode.

Microsoft, meet the "Family Guy." Looking to drum up sales for the upcoming release of Windows 7, Microsoft today announced that it is working with "Family Guy" creator Seth MacFarlane on an unique television event that will air Nov. 8 on Fox. The variety show -- featuring MacFarlane and Family Guy co-star Alex Borstein -- will be presented commercial free by Microsoft in the style of the old Texaco Star Theater.
But the program will go one step further, with Microsoft's ad agencies working with MacFarlane and crew to feature "unique Windows 7-branded programming that blends seamlessly with show content," according to a press release.
"We're working with FOX on innovative brand integrations that will show how the power and simplicity of Windows 7 can enhance the content FOX viewers love," said Gayle Troberman, general manager of consumer engagement and advertising at Microsoft in the release. "We have simplified the PC with Windows 7, and together with FOX, we're simplifying entertainment."
The program -- tentatively titled "Family Guy Presents: Seth & Alex's Almost Live Comedy Show" -- will air two weeks after the Windows 7 debut on Oct. 22. The 30-minute show will include live performances, original animations, surprise celebrity guests and more.
AdAge has more details, including additional comments from Troberman who notes that the Windows 7 launch is one of the "largest consumer-advertising investments the company has made."
The partnership actually goes deeper than the 30-minute TV show, with Fox and Microsoft also agreeing to work together on a 12-week college tour that includes Windows 7 demos and Fox-sponsored outdoor movie nights hosted by stars from "Family Guy.".
MacFarlane is a funny dude, but we're not sure he can beat the comedic value of Microsoft's other Windows 7 promotion

Well my order is in. I should have all the parts by the middle of next week and I'm assuming the OS pre-order early the following week. Looks like I have a fighting shot of being up and running by the end of the month.
x64 Ultimate (OEM)
X58-based Motherboard
i7-920
6 GB DDR3
AMD 5870 video card (Two!
)
150 GB WD Velociraptor for the OS
Corsair 1000W Modular P/S
Coolermaster Cosmos Case
The only bummer was that Newegg was sold out of both the 1 and 2 TB Caviar Black drives that I planned to use for data. Considering what I spent on everything else, I'll probably just bite the bullet and pick them up at Worst Buy.
I decided to stick with the X58/920 combo since it supports full 16x/16x dual GPU operation and that Intel supposedly said the first gen of consumer six core processors would work only on an X58 board and not a P55.

I'm curious why you chose the X58/i7 920 combo over the P55/i7 860 that I went with? Triple channel DDR3? From the benchmarks I've seen in most cases the 860 outperforms the 920 or the are the same, throw in the cheaper price for the mobos and RAM and I was sold. No SSD!?!?
Speaking of which I got my Intel SSD up and running and this shit is fast. I installed W7 from a USB flash drive to the SSD in about 12 minutes compared to 15min when installing from USB to normal HDD. W7 boots in about half the time and apps open instantly, Photoshop CS4 64-bit opens in about 1 second and Premiere Pro CS4 in about 2-3 seconds. I can go and open apps one after another an they just pop open. Pretty cool! Unfortunately it didn't speed up my internet connection which currently is teh suck. It is free so that's great but hopefully tomorrow I'll find out if I'm gonna get upgraded to something faster than 2mbps ADSL.
Now my i7 860 is pretty sweet, yesterday I was running handbrake and encoded dvd to h.264 at about 115fps and with the same settings my old q6600 quad core only did about 55fps. These two-pass encodes still take forever though.

When are Laptop manufacturers going to get wise to the customization trend and allow people to upload their art/images for use as the cover graphic?
I mean, if Capital One can do it so can Dell.

OCZ DDR3 4gb dual channel 7-7-7-20 $80
Core i7 860 $250
that's $40 under list price!Intel X-25M 80gb $240 Newegg's still selling it for $290 and were selling it as high as $350!
Kept my 550w PS, case, hard dive, and optical drives no need to upgrade those. Still waiting for Nvidia's new GPUs to come out, they're supposed to kick serious ass at GPGPU computing.
I notice that this new system is much more powerful than my last yet at idle it uses 35w less power!
I did dismantle my WD Raptor RAID 0 and replaced it with an SSD so that should've saved me a lot of power.
The beta build of Firefox 3.6 has tab preview support in the W7 taskbar.
It's still a beta so it's got some bugs.

I guess I should mention it here. My job is having a Windows 7 launch party (not my idea). They didn't sign up through the launchparty.com website so we don't get a free version of W7 Ultimate but I guess we're getting some shirts, flash drives and a free copy of O2k7 Ultimate. Also MS is covering $200 is supplies including alcohol so my boss went and bought $300 in snack, beer and waffle mix! It's on Oct 22 from 3-7 EST, you guys can come if you want!

The things is no one at my job has really played with W7 it wasn't until just this week that they installed it to start messing with it
So I think I'll be doing the demos cause they don't know shit.

I guess the reason why were doing this is cause we never get to see our clients unless there is something wrong. So it is a chance to hangout and build stronger relationships with our good clients. Hopefully if they like what they see they might put an upgrade to W7 in the budget and that would be increased business for us. Add in the fact the MS is paying $200 for the supplies doesn't seem like a bad idea to have one.
Unfortunately, I can't replicate using common Windows programs. WMP lets you delete stuff while it's playing the file. Notepad and picture viewer don't lock files, either. I was able to do it trying to rename a PDF while it was open in Acrobat.

Windows 7:
I'd like to know quickly what program is using my flash drive that's not allowing me to eject it. I hear sysinternals process explorer will let me know but I'd rather not open that.
So in the next few days I'm going to be getting my niece either a thin-n-light which is the product in between netbooks and laptops. I'm leaning towards the new Acer 1810TZ 11.6in Timeline. It comes with:

hey fucktard! you do know that the resource monitor in Windows 7 will tell you what process is using what file on every disk, right? Who bothered to spawn you, and why!?
dont know a way around it.
but when i formatted from vista to win7 RC, itunes said that my iphone was already synced to another computer and that i would have to erase all the contents to be able to use it
i did a little hacking and changed the itunes library key or whatever its called to what my old computer had.
i was able to get back all the apps and stuff, but all the information in the apps were gone, it was like starting new.
if you know how to get around it, please share

i don't have an iphone but use itunes and i've reloaded my machine numerous times and always had itunes work without issue. I just always copy the entire itunes folder(its in your profile folder) over to the machine which contains the library files.
Did you copy any files?
Did you copy any files?
The best way to transfer iTunes is to copy the iTunes folder in that's located in the My Music folder to an external drive. Then once you complete the W7 upgrade you can copy the folder back to the new My music folder BEFORE installing iTunes. Then install iTunes and it should just update the files if needed. I'm not sure if you'll have to delete everything off your iphone or not. I'm not sure, it's been too long. Since I don't use my iPhone as my music device I really don't care about syncing to my PC. I just plug it into my PC to do updates and that's it. I can download apps, music and movies directly to the device and I get my contacts, and calendar updates over activesync exchange connection. If I really need to I can email a note to myself.
