Mizouse do yourself a favor and go read through the first few pages of this thread. All the new features like these have been listed by me many times. Especially the new "Arrange by: Penis" feature that Stogie was asking for!

Also Win+ any number launches the program that corresponds to that position on the taskbar. But that's been there since Vista's quick launch but still was a pretty unknown feature back then.
It appears that Win 7 may have reverted back to the OS discs being "tied" to a particular edition and distribution type like XP was. Not really a concern for the average individual, but a moderate PIA if you routinely help on other people's systems. What I want to know is if this only effects reinstalls or if it also effects the recovery console and repair functionality.

So imagine our surprise when we’re taking a look at our TechNet copies of Windows 7 and find that there’s a different installation disc for each distribution of Windows. With the version of the Windows installer that comes with Win7, there is a new file at /Sources/ei.cfg that tells the Windows installer what OS it should install. Here’s what the file looks like from the ultimate disc:
[EditionID]
Ultimate
[Channel]
Retail
[VL]
0
When the Windows installer sees this file, it becomes keyed to whatever distribution the file specifies. In this case with an Ultimate disc, we cannot install Home Premium or Professional. We have not yet had a chance to test OEM and retail keys since we don’t have both, however it certainly looks like the installer is going to make a distinction there too.

hmm... I just ordered a new computer (Dell), and its coming with Vista, with a free upgrade to 7. When they send me the 7 disk, can I just install it over Vista or is it recommended to do a clean install? Obviously the former would save me a lot of work, but I want to install 7 in the most optimal way possible.
its Vista 64 premium.
thx in advance,

XP Pro 32 can only see 3.5GB of RAM, I thought?
got a i7-975 Extreme with 8GB and 2x320 RAID 0. I'll be using external drives for storage.
Even if XP could support all 8GB's somehow, I think it's the right move to use 7 on this box.

yes due to the memory limitation of 32 bit it can only see 4gb. You do know that by going 8gb you're reduced to a dual channel memory setup instead of tri channel that 6gb or 12gb would've given you. How will you be able to sleep at night knowing that your system isn't running as fast as it possible could be? Your 3.33ghz quad core processor will now be starved for memory bandwidth!!!
FYI - Legitimate free copy of Win 7 professional if you attend one of Microsoft's "New Efficiency" launch events for Win 7/Server 2008 R2/Exchange 2010. It looks like they're being held in 25 major metro areas.

yeah I saw that! this was how I got my free copy of Office 2007 Pro! I signed up online and said I worked my company and went to a keynote and a couple sessions and then they gave you the free disc and I was out by 1pm. Definitely worth it if you're in the area. You don't even have to be in IT (I wasn't at the time). This time though they aren't coming to Tampa so it's not worth the 8-10hrs of driving to go to Miami and back.
What's funny was that a few months later MS calls for me at work (I was a server at a restaurant) to talk to me about deploying vista, I had to BS that call
I get a call from work "umm, some guy from Microsoft called for you."

holy sh*t.. seriously? Vista 64 just BSOD'ed on me. WTF. First day of owning this computer. Haven't seen a BSOD on any of my other computers in AGES. Even my EIGHT YEAR OLD P4-2.26 - with XP Pro, of course. lol. Not saying that XP doesn't BSOD, just that I haven't encountered one in ages.
I know, user error, right.

Don't worry, I'll keep my bitching to a minimum. Overall, other than little things, like being unable to run COD4, Vista isn't so bad.

You were discussing changes to memory recently. Bad ram is a huge source of blue screens. Just resolved a case of bad ram on a workstation last week. I thought it was a bad driver or malware, but after it crashed during a service pack install on a fresh load, I went looking at hardware.
what's the BSOD error code? Why don't your try bluescreen view.

but I'd say either driver or memory is probably your problem, especially on such a cutting edge setup like you got.

hey so if I took one of the memory sticks out and arranged the other 3 in the Triple configuration it would be better for my system, eh? I think I could "get by" with 6GB for a while.
I'm annoyed that Dell site says nothing about choosing a Triple config for the RAM on this kind of system - they make "recommendations" about other crap, why not this too.

its been like that since... windows 95?

you talking about 32bit OS memory cap? What dell did you get? SSD?
