Microsoft: Windows 7 and Office 2010 Thread
So I just ordered the parts for my new system and all the parts should be here by the end of the week. my new system is
Core i7 860 2.8GHz quad core w/HT and turbo boost up to 3.46GHz
MSI P55 mobo
4GB DDR3 1333MHz 7-7-7-20 timings
Intel 80GB X-25M Gen 2 SSD
I'm gonna keep using my 8800GT for now and I will probably upgrade to the next nvidia GPU when it comes out in the next few months. It's supposed to be a revolutionary new GPU designed for GPGPU computing which is what I'm interested in. I'd like to run two X-25Ms in a RAID 0 in the future and that would give me 500mb/s transfer speeds!
I'm so excited for my new i7 860 cause it does hyper-threading turning 4 into 8 cores. I plan on taking my entire DVD library and converting it into x.264 and storing them on the server and I'll be able to play them from my PS3 or any computer in the house!
I'm gonna install Windows 7 from a flash drive to SSD so I'll be able to see how well that works!

Sounds good with the new system. I'm currently trying to finalize the parts for my next build. I've got everything decided except the freakin' motherboard. The one I like (Asus P6T Deluxe V2) looks good except that it places the two PCIe X16 slots for dual GPU use further apart than every other board I've seen. More space between the cards is fine. Better airflow, better cooling, etc... The thing is every single CrossFireX (or SLI) bridge cable seems too short for this config. I don't want to buy $600+ worth of video cards only to find that I have to use one of them at 8x because the bridge cable won't reach the other 16x slot.

the default browser for 64-bit windows is 32 bit IE8. I don't really know of a benefit of going 64bit for your browser.
Unfortunately, all the ASUS boards only seem to come with a SLI bridge and I'm going AMD. The video cards will obviously come with bridges, but they're the shorter length which are intended for "adjacent" slots. Ridiculous situation.
I also don't use IE... 32bit FF seems ok right now, so we'll see how it goes.

I'd imagine it's a really high speed interconnect to bridge two or more really powerful GPUs. it looks like a 1xPCI Express slot. I don't know of an interconnect that could provide enough throughput.

I think it will fit your mobo if you use the blue and white PCIe slots.

Thanks much for the cable offer!
I'll PM you in a day or two letting you know. I posted about this on Asus' own forums so I just want to let that ride for a bit to see if anyone over there replies back with anything definitive.

I just installed my new system which is pretty different from my old system and Windows 7 build 7048 booted up the first time in the new system with no BSOD or errors!
That's fargin awesome! I was not expecting this to work at all. I took a screenshot of my device manager after booting up. LOL

I think the list was actually longer than that, it was automatically installing drivers as I was doing the screenshot. OH and just for fun here's what my task manager looks like!

Hyper-threaded Quad Core FTMFW!

Yeah it's close to saturating the SATA bus but I guess that's a good problem to have. Just wait until I get another Intel X25-M and run them RAID 0! 500mb/s transfer speeds!:hwhat:
my unfortunate overall impression of the i7 Extreme 975? I don't feel like its as fast as it should be. Especially for running filters in Photoshop. I feel like it should blow through those, it honestly does not feel very fast. I just feel like it should be much faster.
For example running a cross-process filter setting in Alienskin Exposure 2 on a 4368x2912 image takes 4-5 seconds. For as big a jump as it was from my C2D 2.0 laptop, the difference is just not that big, to me. I'll get a time for that same process on the laptop tomorrow.

Photoshop is extremely IO limited these days. A fast CPU helps for some actions, but if you're working with big files, it's going to need to hit your ram cache first, then move on to the swap file on your hd. If you're still running the 32-bit version of CS4 (like me), photoshop is going to be limited to 2GB of ram even if you have 3 or 4GB installed. That leads to lots of swapping and overall slowness, even with the fastest CPU.
I'd move to the 64-bit version today if all my filters would work, but many of them only run on the 32-bit version, so I'm trapped for now. I hate having ram that's sitting in my machine doing nothing...

Just a little note in case anyone needs it.
My install of Win7 is the Enterprise version using a volume license key (MAK) and I'd been bugged about it not being able to activate. I went to Start and searched for activate to get the Activate windows app. When I tried to activate, it failed with a DNS error.
So I figured I'd activate it manually. I went to the command prompt and ran SLMGR -IPK <key>. After failing a couple times, I realized I needed to run the command prompt as admin, then it worked properly.
I ran SLMGR -DLI and it said my key was temporary and that I was in the grace period. This worried me. However, I went back to the Activate Windows app and it worked now that I had a key installed.
I was never prompted for a key during initial installation, so I guess using SLMGR was the only way to get it into the system for activation. I doubt this problem will happen with commercial installs of Win7.

I reloaded my laptop yesterday afternoon and i'm stilling getting things setup like i want but it was well worth it.
I previously had a pre-RC1 build, then upgraded to RC1 then upgraded to RTM. I was plagued by sluggishness in apps and accessing network resources. Not the case now.
Running like a top with a fresh install of Win7 Pro I downloaded via our action pack subscription

I'm in the process of installing Enterprise on a Dell XT2 tablet as I'm writing this. I just threw caution to the wind and didn't really research driver support. The machine is listed on Dell's site as eligible for the free Win 7 upgrade so either the drivers are already there or they will be in two weeks. We'll see how it goes.

That was all the good news. The bad news? I didn't get to play with it at all before the user called and asked for it back. Bummer too since the machine does have some multi-touch support.
You should've told him it wasn't ready and that there was some technical difficulties getting the flux capacitive touch screen to recognize under device manager and that you were gonna have to roll back the driver which had to be shipped overnight from China. That would've bought you enough time.
here's some more of the new stuff. Multi-touch is the new hottness this season, too bad Apple won't have anything to compete.
Sony's goin multi-touch too! and it looks sexy and pricing starts at $1300

Acer's 1810T Timeline thin n light is now turned into the 1820P a multi-touch tablet!

Gateway's One the all-in-one PC is also adding multi-touch capability in 20 and 23 inch versions priced nicely at $750 and $1350 respectively.

Now dell has got a few interesting things coming out. Today they announced a shitload of new designs for their laptops. The first are targeted towards women and feature a nail polish like design on them and then for the guys they teamed up with the MLB and put a bunch of team logos on them and they don't look that bad.

Dell also again teased the new Adamo XPS which they unveiled on 9/9/09 cause it's 9.99mm thin but gave no info about it. It won't launch with Win 7.
