Help with 64 bit incompatability... (Vista Premium)

so, I bought my new Dell laptop yesterday and downloaded a program I use for work. It gives me a 64 imcompatabilty error message. I call the Tech Support for this software and was told they do not support Vista. Ugh! Got the brush off and told to call Microsoft. I googled Microsoft and it seems like they want alot of $$$$$ for Tech Support.

does anyone have any suggestions or is there a telephone # for Microsoft that can help?

thanks.

What program is it?

Some programs and/or hardware devices simply do not work in 64-bit environments.

If that program is REQUIRED for you to use for work, then you're gonna have to call Dell and see what they can do to get XP for you.

Ok, so you are installing a software on your Vista 64..

Locate the setup.exe file on the cd-rom (or where ever the install files are)...
Right click, select properties.

Click on Compatibility Tab, and select it to run as Vista 32 Bit or plain XP.. click apply.. try it again.

The 32/64 bit nuisance should not be an issue any more with new processors..

Let me know if the above works, if not we'll try other things... What's the program anyway?

There is always the possibility that the program is older and has a 16-bit installer too, those do not work in 64-bit Windows OS's

try enabling comparability mode. Right click on the applications icon and choose properties and select the comparability mode. Check the box that says enable compatability mode and choose windows xp sp2 and see if that works

that was exactly what the Tech Support at MetroScan tried and no luck. Brushed me off to Microsoft. Ugh!

I just noticed on the specs that it says Microsoft Vista Home Premium Edition 64-bit with Service Pack 1 (SP1)

Does the Service Pack 1 make a difference?

Ok looking over the FAQ and installation guides, i'm almost certain that its a 16-bit installer. You need Vista 32-bit or XP to run this. Sorry

Yeah, this program seems to have some ancient roots. As in, you could run it on Windows 98, thats not a good sign when it comes to running it on Vista 64-bit.

Shitty! Like I said, call Dell and see what they can do to get you XP instead of Vista. Unless you're set on Vista.

I am always amazed at the help here. I did email him and see what he wants to fix my problem. That would be a start.

I cannot understand how MetroScan can say we do not support this and it is not our problem....

You'd be surprised how common this is. I have a computer with Vista 64 on it. It can't run a lot of the older hardware I have. The drivers simply are out of date and the companies don't give a shit.

they make more $$$ buy making you buy a new product instead of losing $$$ to take the time to develop drivers, etc for an old product.

just thought some of you might be interested in the reply I got from Microsoft. I am going to have a Computer buddy look at it and see if he can make sense of it.

I would like to apologize for the delay in responding to your support request. Please be assured that you have successfully contacted the correct support team and I will be working with you to address your concerns as quickly as possible.

From your description, I understand that when using Metroscan, it prompts the application is not compatible with 64 bit Windows Vista. If there has been any misunderstanding, please let me know.

I understand the inconvenience you have experienced. Please be assured that I will do my best to help you.

Based on the symptoms you described and the research results, this issue can be caused by third-party products. Please understand we have no direct information about how the application is developed and therefore our help to troubleshoot this issue is limited. Please note that if this issue is determined to be related to third-party software only, it will be better for you to contact its distributor for direct assistance.

I would like to explain that in 64 bit version of Windows Vista, there are two program files folders, "Programs Files(x86)" folder and "Programs Files" folder. When installing 32 bit application in Windows Vista, we can try to install it to Programs Files(x86). Some applications that are not compatible with 64 bit system will work properly.

At this point, I suggest uninstall the application and install it into "Programs Files(x86)". After that, please check whether the application will work properly.

If you have any problem when installing the application, please let me know.

run the install program and it may ask you during the process where you'd like to install the programs at. Make sure it's directed to "C:\Program Files(x86)\" and not "C:\Program Files" Someone want to explain to me why that would make a difference. I understand that 32bit are installed in x86 and 64 bit are not but why does that make a difference? It seems that it is Windows that is supposed to recognize the program is 32bit and put it in the right folder and nothing about the installer needs to be 64bit aware so that it tells windows which folder to install too.

Looks like it worked since Eggplant hasn't replied again. If so, then it's pretty retarded that the program company didn't know how to troubleshoot and AZ did.

Could not figure out where to change C:\Program Files(x86)\ on the download. Will keep trying though if I have time tonight.

Don't download it again. Re-install it. Double click the .exe file that you downloaded. Don't fly through the menus for the install. One of them will ask you where you want to download the file to. Then do what #1 Doucher says.
