I’ll see if the rumored Mac mini is announced. As much as I’d love their 14” MBP, I just don’t use my M1 Air enough to justify another laptop.

edit: guess that’s not happening.

My only complaint about M1 is that Boot Camp is no longer usable

I don't want to look through the blog sites and such so i'll just be a lazy fool and ask here

with magsafe3, are we returning back to a regular power adapter and dropping USBC charging? What about people that have USB C docks, can that still be used to charge via PD or is magsafe3 now the only charging method? It better be either/or

they said you can charge both ways. Via USBC or MagSafe.
with a 96W adapter can charge faster. 0-50% in 30 minutos.

Fucking shipping dropped fast as hell.

I ordered the 16" with the entry Max Pro with 24 cores and 64gb of ram...trading in my old 2016 15". Fucking delivery times slipped to dec 10-23. I also used the education store.

I'm guessing this processor will not be an in store offering, but I'm going to check and if so, I'll try and pick up in store sooner.

What spec 14?

mini-LED and promotion is SOOO tempting. But then again I’m more of a desktop person.

I wonder if the 8 core layout is the same as the base M1. Just more GPU cores. 14 vs 8.

Nvm. It’s different.
M1 Pro has 6 performance cores and 2 efficiency cores.
M1 is 4 performance and 4 efficiency cores.

I ordered one and canceled it. I just don't need it and the notch is ugly for a machine without FaceID

I'll wait until the base 14" MBP hits the refurb store at $300 off in a few months from all the people returning them after doing their unboxing / review YouTube videos.

The refurb store got flooded with the new M1 iMacs after something like 3-4 months.

Interesting.

The 16” comes with a 140W USB-C power adapter.

also it looks like the HDMI port is only 2.0. Specs only mention 4K 60Hz.

Looking in to the specs they showed, the M1 Max has a slightly slower memory bandwidth than the PS5
~400GB/s vs 448 on the PS5.

In terms of GPU, the 32core is similar to the PS5's 10.2 Teraflops.

For an equivalent discrete card, it's similar to the RTX 2080 (10.07 teraflops) or the Mobile RTX 3060 (10.92).

edit: @#1 STUNNA the Teraflops is similar to the Tesla Model S

I think that PS5 bandwidth is only for GPU to GDDR6 VRAM, it still has the bottleneck of going from CPU to GPU over PCIe 4.0 which is 32GB/s.

I was paying attention to it vaguely but didn't it say the 14" starts at 2k?

Debating whether its worth to go from my 18 15" MBP Pro to the new 14". definitely wanted something smaller.

The M1 Pro and arguably the M1 would be worlds better than the 8th gen Intel chips in your MBP.

so the 140W USB-C power adapter supports Power Delivery 3.1 which is up to 240W.

If I understand right, you also need a cable that supports that wattage too. EPR (extended power range)

https://www.theverge.com/2021/10/19/...party-chargers

Apple’s new 140W charger can fast charge a lot more than just your MacBook Pro

The charging brick is USB-C PD 3.1 compliant

My thoughts on the notch are that it seems to only take up space in the middle of the menu bar which is empty space, since the screen is 16:10 it shouldn't interfere with any 16:9 content either in fullscreen.

I think they'll add FaceID eventually, I wonder if the delay is a thickness issue. Obviously, it's not a horizontal real estate problem but how thick are the rest of the FaceID sensors compared to the MBP Top clamshell? The iPhone is thicker than the MBP top clamshell so it's got enough depth to fit but maybe they are waiting for thinner dot projectors or infrared sensors in order to add it to the laptop. Maybe that's why the MBP only has a 1080P camera while the iPhone has a 7MP

I've done little to no research on this so I'm probably wrong

The fact that the charger is Type c on one end and Magsafe on the other is nice, you could probably just take that cable and plug it into any USB C charger to power your laptop in a pinch

The resolutions are actually different than 16:10 (1.6)

For the 14” it’s 3024x1964 or 1.54
16” it’s 3456x2234 or 1.547

if you subtract 74 pixels from the height to cover the notch, then the resolution becomes 16:10.
14” = 3024x1890 or 1.6
16” = 3456x2160 or 1.6

my understanding in full screen mode and video, the content doesn’t extend up to where the bitch is.

Let's gooooo!!!!

As well as its use of the USB-C PD 3.1 standard, Apple also confirmed that the brick is its first gallium nitride (GaN) charger, which means it’s using the material that allows companies to build higher-powered chargers that are smaller in size than their traditional counterparts.
Gallium Nitride and Silicon Carbide are slowly replacing regular old silicon chips because they're more efficient, make devices smaller, and possibly cheaper (someday), and handle higher power. GaN is replacing silicon in low power things like phone chargers, and SiC is replacing silicon in high power devices like Teslas, it's one of the reasons their drivetrain is more efficient than antiquated silicon-based drivetrains from Legacy auto; though I follow a GaN scientist on Twitter that was saying that they think they've solved the issue that was preventing GaN being used in high voltage situations, so now it competes with SiC.

Even better

That's almost a 3:2 ratio then. The Surfaces use the 3:2 ratio and that's one of their best features.

I'd love a 3:2 monitor in portrait orientation.

I don’t know it’s been shown anywhere.

But dave2d brought up an interesting question. Is the notch a hard cut off or can you move your mouse behind it?

I hope it’s the latter, would get kind of annoying having to go around the notch trying to select something from the menu bar.

Looks like my question was answered. Not bad!

https://www.macrumors.com/2021/10/19...ter-and-notch/
The new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros both feature a notch, a first for the Mac. Given we've never had a notch on a Mac, there are some questions over how macOS handles the notch, and more specifically, how the mouse pointer does.

The predicament about how the mouse pointer handles the notch has been a question floated across Twitter and Reddit over the last 24 hours or so since the new MacBook Pro's announcement. An animation posted on Reddit portrayed two main possibilities, one in which the mouse pointer travels behind the notch, being invisible to the user. The other option showcased the mouse pointer traveling around the notch.

The new MacBook Pros will begin arriving next week, but thankfully, we don't have to wait that long to get an answer. Linda Dong, an Apple designer, has confirmed on Twitter that the macOS pointer travels behind the notch, allowing users to essentially hide the mouse pointer from view.

This behavior will come in handy, fundamentally making the notch a hiding place for the mouse pointer. This may come in good use, for example, when users want to more easily hide the mouse pointer while they watch a video.

Apple is taking steps to make the notch less of an annoyance for most customers in day-to-day use. When macOS apps are in full-screen mode, Apple adds an artificial black bar to the top of the display that hides the notch. Developers can, however, opt to allow their apps to make full use of the entire screen real estate, notch included.
