Apple: Hardware News and Discussion Thread
I took my 2016 15" MBP to the Apple store yesterday because the keyboard has been failing for a while and I had one month left to take advantage of the extended warranty. pretty suite to get a new keyboard and battery for nothing, 4 yrs after purchase
After finding out I would be without computer for 7-10 days, I immediately purchased a base model M1 Air. The keyboard is really nice, but takes much getting used to coming from the scissor one. The computer is ridiculously quick for such a cheap machine. Haven't got into trying to edit video etc yet, I only got it set up last evening. I do find myself missing the touchbar believe it or not.
Not sure if I'll keep it or return it, I had been intending to return it when my MBP is back, but....

So you are that one guy who likes the touchbar!
So he did some initial testing with the 13" MBP. Seems like it struggles with raw footage. The GPU gets maxed out.
Still amazing that the lowest end 13" MBP can even edit those.

Yea he’s testing that stuff later with the 13” MBP.
he usually tests things like Canon Cinema Raw lite, red raw, black magic raw, prores raw and a bunch of codecs from mirrorless cams.
The R5 footage is a big one because even his Mac Pro with afterburner card can’t play it back smoothly.

- Overall, performance has been excellent
- I have two monitors: One 1080 and one 4K. Drives both of them without issue
- The only time I have any performance issues is when I have too many emulated applications open at once.
- If I launch every native Apple Silicon app, everything runs great
- If I launch Word, Teams, Excel, PowerPoint, the machine gets a little choppy
- I have crashed the machine one time by having two users logged in
- One was using Word, Teams, Excel, Powerpoint, and non-AS Chrome simultaneously
- The other was uploading their entire iCloud Photo Library from the machine to the cloud
My Apple addicted wife wants a new MBP 13" because it's got this new M1 thingamabob. Most of what she does besides web surfing is Lightroom and Photoshop. She does most of that on her iMac Pro in her home office, but she wants to have a laptop so she can edit photos in the bedroom. Will the MBP 13" run the Adobe software pretty good?
Lightroom isn’t optimized yet. Uses Rosetta, but it runs faster than any Intel Mac.
photoshop has a beta that is optimized (I think)
sadly the M1 Macs will most likely run faster than the iMac Pro.

Overall, still pretty satisfied with the Mac mini, but I did run into the bluetooth issue that is floating around. I booted it the other day and none of the peripherals worked. Had to plug in the track pad to get everything else running. Total PITA

Yeah, I used to test software for a living, so I have no problem dealing with bugs like that, but it's still a bit annoying.
But if you listen to him talk, he says the M1 only comes with 1G.
Also when he runs the speedometer browser test, he used the xcode graph again.
Doesn't really take away with how fast these things are for
B&H is discounting the M1 13" MacBook Pro and MacBook Air by $100. $899 for the base Air and $1199 for the base Pro.

You can now run MacOS in AWS! They are using i7 powered mac minis. M1 coming next year, so I think it's safe to assume that next revision mini is going to have 10Gb Nic.

Apple introduces AirPods Max, the magic of AirPods in a stunning over-ear design
Alright I don't wanna shill but these look damn impressive. Really wonder how they will sound.I thought I was done buying anything audio-related for a while. Pretty much never use my QC35s unless I'm traveling. How they manage to create a seal to block out noise using textile ear cups is beyond me. Should be nice and breathable even hours later.
Curious to see how easily the ear cups are replaceable for when they inevitably get disgusting.
Agreed, that certainly raised eyebrows.
Audiophiles won't scoff at the price, but they don't take Apple seriously. The team that does AirPods tuned the APP pretty well, so I have faith in these sounding good but that remains to be seen... err, heard.
This is way more expensive than the big players in the noise-cancelling segment though. But most of them are made with plastic

Audeze are known for having really heavy headphones to the point of being memed. Looks like that list is comparing other wireless headphones, but just for reference these are $1900 and weigh 600g+
