Has there been any news of this CVT? Is it another in house design? I assume this is the first application for it.

Not sure if it will be a new CVT design for Accord, but Honda has used a CVT before. It's used in the Insight, Civic HX/Hybrid, CR-Z, Fit/Jazz/City, JDM Odyssey, Stream, etc.

From Honda Press Release about half a year ago:

3. CVT which combines at a high level the fun of driving and fuel efficiency.
・Three CVT structures for mini, compact, and mid-size vehicle classes are newly developed to be adopted for a variety of engine models. ・Reinforced belt is used to realize a structure for which a wide ratio range can be set.
・Implementation of analysis technology over the contact behavior between the belt and pulley, and a high-precision hydraulic control system allows for continual optimization of hydraulic pressure to the pulley under a variety of driving conditions, contributing to improved fuel efficiency.
・Use of an electronic oil pump to realize an idle stop system with high response contributes significantly to improved usability and fuel efficiency.
・”G-Design Shift”, a new coordinated control system for shift transmission, throttle, and hydraulic control responds quickly to driver demands and realizes an exhilarating, sporty drive with superior acceleration. ・In the mini-vehicle class a control mechanism and innovations in axle placement to reduce the engine size lengthwise, while a reduction in parts by simplifying the transmission casing structure helps realize a lightweight and compact body.
・For the compact and mid-size classes, in addition to the reductions in size and weight, transmission efficiency was greatly improved by expanding the ratio range to achieve fuel efficiency improvements of 5% and 10% compared to the conventional CVT and comparable 5ATs, respectively.

Here's a short impression of the CVT (http://life.nationalpost.com/2011/12...to-the-test/):

The bigger surprise was found in Honda’s intention to shift from traditional automatics toward a range of continuously variable transmissions (CVTs). While I’m not a CVT fan, Honda’s design has two key features going for it. First, unlike most, launch is crisp because the engine’s torque is not reduced to prevent the CVT’s belt from slipping. This brings a significantly stronger tip-in response. More importantly, the shift logic is stepped (as in pre-programmed gears), which means it does not have that really annoying motorboating drone under hard acceleration.

I think it's a in-house design.

CVT NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!

Those things are dreadful. It not fun when they start slipping either.
It took Honda forever to move to a 6AT

Don't really see much wrong with the design, other than the excess bling. The old Accord Coupe looked good enough for Mercedes to copy it.

Hes actually not the only person to say that. IIRC Srika mentioned it awhile ago. And I agree.

The roof line, windows, and especially the crease down the side are reminiscent of the Accord Coupe.

Not good news when you compete against the E92 and A5. The sedan version is much nicer than the coupe.

It's weird how little has changed in 10 years. The prices and performance are about the same today as back then.

^ Heavier and more powerful now.

Don't worry in about 10-15 years you'll see a Civic SI w/Nav (non-Mugen) going for close to 30k.

Unless they plan on making the Civic bigger, the Accord needs to shrink a lot, or Honda at least should come out with a bridge model IMO.

Hard to tell if it's smaller or not. The rear of the roof seems to go further back into the trunk area, making trunk look shorter?

They really need to do something about the wheel gap. Even the current model looks decent with rims that aren't donuts.

Nothing like saving money by going into the parts bin.

Honda wants to have just one Accord platform world wide and they may have done it this time. So everything from a lowly LX USDM Accord to the Euro Accord to the TLX (combining the TL and TSX) could ride on the same platform. Same thing with the ED drivetrains. Downsizing the USDM Accord and TLX (so it's between the ILX and RLX) and upsizing the Euro Accord a bit would get them there.

They used 2G TL-S wheels on the 06-07 Accord 6MTs.

Those are test mules for the 2G SH-AWD system with electric motors driving rear wheels.

It's amazing what a pair of slightly upgraded wheels can do for an OEM appearance, though.

Actually, they were ever so slightly different. I think one was 0.5" wider than the other, but I know for a fact they weren't the exact same.

I'd see no problem with it, seemed to work well enough.

That's not a bad evolution from the 8G sedan. (From the A to the C pillar, it's nearly identical in form to the 8G.) I'm eager see how it will really look once it debuts.

That said, like every Accord EVER produced it will a) sell very well and b) earn its way as the benchmark for the segment. Hopefully, the dashboard will return to the simple (read: less busy) style of the 7G rather than the button overkill of the 8G.

You're thinking of the 01-02 CL-S wheels, which are 17x7. The 2G TL-S wheels are 17x6.5 and share the same part number as the 7.5G AV6.

Post Spied

Last week we showed you spy photos of the next-generation 2013 Honda Accord, caught out in the wild, but heavily camouflaged from the windows down. That left us speculating as to what exactly Honda had in store for its new Accord sedan.

We may have caught a glimpse over the weekend near Honda’s Torrance, California, headquarters. Doing some late-night testing, this gold-painted and lightly camouflaged Honda sedan sports a couple of things we couldn’t see last week. 1st, the nose appears radically different here, and much more similar to the Honda Concept C shown earlier this year at the Beijing Auto Show. It also goes against our impression of last week’s photo, which didn’t appear to have any of the “jowls” of the Accord Coupe Concept or the Crosstour Concept, both of which were shown at U.S. auto shows earlier this year.

So what gives? 2 possible explanations. 1st, the car shown here is clearly a plug-in prototype, judging from the extra “fuel” door on the front left fender. So it’s possible that Honda will be giving its plug-in model more radical styling than the standard gasoline-powered models, similar to how competitor Hyundai saved its cooler styling for the Sonata Hybrid. The other explanation is that Honda simply had an older-style nose on the car from last week, in an effort to throw off spy photographers.

Either way, we’ll get a closer look at the 2013 Honda Accord in a few months when the car is officially revealed for the 1st time.
