Wink Spiders

The web of mystery continues — Mazda is no longer the only automaker with a spider problem.

The same yellow sac spider that sparked a recall of 65,000 Mazda6 sedans also likes to nest in Honda Accords.

Honda Motor Co. hasn't announced a recall but has notified its dealers to be on the lookout for the spider. The company has issued what is known as a technical service bulletin telling Honda mechanics how to fix the problem.

"It was the same scenario and the same breed of spider. It would get in there and create a blockage that would create problems," said Chris Martin, a Honda spokesman.

Honda doesn't have a record of how many times it has spotted the problem but said it was big enough to put out the alert. Otherwise, mechanics could be spending many hours searching for the source of the problem, and that would run up the bill for Honda if the cars were still under warranty, or for the owners after the warranty expired.

Martin said Honda believes the spider, whose Latin name is Cheiracanthium inclusum, is crawling into the system through the fuel tank door on the outside of the car. The doors fit snugly but are not airtight, to avoid trapping water and debris, he said.

From there the bug probably is crawling down the vent hole, where there is a hidden, snug space, he said.

"It seems pretty random, and we don't have data on regions," Martin said.

Among Hondas, the spider problem shows up the most often in 2008 and 2009 model-year Accords. Mazda Motor Corp. is finding the spiders in Mazda6 cars from the 2009 and 2010 model years.

Mazda said spiders nesting in tiny rubber hoses linked to fuel tank systems could cause pressurization and ventilation problems in certain cars. That could lead to fuel leaks or even fires, though there are no reports of such incidents.

The yellow sac spider is indigenous to all but the most northern states in the U.S. and accounts for a large percentage of spider bites in America. For most people, the bites lead to about the same irritation as a mosquito bite, although in some cases they cause a more severe reaction.

Okay now I don't feel so bad about spiders liking my 6.

These little arachnids are sure causing a fuss. Now if we could only get them to piss gasoline...hmmm...

True, IIRC there was only one pic in the link. Could've easily been photoshopped.

Looks better than the Murano CrossDresserCabriolet thing though...

For some reason, it wasn't surprising at all. Introducing the Crosstour wasn't a bad idea, however introducing it with that styling was.... it wouldn't have been a huge stretch for them to bring out something ridiculous looking like a Crosstour convertible

Speaking of which, I don't think Honda/Acura has a single convertible in it's lineup now.

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/mone...and-china.html

Honda Motor Co. will recall more than 2 million vehicles in the U.S. and China to update the automatic transmission software in several popular models.

The 1.5 million American cars affected include 4-cylinder Accords from model years 2005 through 2010. The Accord was by far Honda’s best-selling vehicle last month, followed by the Civic.

CR-Vs from 2007 through 2010 and Elements from 2005 through 2008 were also affected by the recall.

Shifting between the reverse, neutral and drive positions -– a common sequence when trying to dislodge a vehicle trapped in mud or snow –- can damage a bearing in the automatic transmission system, the automaker said.

The problem could cause the engine to stall or make the parking gear difficult to engage. Honda said it knows of no injuries or deaths related to the issue.

The automaker said it will begin notifying owners starting Aug. 31. Last month, nearly all of Honda’s U.S.-sold models saw a year-to-year sales slump.

Honda will also recall 760,515 Accords, Odysseys and Spirior cars in China, according to a statement on its Chinese website.

Latent issues of the 5AT? Replacing a bearing in an AT can't be cheap.

^^ No bearing replacement, just software update that limits engine speed while shifting between "gears".

...and what if the bearing is already damaged? This thing sounds like driver abuse though - if you choose to rock the car back and forth like that you can expect to damage the tranny. Honda is trying to save the stupid people from themselves? That seldom works.

In snowy climates some times its unavoidable. I have never damaged a trans from doing this. I think it just comes down to the still ever so poorly designed 5at they built.

Is this just 4 cylinder models or does it include the v6?

My sister in law got a notice about a month ago about a tranny software reflash, but that was due to harsh shifting from second to third IIRC.

Joe LoCicero (luh-SISS'-er-oh) was given a 2012 Honda Accord at a parade in the city of Saco on Sunday after surpassing the million-mile mark on the odometer of his 1990 Accord. He reached the milestone last Thursday.

LoCicero says he bought the car in 1996 with 74,000 miles. The former mechanic did much of his own work. The secret he says is following maintenance schedules, using quality parts and driving safely.

He swears the transmission and engine are original.

Now that he has a new Accord, he's not sure what he'll do with the old 1.

Supercharged Accord Coupe

Honda showed off a gaggle of wild concepts for SEMA 2011, but the most interesting of the bunch may very well be a demure 2011 Accord Coupe V6. The two-door has been worked over by the go-fast fiends at Honda Factory Performance and boasts a range of bolt-on goodies that include a HFP suspension and body kit. More importantly, the Accord Coupe V6 Concept is laden with a smattering of prototype engine components. Engineers crafted a prototype supercharger, intake and exhaust systems just for the vehicle, and the end result is a very respectable 335 horsepower 285 pound-feet of torque.

Those figures mark an increase of 64 ponies and 34 lb-ft of twist over the stock 3.5-liter V6, which should do plenty to make the Accord a more interesting piece of metal. Right now, Honda says that the concept was built purely to gauge public interest and determine whether or not Accord Coupe buyers would actually be interested in a hotter version of the vehicle. We say extra horsepower is always a good thing, especially when it comes with a factory warranty.
