Honda: Accord News

Honda's barely catching up to the others (i.e. Hyundai, Kia) engine- and transmission-wise, but they've been left behind again by Ford's Fusion.
I hate to say it, but Ford's got the lead on this segment now.
I'm afraid Honda's going to continue to lose sales to Hyundai, Kia, Ford, and Nissan.
Sorry, Honda, but this is not a strong showing...

The Accord's U.S. sales decline last year, to 235,625, stemmed largely from supply shortages following Japan's March 11 earthquake.
That dropped it to 4th place in the segment, behind the Camry, Fusion and Altima. The Camry held onto its No. 1 spot despite dropping 6% to 308,510 units, also because of supply shortages after the earthquake.
Honda needs a strong showing from the Accord after its redesigned Civic small car received a chilly reception last year for what critics said was a cheap-looking interior.

I don't even want radical.
I want something that at least showed that they tried to do a new design.
How is this car that looks almost exactly like the current car going to get me to come into the dealership to purchase?
A 4 cyl DI engine?!?!? Seriously?!?! That's the draw? Direct Injection is supposed to bring in the masses?
CVT? That alone makes most buyers head for the hills.
Sure I've been wanting Honda to get with 5 years ago and build DI engines, but why are you putting them in essentially the same vehicle design?!?!
It's baffling.

Either way, sales figures will show us what kind of turn this will take for honda... still curious to see how they rework the civic

I kinda of like it. But, I like most of the current coupe (the hood line where it meets the bumper is a turn off for me)

lol...it is true what everyone was saying about the coupe though.

So when this concept gets the typical Honda vanilla treatment for production it will end up looking just like the current vehicle.

The more I see the new car designs, the more I like and plan on keeping my 3G TL. I actually like the current Accord coupe. I think the 2013 looks too overdone (an attempt to incorporate too many features of other cars into this one, and the end result isn't pretty)

The silver lining: you can go get an 8g coupe and still feel that its fairly new for the next 4-5 years. ![Thumbs Up](https://acurazine.com/forums/images/smilies/thumbsup.gif)
Heck, you know some daring soul will actually buy and 8g, and make it into a 9g on the outside. No stopping a man with little regard for his money and an excessive amount of time and bondo....

Wow....well then it is true, this is the Civic debacle part deux.
Either Honda has not learned from their mistakes....or the ship was too far gone to fast to turn from the iceburg.....ie this was already in the pipe for years.
What a mess either way.

dom, how much is Honda paying you?
There is no way imaginable that you can be positive about this concept Accord.
Sure a DI engine is interesting, and 6AT....these were a long long long time coming,...then mix in CVT for![ugh](https://acurazine.com/forums/images/smilies/ugh.gif)
...and the icing on the cake: mix in a retread design.
Seriously dom, how much, and how can I get in on that $$$$.
I can be bought too to become a Honda propaganda machine!!!
PM me the details. Thx.

![rofl](https://acurazine.com/forums/images/smilies/rofl.gif)
I hear what Dom is saying and I can see the coupe for itself and agree on that part too. I can agree that is pretty bad to so blatantly issue the same car design. Imagine if Dodge or GM had so blatantly re-issued a car like that. The fallout would be huge.
...of course, this speaks nothing of how well the new engines will turn out, the g-shift CVT, and if any of the weight savings Honda speaks of is underneath the skin of this coupe. Doubt the coupe has anything new, but I think the sedan will be pretty interesting.
But I'm with Dom...there are positives to glean. The sedan is something to look forward to, and it'll be interesting to read how each of these vehicles drives.
And yes, I do believe its possible to have a foot in both camps. Skeptical and optimistic. I do love reading the overreactions on both sides.

I dunno. Not to rehash what Dom already bulletpointed, but I've read a re-engineered v6, a philosophy towards lighter weight, a smaller footprint, and a 6mt coupled with said v6.
But as we all know, it may be of the suck...and I'll be just as critical as you can be.
To be honest, I don't feel like arguing what you can argue ad nauseum with the known fanbois around here. Its more fun to spectate. The sedan may be good, it may not be good, its all fair game at this point. I'm on the fence, but I think its alright to say that what's over the fence may deserve a good look.

Obviously not ever FMC has to be revolutionary... but considering how impressive some of the competition is in this segment these days, this is a boring evolution of the current Accord Coupe. In the looks department, it's a bit more aggressive, but I'm not sold on the F/R port-holes -- I think I would need to see them in person to make a judgement call.
On the tech side, it's nice to see they've at least caught up and aren't 5 years behind on things like 6-sp AT and the DI engine. Yet I'm really confused by the CVT.
Honda needed a home run based on the competition. That simply did not happen.

So the sedan will go from being a Noah's Ark class vessel to more of a Panamax variety... at least there's a bit of good news for us. Obviously we can't say what the new sedan will look like, but while the coupe was at least able to scrape by with an evolutionary design change, the sedan better be completely different. The current sedan is grotesque.
#2708
Not saying the 9G is bad (except for the front and rear bumpers though they will very likely change from the actual version sold), but was hoping for a newer/different design.

I get that it looks a lot like the previous gen. But its still a good looking car IMO, and that's all that people will care about.
What has me worried at this point is Honda's tendency to dumb down the production versions and whether the sedan will look good. Lets hope they don't pull an 8th gen and uglify the sedan in comparison to the coupe.
#2713
something tells me that's exactly what will happen.
#2714
You can almost see it in the intro of the new Acuras. like they poured all of their time and energy into the design of NSX, then the ILX and then ran out of steam - the RDX got some vanilla styling treatment, which left no time for the Accord.

Aesthetically, it looks like Honda had some aftermarket work done on the Accord Coupe concept that debuted back in 2007.
Anywhoooo, the jury's out on whether I take this motor over the K24Z3 in my 12 Accord:
...though I wouldnt mind the 15 lb-ft bump in torque. BTW, CVT FTL!!
Anywhoooo, the jury's out on whether I take this motor over the K24Z3 in my 12 Accord:
The Accord Sedan and Accord Coupe will be the first models in the U.S. to receive the new Earth Dreams 2.4-liter, 16-valve DOHC i-VTEC® 4-cylinder engine featuring direct- injection (DI). The engine will be paired to a new Continuous Variable Transmission (CVT), which utilizes an innovative ‘G-Design Shift’ cooperative control system for excellent acceleration and responsive shifting. The all-new 2.4-liter DI engine generates significant performance improvements compared to the 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine it replaces, producing more than 181 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque. In addition to an overall improvement in fuel economy compared to the 2012 model, the new four-cylinder-equipped 2013 Accord models are targeted to deliver class-leading fuel economy1.

Supposedly this new CVT design eliminates many of the disadvantages (such as lag) and gives it much better feel.

I think they did the right things with the RDX overall. Based purely upon keen personal observation, most RDX's seem to be driven by empty nesters. The few I've spoken to complained about the stiff ride, poor fuel economy and too much plastic in the interior but were otherwise very happy with their purchase. Not sure how the styling changes will appeal to the demographic.
