Apple: iPhone News and Discussion Thread

My HP All-in-one is going out on me and I need a new printer, so i'm looking into getting a new HP all-in-one that supports eprint so that's my fix, but still, sux that this is the only way. Although I thought you can enable print sharing using a printer hooked up to a desktop and print to that, but having to leave your computer on just to print from your mobile device is :ghey:
Steve Jobs on AirPrint: 'Lots More Coming Soon'

Many users of Apple's iOS devices were disappointed when Apple significantly scaled back the initial implementation of its AirPrint wireless, driverless printing service in iOS 4.2, limiting compatibility to direct printing to a handful of compatible printer models. With the reasons behind the scaling back remaining unclear and ranging from technical problems to patent issues, users have wondered whether Apple still has plans to allow for AirPrint functionality for other printer configurations such as printers shared through Macs and PCs as the feature had initially supported.
One MacRumors forum member emailed Steve Jobs about the future of AirPrint and reportedly received reassurance from the Apple CEO that the company will be expanding the feature "soon". Jobs also noted the difficulty in deploying driverless printing, hinting at a need for patience as the company continues to push forward.
Q: You got me all hyped up about AirPrint. Now with iOS 4.2 released, I find out that I can only print on 11 select printers. Seriously?!
A: Lots more coming soon. It's what it takes to make a giant leap to driverless printing, which is huge.
Apple has detailed the AirPrint feature and listed the 11 HP printers currently compatible with the service on an iPad feature page.

Sux.....why I upgraded the OS is beyond me.
...and yea, I don't want to leave my computer(s) running just to print.....it's why I have a network printer

Air print seems all show and no go.
My HP network printer is only at most a couple of years old. I thought for sure air print would work for it......NOPE!

So I ordered a new HP ePrint capable printer from bhphotovideo to replace my old all-in-one that is going out. Got it for a damn good deal if you ask me ($284, no tax, free shipping). I'll try it out with my work issued iPad to see how well the AirPrint feature works.
Here a link to the printer I got:

Ok I'm addicted to card games. I've been playing WSOP forever. Then I downloaded a Gin Rummy game that I'm hooked on. I d/led a blackjack game but it's limited and kind of boring. I already have solitaire. Any others?

I just don't want/need another printer when the one I got is working fine.
If UPS doesn't fuxor the shipment, I should have it on Friday.
I totally am with you on that. I wasn't going to buy a new printer just to get AirPrint to work, but since my current printer was already on its way out, figured may as well try something that was AirPrint capable.

I understand the hack will get it to work on a desktop machine, but if what you're referring to is using your desktop to enable Airprint thereby your iOS device uses the shared printer on the computer I'll pass. I don't want to have to keep my desktop machine running just to print from my iOS device.
I have AirPrint working on a few non compatible laser jets printers I have in the office. Just followed the instructions on link below. Worked like a charm when testing.

^^ I seldom print anything at all at home, but it's nice to be able to print from an iOS device if you needed to.....not to mention we all thought at one time air print would/could work for quite a bit of networked printers.....not just 11 or 12.
I don't print from my devices much either but that's because I couldn't at all.
I use DropBox on my iPhone a lot (if you haven't heard of it, lemme know and I'll send you a referral link, you and I will get more storage space if you use the referral link). If I could print from that App to my printer, then I wouldn't need to boot up my desktop or notebook just to print a document.
Or if my friend or co-worker sends a document to me via email and if I could print from there that would be helpful too.
I've realized, for myself, that until I start/try using all these extra features I don't realize how helpful they really can or can't be.

You've been missing out bud.
I'm up to 4.5GB of storage space. I know it doesn't sound like much, but hey, it's free.
They let you earn an additional 8GB from referring people giving you a max of 10GB that you can attain for your free account.

Most people don't have networked printers at least at home which is where iPads and iPhones are used mostly. So I don't think it's a big deal that the PC/Mac has to be on to print, if the printer is connected directly to the PC/Mac then it has to be on anyways.
You could always install iTunes on the work server to enable iOS printing at all times for the entire office.
Maybe someday Apple will make a separate utility that only enables AirPrinting so that you don't have to install iTunes.
Not yet i don't think. The only supported printers right now are the HP ones. the AirPrint hack requires a PC or Mac, I think apple will have to update their router in order to support AirPrint
didn't know that you couldn't share videos you filmed on the iPhone 4 over airplay.
Steve Jobs: AirPlay Video Streaming Coming to Safari and Third-Party Apps in 2011
Tuesday November 30, 2010 12:31 PM
One of the major new features deployed in iOS 4.2 last week was AirPlay, Apple's solution for streaming video, audio, and photos from portable iOS devices to the new Apple TV for display on users' televisions. Unfortunately, the feature's debut came with a few more limitations than users had originally hoped for, with streaming from third-party applications and even Safari limited to audio-only.
While some hackers have been able to discover how Apple has coded the restrictions on video streaming and ways to work around it in a proof-of-concept implementation, mainstream users would obviously prefer Apple to offer full-fledged support for the feature on third-party apps through a public API developers could use for their apps.
One MacRumors reader emailed Apple CEO Steve Jobs about the future of video streaming via AirPlay and reportedly received a response noting that Apple hopes to bring additional functionality to AirPlay sometime next year.
Q: Hi, I recently updated both my iPhone 4 and iPad to 4.2. I think my favourite feature is airplay. This is seriously amazing and makes sharing content seamless. I just purchased Apple TV and was wondering are you ever going to make airplay video work for videos in safari and 3rd party apps? I hope to get a response.
A: Yep, hope to add these features to Airplay in 2011.
The AirPlay functionality appears to have a few other quirks as well, as noted by Daring Fireball's John Gruber. One such quirk involves the fact that the iPhone 4 is unable to stream via AirPlay video shot directly on the iPhone.
The most obvious shortcoming: You can't use AirPlay to play videos shot on your iPhone. That's an obvious feature, right? Shoot a video on your iPhone, then play it back for family and friends on your big TV via AirPlay. No syncing, no docking, no moving files around. Just hit play. But it doesn't work in iOS 4.2.1 - even though you can use AirPlay to show still photos from the Photos app.
While some had theorized that the issue was related to bandwidth required to stream the high-definition footage shot on the iPhone 4, video footage shot on the device and then synced to iTunes and back to the device will stream via AirPlay. Gruber theorizes that Apple had to roll out incomplete AirPlay functionality in order to meet its goal of releasing iOS 4.2 by the end of November and that we will see increased functionality coming in the future, as Jobs' purported email suggests.

I'm thinking of getting my first iPhone. I know the specs and read it. 3GS looks good in terms of price. But newer is always the fashion. Some would also say newer is better. What will I use the phone for? Everything an iPhone will do (except Facetime) - games, web, music, photo, movies. If I make a list, and check the boxes, I don't see what more the iPhone 4 will do (for me). The only advantage for the 4 is that it's newer.
If you had to start over today, would you get a 3GS? Or 4 only?
It will be a 2 year commitment.

Welcome to the board!
To save money, get the 3GS under contract, wait a year, if that's how long it takes for AT&T to allow you to upgrade, and pay for the upgrade to the next gen iPhone which will probably come out in June/2011. If you buy the iPhone4 now, and upgrade a year from now to the next gen iPhone, you're wasting some money.

you upgrading from a 3g? or a dumbphone? My 3g seems awful slow compared to my brothers 4g. I'm eligible to upgrade but figure I'll grind it out until Iphone 5 in july.
Dumbphone. I was looking long and hard at used to avoid the data but prices are crazy. Went with a data family plan, wife got a free Blackberry.

I'm also hoping that my 3G will last till June, but I have a filling I'll give out before then and want to upgrade.
FYI, you can sell your iPhone to gazelle.com. They buy back many different kinds of devices. I'm hoping to sell mine when it comes time to them, it's not the best pricing, but it sure beats having to deal with crap on eBay.

Thanks.
So there is already word on an iPhone 5? Wow, that was quick.
This may sound silly, but how do we know there isn't another iPhone coming out in Jan 2012, 6 months later? I guess this is an example of chasing technology?

As I found out (the hard way) buying used only makes sense if you are unlocking it to be used with a different carrier.
When your phone arrives, go tot the app store and search for "NHL gamecenter". Very good app for the puck heads. Even if their team is teh suxor
