Apple: Hardware News and Discussion Thread
I don't think she would. She doesnt use it and wont notice that its a bit thinner, she may though, plus it has a few keys the old one didnt. Im going to tell her and just say that the two laptops I sold paid for this one, which is pretty close to true.
The more I think about it....the more I think I realize the internals of the 15 are what I will need for long term use...
Its annoying as shit...I REALLY want the 13 form factor.
Still have to take a SD to an apple store and play more...but Im in no rush, not a financial investment I'm in the position to make right now...especially if I have to go 15....fuck that bums me out.

Ehhh it's a big mess my quote, but I'll be going with a 15" whenever I get the coin, as much as I want the 13" size
Played with both the 13 and the 15, the high end 13 cost the same as the mid 15 and is not even close to the 15's performance. Even the Apple sales guy said the high end 13 is a hard sell. If the 13 was thinner and lighter by a lot, then maybe, otherwise the 15 is the way.

no 15 retinas on the refurb page either
I'm supposed to get my 13" rMBP today... It'll replace my current late-2010 MBA. Should be a nice upgrade for photo editing and development. I went with the i7 because why the fuck not.
The 15" is undoubtedly the better machine for the price, but the 15" form factor just doesn't work for me.

I took an SD card to the apple store yesterday and spent some time on both machines, 13 and 15.
The 13 had aperture, so I loaded one of my 80mb RAW files....it worked flawless and smooth. No hiccups or issues.
BUUUUT the apple store doesnt allow for the adobe suite or final cut pro to be loaded on the 13" machines in store...only on the 15s. So again its hard to say whether the 13 can run them fine or not, for my uses of the applications.
THe guy at the apple store said...buy the 13 and load up all the software and use it like hell for up to 14 days...if it doesnt perform to my hopes, return it.
Might try that....though my brain keeps saying the 15 is the smarter more usuable route even though I really dont want the larger size.

I spent a couple hours at my friends house this afternoon putting his new 15" rMBP through the paces.
After having it hooked to a TV as a 2nd monitor and running final cut pro and doing on the fly rendering....
Im just going to have to look past the added size I dont want...that thing is just a powerhorse...and he just had the 2.3Ghz model.

The biggest issue present right now is that adobe lightroom (my workhorse app) is not yet compatible with the retina display. And it kinda makes editing photos pointless if I'm looking at blocky images.
Unless jupie can weigh in on this.
OH and this review I read this morning put the nail in my decision:

Exactly. I noticed it. My 15 inch rMBP never gets hot, rarely gets even warm thanks to a dedicated graphics chip.
My new Mac Mini does get hot, so did my 2011 13" MBP. The fans would kick in quickly if you even watched a brief Youtube video.

I have rarely had heat issues with my current 13"
The only times the fans come on is when I was doing a mass import of photos while using two bus powered externals.
And diablo 3.
My 2007 iMac....that used to be a beast...now the fans kick on all the time. It just sits turned off...I never use it anymore.

Intel HD3000?
FWIW I am really liking the 13" rMBP. It's actually a little smaller (albeit not thinner) than my 13" MBA. At its thickest, the MBA seems the same thickness as the MBP.
The performance is as expected; however, I am not all too happy with Mountain Lion. I guess I still haven't gotten used to the gestures and changes on how it handles different spaces/desktops.
Another thing I don't like is how Firefox looks like shit. I don't like using Safari but I guess I'll have to put up with it for a while since I don't like Chrome.

The retina on it is amazing, looking at any other screen after this looks like shit, I am now a retina snob
. For now, I got Fusion running with Windows 8 booting my bootcamp partition, works pretty well. Windows 8 is not in retina but looks good in Fusion and performance is fine. The 16GB ram would have been nice, but not needed. This is a good site for nice retina apps - http://retinamacapps.com/ Playing with some now.

Turns out if you disable hardware acceleration (in the firefox advanced preferences section) Firefox looks great on the Retina screen.
