Android: Phone News and Discussion Thread
Anyone else noticed that their G+ Photos app is now called Photos and has a new logo?

They put all that auto awesome and highlights and video thingymajig all in there now.
For those of you lucky people getting receiving your Nexus 5 today, can you do us all a favor and take pics and/or vids of anything about it and then use your Nexus 5 to make it into an Auto Awesome Video for us all to watch?
I'm very intrigued by it and could do it on my N4, but I haven't backed up all my photos and vids to G+ yet mainly because I'm lazy but also because I have too many to leave my phone idle for that long of a time.
Probably cause it has his mum and girlfriend in it? And you know how the internet gets with female pictures/video online.
Here is Google's promo vid for it though:
Word in the tubes is that Google will be rolling out a future update to the Nexus 5 mainly for its camera software optimization.

Any ways, I think I want to convince my wife into switching out for GS3 for the N5 I got her. She's been feeling the slowness of the bloatware on her GS3 and I think she would like the LTE upgrade since her GS3 doesn't have the LTE band.
Btw, did you guys know the Nexus 5 has a step detector/step counter?! What the heck? Nice!
Waaaa maybe I should head home for lunch and check! But naah. If I did that I won't focus on work AT ALL. Haha.

Makes fitness apps more accurate instead of relying on the accelerometer which you can cheat by just doing the shake weight motion with your phone. While the OK Google is going to be mostly a novelty and party trick, I think that would fascinate her enough to switch. Also, the nicer feeling back, bigger and better screen within the same sized phone, and LTE. I mean, I would totally not convince her so that I can get that Nexus 5 from you, but you know...
And here's a video of the bumper case if anyone is interested:
As for the N5 camera, just like every camera equipment out there, how the pictures turn out mostly depends on the person taking the picture too. I've seen comparisons with the Note 3, S4, and HTC One and the N5 is not as terrible as The Verge makes it out to be. The stock camera app though is still questionable.
p.s. I hate how people are using a new product for less than 2 days and then making a review about it. WTF?! I despise how websites need for clicks/profit counters the need to produce an actual review.

After 3 straight Google phones, I am now considering other phones. I'm eyeing the Note 3, possibly the S4, and Xperia Z (the waterproof one, I get confused between the Sony phones).
I don't mind the cheaper built of the Samsung phones that everyone frown on, I just prefer having removable back/battery swap, and ability to increase storage

If going Samsung, Note 3 > S4 if you can stand the size. Every Xperia with a "Z" in it except the ZL is waterproof.
This is a good read for anyone thinking about going into the prepaid wireless option for their Nexus 5 or any other future off contract phones.

At the same time, up here in Canada, I'm currently on Mobilicity, and I hadn't been following, but it looks like Mobilicity is doing pretty bad... I only looked into it last week when their customer service pissed me off... Their C/S hours has been cut back, and one day I called @4:50pm and got a message saying to call back during business hours which is until 5pm
Who does that? Clocking out or close up shop early ONLY happens with mom and pop's operations. So, anyways, Now I'm looking into Wind... I'm NOT going to go with one of the big 3 because the charge too much for my needs especially unlmitited calling the States and data (even if it's NOT LTE). Wind is mainly non-contract, BUT they DO offer discounted phones with contractsbut I'm also partially talking out of my ass, I'll just wait until the Kit Kat update and see if this will "Wow!" me... I'll still most likely go over to Wind, but just non-contract plan (and use my N4)
i'm gonna insert my sim card tonight, and look over the bills.
if I use less than 100 minutes of call time, I'm doing the 100 mintues talk and unlimited everything for 30 bux a month.
if on the bill, i go over or use up too 100 minutes, i'll probably pick the 60 dollar plan

For those of you with new Nexus 5 today, grab this handy Nexus 5 guide from the Google Play Books store for free:

Photo samples from a Nexus 5 (and some comparisons with a Galaxy S4 too). Results are surprising.

So my friend was excited as shit when I called him to pick up his N5. I made sure to buy a screen protector and Spigen case and had it expedited to deliver today. He was so excited that I decided to sell him my case so that he doesn't damage his N5. This is the guy that lost one of his phone and broke his N4 so he needed it more than I did.
I haven't even unboxed my phone. Just bought another Spigen case for myself cause I refuse to hold this phone without a case.

Your personal (naked?) videos with Simon do not count!
Google's Helpouts is kinda fantastic.
