Android: Phone News and Discussion Thread
On the bright side, now you can patiently wait for the S4 or whatever new phones that come out this year :/
...or order replacement parts and fix it DIY style.

Here's a good vid about replacing the screen:
So...... The Xperia Z takes just 68 seconds to take 999 pictures with Burst Mode...
Even more reason that it sucks USA won't be getting it.
Also, Taiwanese are crazy:

if its $300 i'm not gonna even bother changing it. I was thinking more along the line of like $50 haha
I may just let it be and use it till summer where hopefully i land an internship and just use that money to buy a new phone.

If the touch screen still works, thats great news. The digitizer and screen itself are expensive as fuck. But you can get replacement glass on ebay for less than $30.

civic the touch response works perfectly. Even over the heavily cracked areas.
In that case if its that cheap i can just replace it myself... i think. I'll look into it a ltl later after some studying
swoosh, sg3 comes with 1800mah stock i believe.

ok so i didnt study and did a quick research. It seems that Samsung GS3 has the screen glued to the LCD or digitizer or whatever and most people say unless you are very very good, getting it to work properly by just replacing the screen is really hard. The touch responses may be a ltl off. And i think its a hard DIY as it requires heat gun to pull it apart and i'm guessing gluing it back together. Looking on ebay I should be able to get at least $150 on this phone...
So I think I'm just keeping it till i get some job at some point in my life. Buy the next nexus phone thats out and just use that.

yea in the video she says you can buy it with the digitizer and all or just the glass. But she says for her its not worth it just replacing the glass because its hard to do, and she'd rather fork up the money.

Ya know... that damage you posted isn't that bad. Sure, the cracks are far reaching, but the concentrated area is so small that you could just slap on a super cheap screen protector to stop the glass from shattering more and unto your hand, and still be able to use it decently until you have saved up money for a new one/upgrade.
Does suck that it looks like your phone just hit one small point on your leg frame thing and rippled across.

hey you know you make a good point about putting a screen protector on so i dont feel it.
Yea I mean i can live with this for some time, but no way am i living with this for 2 years... its more annoying than anything. So which company has the best screen protector haha. I never know since i've never bought one.
heres a better pic

thats on new contract though... and apparently our family plan doesnt allow us to get subsidized phones....
when i went to tmobile back before i had this phone they were telling me cause we're in a plan thats cheaper and we cant get subsidized phones.... So i can get it for $200 and pay monthly installments to cover the next 2 or 300 dollars.
soo yea.... I'm waiting till i hopefully land an internship in the summer.

This is what I was told:
Tmobile is no longer "subsidizing" the phone. You pay a down payment, then pay it off at $20 for the next 20 months. Basically, they're not hiding the cost of the phone in the service contract.
The GS3 was $150 down, $20 for the next 20 months. The Nexus is cheaper. Once the 20 months pass, your bill basically drops $20. Im paying $67 a month until November of next year, then it drops to $47 a month.

Try to get a hold of a heat gun to make it easier. If not, a hairdryer can work. It'll just take some patience to evenly heat the adhesive off. As for screen protector, SGP is what I used to use but they're pretty expensive. I currently don't use one now but I did for my Galaxy S. Martin Fields I hear is another good one and they even have tempered glass protectors nowadays but that wouldn't do you any good until you replaced the screen.

As for screen protectors, I love ZAGG myself. The HD variant would be great for you.....but I don't know how much you want to spend on a screen protector. You could always get super cheap ones for under $5 if you are not keeping the phone for long.
I also love Martin Fields like CGFeb mentioned, but they are expensive and ships for Japan (crazy good quality). Plus, I don't think you would want to spend that much money to protect a broken screen. IF you go the expensive screen protector route, you might as well spend money and time to replace the broken glass.
edit: wow I just checked and it looks like Martin Fields is now cheaper because they ship from Amazon within the US. No more paying and waiting for US Customs.

Does anyone know whether the "block caller" option under Google Voice works only when the person calls your Google Voice number, or does it work when the person calls your forwarded number(s) directly too?
Only if they call your Google Voice number. You can create a contact and add numbers to it and check "Send to Voicemail" on your phone though.
lol i'm too afraid to do it...
mainly because if i DO mess up, i ruin the phone. While right now its perfectly fine other than looking bad i can ruin it that it wont work as good and to me thats a lot worse.

heres a plan
come summer if i have money. Buy a N4 or if the Google X is coming out then that. Then buy glass and attempt to fix GS3. Sell for $300 or a ltl less since the S4 will be released and it will depreciate more.

Speed, same thing happened to my phone exactly a year ago. I bought a replacement screen and did some DIY. Followed the instructions every step of the way, but it didn't work. Eventually I gave up and got the GN with an Otterbox. Haven't dropped it once yet.
Yeah the translate card thing isn't super helpful in popping up. Even worse when you switch to the local country's sim card and your phone thinks that you are actually at home and not roaming/travelling so it doesn't pop up. There are ways around this, but to be honest, just yell into your phone what you want to translate, or just launch the translate app. The conversation mode in Google Translate is a god sent...........for the languages available.
Looks like future Samsung mobile devices will have Qi wireless charging too...

WHAT THE POPE RESIGNING?!!! I just accidentally dropped my Nexus 4 from about 4 feet high.... stupid headphones pulling it off the counter!
Good thing nothing seems to have broken. Everything is fine, no scratches, no nicks. PHEW!!!
Somehow by some miracle, neither glass panels got hurt. Thank you LG production line.

any suggestions for the galaxy note?

any suggestions for the galaxy note?

it fell off my desk and hit a horizontal leg going across on the bottom... and just hit it too judging by where the crack is.
