Android: Phone News and Discussion Thread
No idea. They just feel good to touch and press. Emphasizing not made of plastic?
Some tidbits about 4.4 since everyone seems to forget that a new OS update also was announced.
Unfortunate that you cannot wake up your phone with the "OK Google" phrase like the Moto X. It only works with your screen on in the Nexus 5.
But really fantastic that 4.4 can run on phones with only 512MB of RAM. More lower end and entry level Android phones can experience the best of Android.

ANDROID'S NEW DIALER IS SMARTER BOTH WHEN SENDING AND RECEIVING CALLS
Android's new dialer is putting convenience and efficiency first: you can now search for business numbers without leaving the phone app. All it takes is going into the dialer and typing a few letters and corresponding local businesses will start appearing. And Google is applying the same formula in reverse. Your Android phone will now be much smarter when receiving calls, too.
When unrecognized calls come in, Android 4.4 instantly pings the Google Maps database for potential matches. If it finds one, the name of whatever business is calling (and an accompanying photo) will be displayed on screen instead of a random number you've never seen before. "We've made the dialer more intelligent, more manageable." The phone's contact list is also more intuitive. It learns a user's habits (who you call most, etc.) in realtime and rearranges the way your contacts are displayed based on that understanding.

Ooh love that google maps search for unknown callers. I do that already for unknown calls.
Usually end up seeing an entry in those "who called me" websites saying it was spam.

I'd say resell value is pretty good. The Nexus 4 is still selling on Craigslist in good condition for around $220 - $240 on average and they were retailing for $300 new.
Resale value? Don't know, but for the Nexus 4 if good condition before the Google $100 price drop, it was doing well. After the price drop, people would rather pay the new cheaper price for a new one. If you are going to change phones every year, the Nexus line always comes out around this time, so just sell your phone 2 months before.
That's true. I might use my upgrade on the Lumia 1020 when it becomes free. That way I won't have to worry about taking uneven pictures with my phone.
Or you could buy one now to try it out for a while. If you don't like it, just sell it to break even, or even a profit since the resale/gouging value will be high for at least 8 months.

Done with the midterm!!
First thing to address... You guys went to K1 without me!! Bitches! How'd you like to see an engineering grad student who drive a corolla right now whoop your asses
Second thing: now to take a break and get me a piece of that kitkat news

Kitkat looks def is a nice solid upgrade. I just want wallet and hangouts coming to me ASAP!!
Here's a good question for those on AT&T would you get a moto x for 100 or a n5 for $350.
Seeing the vergecast, the N5 doesnt seem to have done good with the camera, but everything else seems great!

And dude, you are almost impossible to schedule around.

The Verge guys were probably in HDR+ mode and didn't wait long enough for the phone to capture the multiple pictures and that is why it came out blurry and took so long for it to capture the pic. I know from experience that Nexus HDR is a pain in the ass to use, but when perfectly still and long enough, the picture comes out amazing.
Yeah, they really did learn their lesson from last year. Good on them.
How can there be reviews of a device that just got announced & launched today?
What about the wireless charging? It is based on the same Qi concept that has been around for a while except this time it has magnets and the charger is differently shaped. There are no reviews of the charger at this time either.
The soft touch backside gets fingerprint-tastic, and fast.

Congrats!

Honestly, I would prob go for the Moto X since they are already jumping from 4.2 to 4.4 soon and with better camera, active notifications, and wake up OK Google command. Plus, the way it just fits in your hand with that screen size.... I can't wait for the 2nd gen Moto X. But, I'd wait a few months for it to drop to $0 if I was to get the current gen.

yea ok, how about when I graduate in December haha. I'm basically swamped till then. School, work, and orgs. Gets intense at times like now haha. But hopefully it loooks good on resumes! Time management yo! Unless they see me on here all the time
Yea moto x is probably better because its basically an enhanced stock android experience. I told my friend the same thing to probably go with moto x, but since he got the order for the N5, let it ship wait for reviews and just take the time to make the decision.
Here's the apk for hangouts
http://www.androidpolice.com/2013/10...ation-sharing/
Got it all integrated
I still dunno how it is to interact with someone that has this hangouts and is in your phonebook though. Will be interesting to see how thats done, or does it just keep it separate. I dunno, I hope not.
edit: it probably only merges the sms/hangouts for those that enable sms in hangouts. At least thats my guess. Someone get it and we can test it out!

Their hands on shows some great pics by the N5 actually.

touts kitkat will be great for older slower phones...
doesnt include Galaxy nexus..

Honestly, most people already believe that the reason 4.4 is optimized for slower phones/512MB of RAM is because they will put it on wearables!
speedemon90, Dec sure. Have your party, invite us all this time and maybe even Justin will drive out with his N5

I haven't put any of the 4.4 N5 apks on my phone yet because the apks out now were stripped from the N5 image so it is not guaranteed to work 100% with any phone. ASOP 4.4 ROMs are already being released lol.
With SMS (and MMS) in Hangouts now, guess I'll have to be logged into Hangouts permanently on my phone now. Can't be invisible anymore, but you can set your mood, an indicator whether you are in a voice/video call, and which device you are logged in from (laptop, tablet, or phone).
And early reports show that SMS and Hangouts in the app are separate threads, but there is code that allows them to be in the same thread in the future - most likely March 2014 when Google Voice is integrated.

Easter egg animation
and already an unboxing video lol
another hands-on
and a video sample
Seems like they got the audio on the video camera to work a TON better than the Nexus 4.
