Android: Phone News and Discussion Thread
Shouldn't affect any devices out there. This injunction is against Samsung's Galaxy Nexus not against Google. All devices out there will get support and future updates regardless of what happens as the law isn't retroactive. This injunction, if it becomes permanent, will only affect the US because our patent system is a joke as companies take advantage of it to slow down competition. All the retailers, both online and B&M, can sell whatever stock they have left just like how it was in Germany when Apple got the Tab 10.1 banned for being a rectangle like the iPad. They can't, however, replenish their stock after they're out of the Nexus.
Also, its not yet in effect as Apple still needs to pay a $96 million bond just in case the whole thing doesn't work out which at the earliest is 7AM of Monday. (Pocket change to Apple, yes). There does seem to be a small silver lining from what I was reading in that because Apple's patent is so broad (as it usually is) it can come down to a matter of semantics if their lawyer is good enough. The argument had something to do with Apple's "heuristics" vs. predefined text to give results. Either way, the patent shouldn't have been given in the first place considering how broad it is.
I know I've said this many times but I hope the patent system gets changed. Its actually kinda nice to hear how a lot of Apple "fanboys" actually see how silly this thing is. A lot of devs are pretty pissed about the situation both Apple and Google devs. The EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation) has put up a webpage to petition to have the patent system changed. Not sure how much it'll have an effect but the internet has done some amazing things before:

Instead of creating new products to compete, Apple is trying to cripple other companies out of oblivion. Its really saddening because they're slowing down progress in the tech world.

uh, isn't that what competition is all about? Not necessarily copying but attracting consumer interest?
If this was the case there would be a ton more lawsuits in the automotive industry between manufacturers.
being a direct competitor to another product is nothing to sue over, or target specifically the Galaxy Nexus phone. (which technically to this day does not have an enhanced search..it's merely google actions that has existed well before Siri). And even then, why go against Samsung when they're just a hardware maker? They surely didnt program the new search feature.
Makes me love my Gnex even more.
Apple has a better case against the just announced Nexus 7.
Josh Krevitt, a lawyer for Cupertino, California-based Apple, told Koh that there is “loads” of evidence proving Apple is suffering direct harm from Nexus sales. In Samsung documents shared in an exchange of pretrial evidence gathering, the company shows the Nexus is “designed to take sales from the iPhone,” Krevitt said.

So apparently Google Now has an Easter Egg as well:

Lol. The whole app rolls.

Acurazine is eating the links to G+. The whole app just does a barrel roll. Tried the other stuff like let it snow and tilt. Tilt works but only the search results tilt. Let it snow doesn't work.

Android 4.0 finally on 10 percent of devices, 8.5 months in

http://www.theverge.com/2012/7/3/313...tion-july-2012
The Android Developers site is posting some new numbers showing the distribution of Android versions on devices accessing Google's Play store, and while Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich showed growth of more than 50 percent over last month’s figure, it’s still only on 10.9 percent of devices. The increase can likely be attributed to a few factors including a steady pace of ICS updates and flagship Android 4.0 releases like HTC’s One X and Samsung’s Galaxy S III.
The overall share of Android 2.3 Gingerbread devices actually fell for the first time — from 65 to 64 percent, and version 2.2 Froyo continued its decline, dropping nearly 2 percentage points over the month. The big takeaway is that it’s taken carriers and OEMs 8.5 months to get the newest version of Android on a tenth of the devices in the market. And judging from what we’ve seen, despite the early release of the Android PDK, the odds of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean faring much better aren’t very encouraging.

^Exactly the reason to buy a Nexus. What the blogs fail to mention is that ICS was such a big transition in frameworks and code which is the reason for the slow uptake. Even CyanogenMod took a while to merge all the new code and they're usually pretty quick about these things. Jelly Bean doesn't seem to be that big of a leap from ICS, code wise, so it shouldn't take as long of a process if the companies have ICS down but I guess we'll find out once the source drops in a few weeks.
Hmm...Is it just me or are the CM9 Nightly builds getting better and better? Just updated my Galaxy S to the CM9 7/23 Nightly and it feels a lot smoother than the previous builds. Its still not Jelly Bean like in smoothness but it feels noticeably different in a good way.
Holy crap, maybe I've been living under a rock, but did you guys know theres an Azine app??

As for cm9 mines been a ltl buggy after i downloaded the june 30th i believe. I may need to do a full wipe and try out one of their newer ones. Or if i just flash on top would that take out whatever was causing the lag?

Oh look some good news regarding the CDMA Nexus S 4G:
https://groups.google.com/forum/?fro...ng/u0RgVFy6y84
We've been able to resolve the issues around Nexus S 4G, and we can
now properly distribute its CDMA and WiMAX binaries. That allows Nexus
S 4G to work with AOSP just as well as Nexus S.
As a result, we now consider Nexus S 4G to be fully supported in AOSP,
with no restrictions. Overall, Nexus S is the preferred platform for
AOSP work.
I've updated the set of IMM76L binaries for Nexus S 4G to include
WiMAX support. They're available at their usual location:
https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/drivers
Enjoy!

This might make you guys not on Jelly Bean happy

Google Now on AOSP based ROMS like CM9, AOKP, etc. 2 methods, one requires a buld.prop change and the other just an install.

really! sweeeet!! I better not be disappointed when i go to the link lol
Kinda like google search evolved. They dont releases updates to everyone, its just there when they update their own system.
so looking at the instructions i have to go into the build.prop and change something but when i do this using esfile explorer it says error changes cant be saved...
edit: i can edit it in office suite but then when it comes to saving, i save it in plain text right, but then it asks me the name to save it and its gonna be build.txt can i just change the name to build.prop and it will be the same?

Also from what I understand, voice search is not working yet. Just the cards work right now. I'm sure they'll have voice up soon though with the way the XDA guys go.
This version doesn't require a build.prop change:

For the Mac apparently TextWrangler is a good Notepad++ alternative:

Here it is on my Galaxy S i9000 running 7/23 CM9:
gn60Y.png
The Background around the Google Logo changes depending on the time of day and your location. It gave me an error about not being able to activate Location History. To fix that, just log into your Latitude account then you can log out if you like. It keeps track of where you're at every now and then to figure out where your Home, Work, etc. is at to give you the proper Cards. Voice Search errors out once you try and press it. Probably missing a lib file. They're close though and regular searching works to build up those cards with your favorite teams.

Just to add, its pretty buggy. Searching seems to work sometimes. lol. If you're gonna try it, I suggest you try it before you do a full wipe just to see how it is at its current stage. Maybe they'll get it working 100% in the next few days. Just use the no build.prop mod apk by overwriting the GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk in your /system/app/ folder and don't forget to change permissions to rw-r--r--
Well I got passed it by getting root explorer, but now
I can't open the File when I download it. I downloaded it through my comp and tried to install through recovery and root. But it says couldn't parse packages and then I downloaded straight from the site on my phone and it just said couldn't open file. I'm gonna try the new link maybe that has a better dl link

It happen again. First, my Samsung Captivate power button didn't work and now my SGS 2 power button just stop working. Yeah, so, with my SGS 2 it hasn't been a year yet. Will at&t replace the phone for free?
