To me it looked like Marchand was going to play the puck underneath him, but he decides to duck at the last moment before Salo had time to brace himself. You could argue Marchand is short, but it was still a pretty low hit - Salo's ass is completely visible.

You make the call, which one's a penalty and 5 games and which ones a legal hit.

While I agree they are similar hits, Marchand looks like he was skating fairly fast at Raymond and Raymond reacted by ducking. You can even see Marchand trying to slow down as Raymond ducks. On the other hand, Salo was gliding towards the puck and was probably expecting shoulder to shoulder contact but got flipped instead. Shanahan mentions speed as a factor for his decision as well. It also doesn't change the fact that Marchand could've played the puck but opted to check Salo instead.

Did Raymond deserve a clipping penalty for the hit? Probably. Marchand's suspension was based more on intent and player history rather than the hit itself though.

The other thing is one was last year and one was this year so consistency isn't necessarily expected to be there. There's lots of plays this year that have lead to suspensions that didn't in years past.

Well I guess it takes a special team like the Caps to help motivate the Kings to score more than 1 or 2 goals. 5 goals

Speaking of the Caps, whatever happened to that player they had.....Alex Ovech...something or other?

He and that Sidney Crosby guy use to rule the League. Those were the days.....

He sucks, and is over rated, nobody misses him, oh wait is he still playing?

Saw that earlier, definitely good news

After watching 24/7 I actually came away liking the Rangers as a team, they seem like a good group of guys.

I like them because they have the heart to play. They are not as talented as other great teams, but when they unite together, they are pretty good.

Defense is bleh, Offense is bleh.. Our goalie is what keeps the team up in the standings.

P.S. I'm a fan since 92, so I guess I <3 them :ghey:

^ ahh stop it; just love the game.

If you want to hate, hate on FIOS and their lack of NY sport teams channels... I'm forced to watch Rangers in standard definition, it's torture.

I hated the flyers already, but it also made me a little more disgusted with them as well and not just as a Hockey team, now I think they are for the most part generally bad people in real life too.

Don't get me wrong, I'm still rooting for them to lose more nights than they win but the guys on the team seemed to me like genuinely nice people with Torts leading the pack.

Refs 5, Pens 1 tonite.

to recap:

m. michalek kicks the puck into the net, goal counts.
malkin gets cross checked into the net after he scores, no penalty.
no diving on the neal hit/penalty.
OTT goalie pushes the net off the moorings, nobody else even in the vicinity, no call.

Welcome to sh*tty officiating. If it makes you feel any better, officiating led to my Hawks losing to the Pink Shings on Sunday.

Yeah, Sens score 5 goals in Pit and its all bad ref'ing!!

The Spezza deke on Johnson was a thing of beauty!

Spezza broke in alone and drew the goalie all the way out of the net with a series of feints. Spezza then skated around the sprawled netminder and appeared to be heading behind the net for a wraparound attempt, only to cut back behind Johnson and clang the puck off the far post.

The one the called for Winnipeg was even worse, the guy wasn't denied a scoring opportunity Tuukka had to make a save but they gave him the penalty shot anyway. The game was filled with bad calls but it seemed like they did a good job of making more bad calls to make up for the original bad calls.

Just saying.

Still, not bad for a 7th rounder. Still, if I had to go with mighty 7th rounders, I'd take Brouwer, Pavelski, Burnette, Zetterberg, and Lundqvist...

Well, turns out the Kings & Staples Center have become one of the first NHL arenas to adopt the new “thin mesh’’ on the tops of the nets.

Supposedly the purpose, is to make things easier for the video-review crew in Toronto to accurately make calls onwhether or not the puck crossed the goal line.

...that being said since the Toronto video guys are usually:
A: asleep during west coast games
B. blind
C. biased
D. blind
E. unemployed homeless people occupying a seat
F. blind

...this "thin mesh" should have little to no effect on the outcome of Toronto's calls.

This was the other penalty shot they awarded during the game. IMO neither of them actually warranted a penalty shot, maybe not even a penalty.

Side note, it's the first time in Bruins history that a penalty shot was awarded to each team in a game.

the penalty shots have really taken off this season, they've been calling them for not even closing your hand on the puck, it's really nuts

I do have to comment that the Eastern Conference is sure interesting. Who would've thought that at this stage, the Sabres, Caps and Bolts are on the outside looking in...?

At the risk of suffering jup's wrath. The Caps are done. Stick a fork in em. Even if they make the playoffs, where they going?
