Words of wisdom from Burke

TORONTO -- Brian Burke is struggling to come to grips with the evolution of hockey.

On a day the Toronto Maple Leafs general manager sent enforcer Colton Orr to the American Hockey League, he bemoaned the fact there doesn't appear to be much need for players like him in today's game.

Long a proponent of rough and tumble hockey, Burke now presides over a Leafs team that is built largely on speed and skill. The sport in general has trended in that direction since the lockout and it's come with a few other developments Burke finds troubling.

"If you want a game where guys can cheap shot people and not face retribution, I'm not sure that's a healthy evolution," he said Thursday at an impromptu media conference. "The speed of the game, I love how the game's evolved in terms of how it's played. But you're seeing where there is no accountability, this is the byproduct -- is people running around that won't back it up."

According to numbers provided by the NHL, fighting is down significantly this season. Through play Wednesday, there was an average of 0.8 fighting majors per game compared with 1.2 at the same point last year.

"To me, it's a dangerous turn in our game," said Burke.

The Leafs found themselves in the bottom third of NHL teams in that category with just 13 total fighting majors prior to facing Winnipeg on Thursday night. The New York Rangers were tops with 31 while the Detroit Red Wings were last with six.

Burke's comments come at a time where the sport has been forced to do some soul-searching. Tough guys Derek Boogaard, Rick Rypien and Wade Belak died in a short span over the summer and Boston University doctors found evidence of the neurodegenerative disease CTE in Boogaard's brain, as they have with other former fighters.

At the same time, a number of high-profile NHLers have been sidelined with concussions while new league disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan has attempted to lead a crackdown on dangerous hits, suspending three players in the last week alone.

Burke once held Shanahan's job and believes the director of player safety wouldn't be so busy if players were policing the game themselves with more fights.

"(Shanahan) needs a telephone receptionist in his house because of all of this crap that's going on on the ice," said Burke. "These guys that won't back it up, won't drop their gloves, run around and elbow people in the head and hit people from behind. They never have to answer for that in the game, they used to have to answer for that in the game.

"The players (used to) police the game and now it's Brendan Shanahan."

A number of recent incidents have drawn Burke's ire, including the hit that got Chicago's Daniel Carcillo suspended seven games and the elbow that drew a five-game ban for Calgary's Rene Bourque. He was also upset after watching Tampa Bay's Steve Downie at his agitating best -- or worst -- during a game at Air Canada Centre on Tuesday night.

The linesmen stepped between Downie and a Leafs player on more than one occasion during that game.

"I wonder about the accountability in our game and the notion that players would stick up for themselves and for each other," said Burke. "I wonder where we're going with it, that's the only lament I have on this. The fear that if we don't have guys looking after each other that the rats will take this game over.

"You see guys that run around and start stuff and won't back it up and it makes me sick to my stomach."

The decision to demote Orr was clearly a difficult one for Burke, who said he experienced a sleepless night before speaking with the tough guy. The Leafs gave the 28-year-old forward a US$4-million, four-year contract in 2009 but couldn't find room for him in the lineup on many nights this season -- dressing him for just five of 39 games.

Orr is essentially a one-dimensional fighter in a league with very few other heavyweights for him to square off against.

"If there's no dance partner for Colton, it's pretty hard not to be able to say well, 'Darryl Boyce gives us more on a given night or whoever, Joey Crabb,"' said Burke. "We've made the same judgments, so I'm not throwing stones as much as saying I don't like where it's going."

It's quite possible that Orr's NHL career might be over after 378 career games and 921 penalty minutes. But Burke wasn't quite ready to entertain that possibility just yet.

"My admiration for this kid just knows no limits," he said. "This is a wonderful young man and now he's cleared (waivers) so we've got to get him back to the Marlies and get him playing. I'm trying to get his game back and see where he can maybe help us later in the season."

With the way things seem to be going, it's hard to imagine that happening.

...and no, dom, I did not write that script for Burke.

Nothing to do with attendance numbers, Canadians have the Heritage Classic, the Winter Classic has been US teams. That said, the Bruins brought sellout crowds to both Dallas and Phoenix this year. I'm betting B's Detroit.

Absolutely dominating win by the B's tonight. The game was over less than 1 minute in but they decided to play a full 60 anyway so the B's could score 9 unanswered goals (7 even strength, 1 PP, 1 SH) and 2U's 2K's 2 points could get another 60 minutes of shutout hockey.

Thanks dom!

Jack catches a lot of flack for being a homer, but if you watch the games he calls, he gets just as excited when the other team scores as well. He loves the game and loves his job.

The scary part is that the leagues most dominant offense only has 2 players in the top 50 in scoring. Seguin's sitting at 23rd in the league in points, Marchand's at 47th. We only have 7 in the top 100 (Lucic 54th, Krecji 73rd, Peverly 81st, Horton 87th and Chara 97th). The goals come from everywhere, there is no guy who the team relies on to score. They are truly a team.

He is a homer indeed but his excitement is the reason why most B's fans, including myself, crank up the volume while watching the game at home. I cant imagine listening to Brick alone for the whole game

On a side note, Seguin's speed and puck handling skills makes some players on the ice look like they are standing still.

I think Paille's still faster, not a better stickhandler but quicker acceleration and higher top end.

Word on the street that "glass" Gagne is out for the season.

Reallignment is off NHLPA say's f' that. Looks like Winnipeg is still going to be in the Southeast division.

The National Hockey League announced today that it will not move forward with implementation of the Realignment Plan and modified Playoff Format recently approved by the NHL Board of Governors for the 2012-13 NHL season because the NHLPA has refused to provide its consent.

"It is unfortunate that the NHLPA has unreasonably refused to approve a Plan that an overwhelming majority of our Clubs voted to support, and that has received such widespread support from our fans and other members of the hockey community, including Players," said NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly. "We have now spent the better part of four weeks attempting to satisfy the NHLPA’s purported concerns with the Plan with no success. Because we have already been forced to delay, and as a result are already late in beginning the process of preparing next season’s schedule, we have no choice but to abandon our intention to implement the Realignment Plan and modified Playoff Format for next season."

"We believe the Union acted unreasonably in violation of the League’s rights. We intend to evaluate all of our available legal options and to pursue adequate remedies, as appropriate."

As a result of the League’s decision today, the NHL will maintain its current alignment and Playoff Format for the 2012-13 season.

I don't think that's how it works. He would have to split the revenue with the University and their hasn't been any reported agreement. Besides, the TV optics would be better downtown (hold the guffaws).

Any thoughts on the Marchand hit? He got him above the knee. I could see a fine, but I'm not sure if it should be a suspension...

He had the same thing happen to him last year and I thought that was a more direct shot at the knees. No fine or suspension I believe...

I don't know when the rule changed, but that used to be called a hip check, one of our D got penalized for throwing a hip check earlier this season and he didn't even flip the guy. I really don't understand why he was ejected from the game, but I will be interested to see what Shanny says. I think a fine but no suspension, but who knows anymore

My thoughts exactly, I could see a possible fine only as he is a repeat offender and Shany might want to get him to tone his game down a bit...

He low-bridged him. The initial point of contact was below the hip and on the leg. It's a dangerous play.

I thought last year's injuries were bad, they've only gotten worse. We're without HALF our team. At least we got Michalek and Martin back, but losing Staal and Neal hurts

Sorry, kids. Even I can't make this stuff up!!!

Dustin Penner made it through a full practice today, and afterward said his back felt better. Penner said he suffered back spasms yesterday morning while — and I promise I’m not making this up — eating pancakes. Penner kept a good sense of humor about the whole episode but understandably didn’t think the back pain itself was very funny.

PENNER: “Not bad. Better than yesterday. I woke up fine, sat down to eat and it locked right up. It never happened to me before. I couldn’t stand up. I was probably at the third stage of evolution. So my wife helped me get dressed, and then I drove to the rink here, to hope they could do some magic and get it opened up. Kinger [trainer Chris Kingsley] just looked at me and said, `Go home.’ So I got some treatment and went home.

“Apparently it’s one of those mysterious things, where you can throw it out (from) sneezing. I just leaned over to dip into some delicious pancakes that my wife made. It’s just like it [the pain] wraps around you and squeezes. … So it was disappointing. Hopefully it’s just an isolated incident, and not something that’s going to become chronic.”

Shanny say 5 games. I'm mixed on the play, Marchand goes real low just before he makes the check but then again he's pretty short so who knows, I love hip checks but this was a pretty low one.

I think what really got him the suspension were the 2 or 3 punches he through at Salo shortly before the incident. From Shanny's explanation it seemed like those were the road to intent.
