He hit his head on the boards but Chara never targeted the head. Remember he's 6'9" tall when he's bare foot probably about 7' with skates. Both those were clean hits. Neither hit came from the blind side. Chara's just bigger than everyone else.

I wouldn't call them dirty. Players should do everything possible to avoid hits from Chara.

Anything is a head shot with Chara. I'm 6'4" and it would still be a head shot.

I know how tall he is, but it doesn't take away from the fact that he contacted the back of the head with his arms. I thought that's what the league is trying to get away from?

yup, it's the players fault for sure

Frankly we all know that there's still too much gray area with these hits, but something needs to be done

This is just like the hits in football, the player goes to hit the guy with the ball, and the guy with the ball changes direction and lowers their head.

Grabovski seemed to have changed and made himself smaller before the hit. Chara didn't go after the head.

There's a difference between a head shot and targeting the head. The first hit, Chara was totally committed to taking Grabovski to the boards, Grabovski knew it but leaned over right before the collision. Nothing Chara could do about it at that point, he had all shoulders until Grabovski leaned over. The second hit Chara looked to have hit him cleanly in the shoulders as well and Grabovski's head bashed the boards. Both cases resulted to Grabovski taking head shot but from what I see in neither case did Chara target the head.

There are going be injuries in a tough sport like hockey, not every concussion or "head shot" is the result of a dirty play. Sometimes it is the injured players fault for putting himself in a prone position. The hit Matt Hunwick laid on former team mate Marc Savard wasn't a dirty hit but none the less it resulted in a concussion.

Dirty hits that target the head are only part of the problem with concussions in the NHL. Another issue is that on average the players have gotten much bigger and stronger over the last 30 years. Bigger stronger players means bigger hits.

Now that the players hit harder we need better equipment. Padding is replaced with padding and hard plastic or hard composite plating. The items players were using to protect themselves from bone crushing hits are now adding to the bone crushing nature of the hit by adding armor to the already bigger stronger players. In great Judo style, the protection has become the weapon.

Now factor in that the only soft part of a hockey rink is the netting in the goal. The boards are hard the glass is hard the ice is hard the puck is hard and the pipes that support that ever so soft goal net are pretty hard too. Everything you crash into on a hockey rink is solid as a rock, add back in those bigger stronger harder hitting players covered in armor and people are going to get hurt.

Kaberle to Boston...done?

The Boston Globe is also reporting that the Tomas Kaberle trade is but a mere formality.

Quoting a league source, the paper’s hockey blog says that Kaberle is on the verge of heading to Beantown.

The deal would reportedly see Joe Colborne and Boston’s 2011 first-round pick headed to Toronto for Kaberle.
Additionally the Leafs are supposed to get Boston's #1 pick in this years draft.

Ruutu traded to the Ducks

Right-winger Francis Lessard will arrive to fill the spot Senators general manager Bryan Murray opened when he traded left-winger Jarkko Ruutu to the Anaheim Ducks for a sixth-round draft pick (which was previously acquired from Phoenix) on Thursday.

Ruutu, following Mike Fisher and Chris Kelly, is the third Senator to be traded in less than a week as Murray blows up the Ottawa roster and prepares to make it over.

Lessard's arrival will mean that Ottawa's lineup against the Boston Bruins tonight will feature six Binghamton Senators. And there will be more openings in the days leading up to the Feb. 28 trade deadline. Murray said he suspects there will be "at least" a couple more deals.

He'll be in a Bruins uniform tonight vs the Ottawa Replacements.

FWIW, the 1st rounder the Leafs are getting isn't the one they gave to the B's in the Kessel deal, it will be the less valuable of the 1st rounders the B's have. Valabik is most likely going to be a member of the Providence Bruins.

Kinda sad to see him go but they've sucked so long with him, what difference does it make.

Is a 25th and 30th 1st round pick better than a 5th?

Any info on the Colborne kid would be appreciated.

BTW - Is it too early to trade Phenuf and Komarsarik? Maybe we could get spots 25 through 30 in this year's 1st round.

Colborne is a decent prospect for the Bruins...Big as in Joe Thornton big. But, that's the thing too...he also kinda plays like Jumbo Joe...smaller than his size often.

At least that's the scouting report. If he can develop a mean streak, he may become quite something.

16th overall in the 08 draft. Hasn't ever played for the big B's and very few games with the Providence B's so we don't know much either. From his prospect report.....

•Led the AJHL in playoff scoring with 16 points (8-8-16), including six power-play goals, en route to an AJHL championship in 2008.
•In 2007-08 he tied for first overall in the league with 57 assists and his 90 points placed him second overall.
•Participated in the 2007 CJAHL Top Prospects Game and was unanimously selected to Team South for the 2008 AJHL All-Star Game.
•Posted seven points (3-5--7) at the 2007 World Junior ‘A’ Challenge as a member of Team Canada West, helping his team win gold.
