Sidney Crosby’s health is a public trust

I'm starting to like The Globe and Mail, seems to be an amazing publication coming out of Toronto.

This is a gem:
Sidney Crosby’s health is a public trust. A healthy Mr. Crosby belongs to the fans and aspiring players everywhere. The National Hockey League and the Pittsburgh Penguins hockey club failed to live up to their duty as guardians of that trust, and are now reaping what they sowed: Mr. Crosby will miss the all-star game this weekend (his 10th game out with a concussion), undermining the much publicized event in the United States.
The Pens have failed Sid, hockey fans and the universe....

you have my permission to go around telling the world about this massive failure reported. I will not argue nor debate..

They don't mean that literally.

Did you miss the part about the NHL also being responsible? Or did you only see Pittsburgh Penguins and get butthurt again? Try not to take everytrhing so personally. You'll live longer.

They're 100% correct... In general terms. Of course they didn't do anything specific to cause the injury but everyone is basically standing around doing nothing about head shots. And this is what happened and will continue to happen.

Then again the Steckel hit wasn't a head shot. Looked entirely accidental to me.

But what happens to Sid after even one more concussion? This is the point the writer is trying to address.

And why are you reading Toronto rags Jonsei? Is the 1x2 inch article on the Pens burried on the last page of the Pittsburgh papers again?

So I met a guy at the game last night that does stats/time keeping for the NHL.
(He sits between the penalty boxes during the game).

Anyway we have a nice long conversation about the league, stats, rules, players, etc and so on....he had a unique perspective on the game to say the least....a great guy.

He gave me a copy of the game notes and media clips sheets.
Every stat you could every possibly think of for the Kings and Sharks.
It's like getting the comprehensive encyclopedia on each time. (+30 pages double-printed on each side) Amazing stuff.

Anyway, I thought I would share this "gem" from the media clips sheet.
The caption is gold.

Great caption, in the club that I sit in, they always put out game notes/media stat guides for people to pick up, you're right, there is so much freaking detail and stats in those things, it's unreal

...another little tidbit from the NHL stat-guy....he stated the NHL is planning to open a west coast war room next year to deal with video replay so that the peeps in Toronto don't have to stay up past midnight for west games.

perhaps lack of sleep is why the peeps in Toronto suck at video replay?

I seriously doubt that's going to happen. Makes waaayyyy too much sense.

BTW - According to Toronto media (so it can't possibly be true ) The deal lined up to sell the Coyote's to Holizer (sp?) is in serious trouble because the city can't come up with the required 100 mill.

Correct me if I'm wrong. But Glendale is a relatively small city of about 250K? Should they really be putting all this money into a sports team? I know they're trying not to lose anymore money but they have to cut their losses at some point. I wonder what people from Glendale have to say.

In related news, Quebec city is getting a new building with even a hint of the possibility of another NHL team. The Feds have a 1 Billion dollar chest set aside specifically for athletics.

Sucks having a minority government at the ready to buy votes.

^^ I believe you are correct, sir.

In a sane league, the yotes would move to the Eskimo north....but the league is nuts.

Well, even the Count has made it very clear that if they can't get things settled in Phoenix, the team is moving to Winterpeg.

Glendale, is just the municipality that will be footing the bill. The population of the surrounding cities bring it to about 3 million.

Thats what I'm saying, Its nuts for a municipality that small to be dumping all that money into a sports team. Unless its a guaranteed money maker, which the Coyotes aren't.

Every reporter I've heard in that area says the team should have been located in Scottsdale I think. Where the Suns play.

Shero interview. I'm beginning to forgive him for the Hossa trade...
http://www.pittsburghmagazine.com/Pi...011/Ray-Shero/

HBO's "24/7" series revealed that you and coach Bylsma meet to evaluate players' performances on a 1-5 scale. Do players ever get mad about their rating?
"Tough. What are they gonna do, call their mom? This is hockey. They'll get over it."

Not the point I'm trying to make. Should Glendale still be dumping money into what seems like a sinking ship? Can they afford it?

Scottsdale was only brought up because apparently if a team was to survive in Phoenix, it would have to be there.

And what's with Semin and the 1 year deals? Good for the team, but he's taking a chance.

Glendale, Scotsdale, Phoenix, they all share a city boarder. Doesn't matter where the arena is placed, still going to get the same fan base. :shrug;

From what I've heard from Jeremy Roenick who lives there. (Yes Jonsei, on The Fan. He sometimes co-hosts the morning show)

The arena is too far away for most of the population. They have to drive 30-45 minutes to get there. Its not a great location. Again, never been there just what I heard. Its already hard enough for people in Arizona to like hockey. Add in another obstacle and can we can see why the team when bankrupt.

Scotsdale, is only about 250k as well, but is closer to Phoenix, which is about 2 million. If they aren't putting up the money and Glendale is

I'm not suggesting Scottsdale should step up. Its way past that point now. Just that it would have been a better place to put the team from day 1. Hindsight I know.

Glendale is putting the money up because at this point they're up to their neck in losses and feel the only way out is to keep the team there and turn it around. Coyotes are that buildings only tenant.

Sounds like a pretty normal commute for most US metros.

Pretty lame excuse, it really is dependent on how committed ownership is to putting competitive product on the ice. Yummy cakes commuted by dog sled for two days to see his Hawks last year. He probably didn't do that circa 2004 though when ownership was indifferent to the fan base.

Actually, I did go in beyond frigid weather back in the early 2000s to watch a terrible Hawks team get pasted on ice...

Still remember the Bell, Arnason, Calder "1st line"...
