The Lombardi Apology
http://www.citytv.com/toronto/cityne...s-for-outburst
Los Angeles Kings general manager Dean Lombardi has apologized to NHL vice-president Mike Murphy for an outburst following his team's loss to the Phoenix Coyotes on Thursday night, but still expects a phone call from NHL commissioner Gary Bettman.
Lombardi was furious after a Coyotes goal scored by Martin Hanzal on a high stick was allowed following a lengthy review by the league's war room in Toronto. He said Murphy’s decision was swayed by the fact that he didn't get the GM job with the Kings.
"I called Mike Murphy and apologized first thing this morning," Lombardi said. "He was very professional and a bigger man than me."
Asked if he was trying to deflect attention away from his team which has been slumping after a terrific start, Lombardi admitted, "Yeah, there was some of that."
Still, Lombardi was upset at the call and how the on-ice officials handled it.
"They are supposed to get together and discuss it so that one has the opportunity to over-rule the original call," Lombardi said. "I mean it was so obvious it was knocked in with a high stick. Our defenceman Matt Greene is 6-foot-3 and the guy’s stick was right in his face."
The Coyotes went on to win the game 2-0, handing the Kings their third straight defeat.
An irate Lombardi called out the NHL's review crew after the game.
"When the guy in Toronto making the decisions on the goals, in Ottawa and the one tonight, wanted the G.M.'s job in L.A. and was not happy about not getting it, you have to assume you are going to get those type of calls,'' Lombardi told lakings.com. "However, we have put ourselves in a position where these calls have a monumental effect on our season, and we're going to have to find a way out of it ourselves.''
Kings head coach Terry Murray also expressed his frustration following the loss.
"I don't know why we have video replay in the National Hockey League,'' Murray said. "That's all I can say. If the replay is there for review of goals and non-goals… I don't know. You've got a guy who gets credit for the goal. He's 6-foot-6, and the stick is up above his head. Matt Greene is 6-3, and he's batting the puck down his his hand beside his ear, and the net is four feet high. It doesn't add up.
"It makes no sense. No sense. How does it get called on the ice a goal, first of all, and then how does the replay hold it up? I don't know. I don't have an answer.''
Murray was asked if he got an explanation from the on-ice officials.
"They don't come near you," Murray said.

$50 Large for Deano!

The NHL has fined Los Angeles Kings president and general manager Dean Lombardi $50,000 for critical comments he made on Thursday night. Lombardi called into question the integrity of Mike Murphy, the NHL's senior vice-president of hockey operations after a controversial goal by Martin Hanzal during L.A.'s loss to the Phoenix Coyotes.

^ So, when someone gets fined, is it out of his pocket? Or does the organization (i.e. LA) help pay for this...?

'There is no acceptable explanation or excuse for commentary challenging the integrity of the League's Hockey Operations Department in general or Mike Murphy, in particular," Commissioner Gary Bettman said.
'People can disagree with a call by an official on the ice or an official in the Situation Room in Toronto, but even in instances of the utmost frustration there is no justification for speaking as inappropriately and irresponsibly as Mr. Lombardi did," Commissioner Bettman added. 'Mike Murphy is a devoted caretaker of the game. His commitment to the National Hockey League, all 30 of its Clubs – and to the game – is beyond challenge, question or debate.

How dare anyone question the integrity of someone at the NHL offices????? Their integrity and honesty is beyond reproach.

Jonsei you'll be thrilled to know that TSN is launching a radio station to go up against the Fan 590. Just think of all the made up stories 2 Toronto radio stations will be capable of!
Yummy apparently they snatched Mike Richards from the Fan Calgary. Know anything about him?

And nice win by the Hawks.
Seems like the NHL is on a bit of a PR kick after that call for the Kings.
Beninati and Locker did a report on "how" it is determine the "correct" call for a good goal. They had cameras showing the set up and talking to the guys who make the final calls. I think more local channels will be "invited" into the replay center when teams visit to play the Leafs.

Blackhawks look dominating against the Red Wings on Saturday, but stink up the joint against the Flyers today.....

Did Detroit actually think that they were going to have Nabakov play on their team? I didn't see anyway he would clear waivers and play for them. He's too good for 29 other teams to pass up on.
Any word on Savard?
Trolling Canuckistan
Fortunately, he was sent back to Boston for evaluation so we can now officially put our lines back to the way they should have been all year (Krecji pivoting Looch and Horton). IMO the only issue with the Savard injury is that it makes him untradeable, the team is better without him.
Got to have some pity on the guy, he may not be able to play any longer.

And he won't be the last. You can thank the NHL for that.

Crosby will be skipping the all star festivities, before all the Canadian media says it's out of protest for the type of nacho cheese served by the NHL arenas, let me point out that the team made him skip, and had it been his decision he would have went.

I was hoping Sid would play. Personally, I'm really liking the players draft for the All-Star tilt.
And @ Kane being a co-captain. WTF.

He hasn't played a game for awhile, he should sit out until they know he can walk a line without having problems.

I was hoping he would too, especially since he led in votes again, and he was hurt 2 years ago, it really is a shame. But the team made their decision, so hopefully people won't be mad at him, since he had every intention to attend.

Damn, I was so looking forward to watching the All-Star game too.

Savard never acccepts responsibility for his mistakes but is great at making excuses. I was rooting for a trade but if he's hurt that isn't a possibility.
I never like to see players retire due to injury.
They have had some pretty high scoring games, was he in the line up for those?
Trolling Canuckistan
He was, however he only figures into the scoring sheet for the other team with his inopportune give aways. We've got this kid named Brad Marchand who is the standout of the team. He started on the 4th line and has been promoted up to basically every line since then. IIRC, he leads the league in short handed goals, he's 7th in the league for plus minus. The kid doesn't take a fraction of a second off, he plays with everything he's got at all times and doesn't ever quit. What ever line Brad Marchand is playing on becomes the scoring line.
He's the "Poni and Mitchell" of the Bruins.
