Sony: PS3 News and Discussion Thread
^ The Best Buy by me had the PS3 in their flyer this week.
They're getting a minimum of 5 "base" units and a minimum of 20 "premium" units.
Store opens at 7am. At 6am they will give out tickets to all customers in line. The dislaimer is that a ticket does not guarantee a PS3. My guess is that people will start lining up the night before...

There is a BB close to my work that is apparantly doing a midnight release. I've basically come to terms with the fact that I won't be getting one at launch. Which is for the best, due to, as you said, making sure production kinks are worked out, etc. However, the 5 year old kid in me keeps shouting "i want an oompa looma now"
supposedly they were alotted 80,000, but somehow they sold almost 90,000
must have been some "extra" ones. Anyway some sites are saying it was a "muted" launch, whatever that means. I'd have to call it a success.

Nearly 90,000 PS3s sold in Japan in two days
Tom Bramwell 17:24 13/11/2006
Meanwhile grey imports reach as much at GBP 1500
Sony sold 88,400 PlayStation 3 consoles over the weekend in Japan according to Japanese magazine company Enterbrain, which publishes Famitsu.
The number falls around halfway between the 100,000 launch-unit target Sony was aiming for and the 80,000 figure reported in the Nikkei Shimbun prior to launch.
The best selling games were Namco Bandai's Ridge Racer 7 and Gundam: Target in Sight, both of which sold around 30,000 units.
The near-instant total depletion of hardware stock has led to a huge number of Internet auctions for so-called "used" PS3 consoles spring up, some with asking prices more than twice that charged by retail.
It's a trend that's even being felt in Europe.
Some web-based importers have decided not to sell the console to clients in the European Union after Sony enjoyed success in its attempts to stifle Hong Kong-based Lik-Sang, which went out of business recently.
But one London-based importer is known to be offering the console, along with its five launch titles, for GBP 1500.

I played it at Target today. It's decent but the games I played are nothing to get excited over at the moment. I'll definitely wait until the summer at the earliest. Hopefully they drop the price fairly soon

its a weird time, I mean, how long have we been talking about PS3 for. To finally come to the point where its being released, I dunno, its weird.

I have one reserved at EB Games... Should get that one for sure
I have one reserved at Game Crazy... like 2 years ago... I doubt I will get a PS3 from them
I am thinking about swinging by a few local 24 hour Walmarts around 9pm to see if there is a line... if not large, I may wait.
Then at 5am, its over to best buy to get a raffle ticket...
In total I am hoping to get 2 ps3's, so ONE can pay for the one I am keeping. FREE PS3!
I have heard rumors from sources that are in the know that Sony is cutting back the initial NA launch quantity of PS3's from 400,000 to approximately 300,000 units.
Here is an article about Gamespot/EB games which seems to go along with the rumor:
Here is an article about Gamespot/EB games which seems to go along with the rumor:
Last month, retailer GameStop began accepting "limited" preorders for the PlayStation 3, asking customers to put down $100 in advance for the system, with a modest expectation of eight units per store in most cases. Now it appears the largest gaming specialty chain in North America won't be receiving even that many systems.
A GameStop representative told GameSpot today that the company received launch allocation numbers from Sony, and that it won't be able to fill its existing PS3 preorders. The representative declined to comment on how many systems GameStop expected to receive, or how short of that figure the company's share of systems would be.
"We are beginning to notify our customers that our initial shipment of PS3 systems will not be what we expected," the representative said. "As this is not an ideal situation, we are asking employees to wait to purchase systems until the second shipment. We are anticipating having systems to cover reservations before Christmas."
For launch day, preorders will be filled in the order they were received, and those who had a preorder but are denied a system on day one will receive something for their troubles. GameStop will give those unfortunate customers (as well as unfortunate employees) a free used game or DVD valued at $19.99 or less when they eventually wind up purchasing the system.
Those who reserved a system won't need to wait long to find out if they can expect a system on launch day. Starting tomorrow, customers who preordered a PS3 will be contacted personally by phone and updated on the status of their reservation, the rep said.
And while it might be a nonissue considering the clamor for consumers to get their hands on the coveted systems, GameStop is also asking anyone with a confirmed preorder to pick their systems up by Saturday evening.

.Ok that was a bit exaggerated, but keep in mind most of those PS3's were bought by chinese peeps trying to resell them.

If I'm going to buy all 3 consoles, 360 will be the last on my list.
Looks like gamestop/eb aren't going to have enough units to meet the preorders.......
I have the #2 spot so hopefully i'll still be fine.....

It is going to be an absolute mad fest when the stores open... I will be skipping my 8:00 class and driving around all the Best Buys, EB Games and Wal Marts in Southern Ontario to watch the madness unfold. It will be fun.
Full PS3 review in Japanese, but lots of screenshots:

It definitely is a dud in Japan, but not quite as bad as you mentioned.

January... yeah right. If sony has had over 3 months to manufacture PS3's, and has only managed to make 400,000, what makes you think they will meet demand given 1 more month?

We don't play dumb games like Gears of War, Halo 3 or Madden 07...if FFXIII, SRWOG3 and DQIX somehow ended up on 360, the Japanese people will buy 360 instead of PS3 I can guarantee that.

PS: 511 / 3871 = 13.20 %
PS2: 292 / 3587 = 8.14 %
Total: 803 / 7458 = 10.77 %
It's far from perfect, but I would still take it.

^ More units are in production. I just think ghost_master is saying there won't be "plenty" of them like you mentioned in your post. But production never stops, so they will be constantly releasing new batches. I don't think there will be "plenty" of PS3's until late spring or so. By then the hype will have died down and production will have caught up.
So after Christmas there will be some available, but they still won't be easy to come by.

Kind of sad that MS had such a headstart and will get passed so easily. It's a shame they're so anti-MS, b/c it's not a bad system. Those Japanese sure love their Nintendo and Sony brands though!!

Isn't it the same way with cars? I don't think they've taken to American made cars either.
