Sony: PS3 News and Discussion Thread
you know this whole 5-systems per game thing.. I have a feeling that may change over the course of time... like when Sony starts to notice that, there seems to be about 1/5th the games downloaded compared to the number of players.
Serious though, Sony needs all the money it can get, the whole battery recall fiasco really stabbed em pretty bad, something like $500m+ lost revenue. Not to mention the hit on their stock, combined with the PS3 delays, losing the digital audio player war, etc. etc. They need help. From us! lol

Uh ... camping out? Welcome to like 10 years ago. eBay baby!
J/K ... I'll be like you (and my 3 other friends) camping out at various stores across southeast Michigan trying to pick up a PS3.

Sony Corp., which slashed its profit forecast yesterday, said it may not reach this year's shipment target for the PlayStation 3 game console because of a parts shortage in the Blu-ray high-definition disc drive.
Sony plans to ship two million PlayStation 3 players this year to the U.S. and Japan, and six million worldwide by March. The Tokyo-based company said yesterday annual profit would fall 39 percent to its lowest in five years on price cuts of the console in Japan and a recall of 9.6 million computer batteries.
"The honest answer is it's more of a target'' for PlayStation 3 shipments, Jack Tretton, co-chairman of Sony Computer Entertainment America, said yesterday in an interview. "Clearly we've had production issues.''
A shortage of the PlayStation 3 would give Microsoft Corp. and Nintendo Co. a bigger head start in the $20 billion console market when they sell their players next month in time for the year's biggest sales season. Sony cut the price of the PS3 in Japan after consumers complained it was too expensive compared with Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Nintendo's Wii.
"It would be a big hill to climb with a console that costs twice as much,'' said John Broady, an analyst for GameSpot.com, a unit of Cnet Networks Entertainment that tracks video-game sales. "A lot of this is driven by mothers. When they look at their budget, I think the Wii is going to be very attractive.''

While using the PSP as a rear-view mirror in Gran Turismo would necessitate a mutation of controllable limbs, Sony has come up with something much more intriguing lately. You can access the PS3’s system menus via the PSP, wirelessly, using a feature called “Remote Play.” Big Kahuna Phil Harrison also says that the PSP will eventually be able to access the PS3’s hard drive from any Wi-Fi spot in the world, rather than just on your local wireless network.

knew there was a reason to buy PSP.
On a side note, the BD-ROM spec goes up to 200 gigabytes.

the extended capacity of BD is great news - you may or not remember but a long while ago when we were speculating about BD and its capability for 50gb, a good number of people doubted there would even be any use for such high capacity for a video game. Well I read an article recently that said developers are having no trouble at all filling up the BD discs. They cited HD content as the primary culprit. And, I believe it, HD content takes up gobs of space. So its nice to know they have even more to work with..
holy *@&*&#@.. this is from over 2 years ago!

its an 8-layer disc! TDK has already made one - don't really know how I missed this:

maybe I just forgot about it... but maybe I never knew..
^ Me too... I will use it as a rear-view mirror for the racing games
BTW, I had read an article somewhere (can't remember where) that BluRay is kicking ass in Japan. Between the two formats 9 of the top 10 rentals are BluRay discs and 1 is HD-DVD.

I heard a rumor that they would be pre-ordering this sunday, which promises to be a total bloodbath, considering they will also be taking pre-orders from the wii. Can you imagine the angry mob lined up in front of the door, ready to rush into the store and fight their way to the videogame counter? Craziness.....
Any one see the commercial during the World Series with the baby doll and the PS3??

for those of you who are buying at launch, what games do you plan on buying?
I am going for NBA 2K7 and Tiger 07. I am up in the air on Madden and Fight Night since they have been out for a while on other consoles

OMG @ PS3 Power consumption: http://www.psxextreme.com/ps3-news/406.html
The PS2 uses only 45 watts of power and in stark contrast, the PS3 will soak up 380 watts, which is also more than twice the 160 watts consumed by the Xbox 360. If you go by current electric costs, that PS3 is set to cost you about $40/year to run if you play it for two hours per day. Depending on how big a gamer you are, this news may or may not make much difference to you.

can't wait to play it but I will wait a little and wont get trampled.
I think that the power consumption falls within reasonable expectations. I have a 400 watt psu in my computer and this is far more powerful. The thing is that all the energy is getting burned in that tiny box, I wonder how hot it will run.

As you mentioned that's a lot of heat in a small box, espcially with no external power box. If the 360 was having failures with half the power AND an external power supply, I can see the PS3's either being really loud to keep cool or burning out after a 8 hour gaming marathon.

That would explain some of the overheating issues.

If I get one at launch, or in the "launch window". I will probably get Resistance: Fall of Man and NBA 2k7. Also on my list are Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Vegas and Call of Duty 3, although these probably won't be out at launch. I alos think Warhawk will be cool.

Uses twice as much power as the Xbox in a case about the same size as the Xbox, and the Xbox has overheating issues with an external power sources, yea I am sure that overheating is an isolated issue, especially given Sony's recent quality issues.

The PS3 is super quiet
At a rating of just 22 decibels, it’s only slightly louder than a human whisper. All we know is that we could barely hear it running. That’s definitely worth something.
You may have heard rumors on the Internets that the PS3 was practically setting people on fire at last month’s Tokyo Game Show. Whether or not that’s true, we witnessed dozens of units performing flawlessly for several hours at a press event recently. While the air conditioning struggled against a small army of PS3s, enormous HDTVs, and excitable game reporters, the PS3s themselves hummed along quietly and solidly.
Of course, there’s always the possibility that one of them burst into flames just as we were leaving. But we’re pretty confident in the system’s ability to stay cool under pressure.

Oh and
at people (not necessarily on here, just in general) making a big deal out of power consumption. Honestly, probably not even something I'd ever take into consideration. In fact, I'd expect a unit as powerful and that does as much as the PS3 does to take up more power then the PS2, just as I expected the 360 to use more power then the XBOX or a plasma TV to use more power then a DLP TV.

I've posted this on several boards along with many others and I have yet to see someone be able to link this info... so I'll try it here. If it's happening so much and is such a problem, then finding reports of it freezing all over the world should be easy to find. But so far, just an isolated incident at one show which was blown out of proportion is all I keep reading about.

Hey perhaps Sony has learned how to defy physics and their unit that uses twice as much power somehow doesn't overheat. I doubt it though, especially given their recent track record.
And the PS3 units have not been out for that long on display, but I would like for you to post a link that shows that someone was watching each individual unit for the entire time they were on. Otherwise it's like seeing a couple Range Rovers drive by and think to yourself that they must be reliable cars.

Surprise, surprise...
What's worse than 100,000 units at launch? How about 80,000? The Nikkei Keizai Shimbun morning edition reports today that due to component shortages, Sony will have only 80,000 units ready for the PS3's 11/11 Japanese launch. This cuts back by a fifth the initial launch target of 100,000.
The lack of digits in that number is even more staggering when you consider that the PS2 sold out of nearly a million units when it launched back in March of 2000.

at Range Rovers. That was a good one.No such link exists. Even if someone did sit there and watch every box every second, not sure you'd be able to find the link, b/c that would be pathetic and hopefully if someone did it, they wouldn't admit to it on the public internet.
My point is that they have been on display for over a year, and there was only one report of freezing at the TGS show, and it has been contributed to the sealed display case which prevented proper cooling and airflow. If it was such a consistant problem, it would be occurring more frequently. And yes, the PS3 debuted at E3 in 2005 and has been displayed at several game shows and conventions around the world since then and were either running self contained demos or were playable.
As for Sony's ability to manipulate physics... plasmas use far more power then regular TVs yet they don't overheat. Some people have higher end gaming computers with large internal power supplies (400+ watts) and they don't overheat. So I don't see why the PS3 would if it is properly ventilated.
Don't get me wrong, I think the PS3 launch will be as well executed as the 360 launch was, but that's kind of expected with machines like this. I think whenever new technology is launched companies expect a certain percentage of problems. This would go across the board, from computers, to TVs, to cars, etc. How they handle it will be the key and is partially the reason why I'm waiting 6-8 months to get one, as I did with the 360. Get the kinks out, then I'll hop on one.

If the number of units gets slashed here, oh boy... the shit will hit the fan.
