I would find it hard to believe that Japan is getting their allotment cut and not ours.
Japan was already only getting 20% of the global allotment, and now this. I would bet North America loses about 15-20% of theirs too.

My point is that they have been on display for over a year, and there was only one report of freezing at the TGS show, and it has been contributed to the sealed display case which prevented proper cooling and airflow. If it was such a consistant problem, it would be occurring more frequently. And yes, the PS3 debuted at E3 in 2005 and has been displayed at several game shows and conventions around the world since then and were either running self contained demos or were playable.
As for Sony's ability to manipulate physics... plasmas use far more power then regular TVs yet they don't overheat. Some people have higher end gaming computers with large internal power supplies (400+ watts) and they don't overheat. So I don't see why the PS3 would if it is properly ventilated.
Don't get me wrong, I think the PS3 launch will be as well executed as the 360 launch was, but that's kind of expected with machines like this. I think whenever new technology is launched companies expect a certain percentage of problems. This would go across the board, from computers, to TVs, to cars, etc. How they handle it will be the key and is partially the reason why I'm waiting 6-8 months to get one, as I did with the 360. Get the kinks out, then I'll hop on one.
I would be willing to bet (take me up on it if you like
) that the PS3 has overheating issues at least comparable to the 360.And the analogy comparing a Plasma TV and a Tube TV is not very valid considering that they are radically different technologies. The PS3 and 360 are far closer technologically. Which is why I think the PS3 will suffer very similar heat issues.
The PS3 is super quiet
At a rating of just 22 decibels, it’s only slightly louder than a human whisper. All we know is that we could barely hear it running. That’s definitely worth something.
You may have heard rumors on the Internets that the PS3 was practically setting people on fire at last month’s Tokyo Game Show. Whether or not that’s true, we witnessed dozens of units performing flawlessly for several hours at a press event recently. While the air conditioning struggled against a small army of PS3s, enormous HDTVs, and excitable game reporters, the PS3s themselves hummed along quietly and solidly.
Of course, there’s always the possibility that one of them burst into flames just as we were leaving. But we’re pretty confident in the system’s ability to stay cool under pressure.

I know tons of people that play video games for 8 hours straight. Was that the first time those particular PS3's were used? Do they take them apart and replace any possibly faulty parts before they show them at another show to prevent any bad publicity? Maybe.
Until the units get in actual gamers homes noen of these articles mean shit.
I'm just syaing that the laws of thermodynamics show that with that much electricity running through there it will have TONS of heat, and without ample cooling there are going to be problems.

And your comparison of people having gaming rigs with 400W power supplies was retarded. Those same people also have water cooled systems and other crazy shit. What does the PS3 have? A fan(s) and some heatsinks.
Thankfully, I'm in Canada and live in an igloo...the PS3 will be perfect up here with the heat generated.
Excellent.
And you gentlemen are being quite silly. Seeing that the machine is from Hell itself, no wonder it'll take up more power in its quest to destroy Mawmaw Earth. Geez...

Could explain why some of your replies are normal and others get you so worked up. Unless you stand to make or lose a substantial amount of money on these things, you should relax a bit. You'll live longer.

Sony (and its ad agency) need a home run with the PS3
Posted Oct 31st 2006 12:55PM by Blake Snow
Echoing the concerns of other investors, Fortune Magazine examines the much needed PS3 home run for Sony if the company wishes to stay competitive in the consumer electronics world. The piece calls the PS3 launch "one of the most closely watched new-product rollouts of all time." Given its recent PR beats, portable music spanking at the hand of Apple, and mass battery recalls, Sony is hoping its ad agency, TBWA, can in part save the company. That's a tall order for the Los Angeles-based firm with its $150 million Sony account.
More interesting, however, is what TBWA (which has done all US ads since the first PlayStation in 1995) has to accomplish: Not only do their ads need to encourage prospective gamers to buy Sony's third-generation console, the ads must convince said consumers to wait for the PS3 due to extremely limited launch availability.
From the article: "The agency's job is to persuade those who leave the store empty-handed to wait - to not buy Xbox or Wii - even if it means holding off until after Christmas before Sony can ramp up its manufacturing enough to satisfy the demand. So the bar is high indeed. If the Los Angeles office doesn't clear it with the PS3 launch, Sony may not be the only client that heads for the exit."

Ridge Racer 7 Update
Details on online play, downloads and hard disk support.
by Anoop Gantayat
October 27, 2006 - Japan isn't into the whole first person shooter thing, so unless Genji is really, really good, Ridge Racer 7 is going to be the title to beat at the 11/11 Japanese PS3 launch. Bandai Namco Games seems to be putting its best foot forward with the game, based on comments shared by producer Hideo Teramoto in the latest issue of Famitsu PS2.
Teramoto seems particularly proud of the game's technical merits. He feels that no other machine in the world is capable of producing Ridge Racer 7's combination of 1080p and 60 frames per second visuals. He also made a note of the game's 5.1 support for both sound effects and music.
But in Teramoto's mind, the robust online experience offered by Ridge Racer 7 is equal in importance to its technical merits. The game offers the 14 player races that Ridge Racer 6 offered last year on the Xbox 360. But Teramoto feels that the RR7 online experience has evolved beyond that title. Players enter a virtual world in which they compete against other players for money and rank. There's no separation between the main mode of play and an "online mode." Your money and rank are used both for single and online battles.
Famitsu PS2 quizzed Teramoto on one area that's on everyone's mind right now: hard disk support. Ridge Racer 7 makes extensive use of the PS3's hard disk. In addition to saving your game and saving future download contents, the hard disk is used for speeding up gameplay. The game does a hard disk install to the tune of five gigabytes.
The hard disk use could actually increase with Bandai Namco's download plans. Teramoto hopes to make stickers, music and race events available for download. Race events will be downloadable for free from the PlayStation Store. New music tracks will cost money, but Teramoto hopes to make available tracks that are worthy of the download.
Teramoto expects players to get a full half year of play time from Ridge Racer 7, which should be perfect if the PS3 sees a PS2-style software drought following launch.

At the most, 2 hours at a time...and I have not done that since my university days.

When the last prince of persia game came out I played it for 6 hours straight (with little breaks for food and bathroom) a couple different days.
On my days up I like to get intoxicated and play games with some friends. I don't really like going out much so I do that instead, lol.
the last game i played for 8 hours striaght for sure was legend of zelda on gamecube. buti don't really have time to do it for that long anymore. i usually do max 5 or 6 hours anymore, but that's still a lot of gaming for 350W of constant power.
One of those friends that games a lot has his xbox 360 sitting on top of a mini air conditioner in his basement (directly on top of the vents the cold air comes from) and has that nikko intercooler addon thing, and I'm positive that's the only reason it hasn't fried yet.
One thing I'm worried about is the PS3 controller. I'm really looking forward to Resistance: FOM, but I'm worried that FPS on the PS3 controller will be uncomfortable and difficult to control. The xbox 360 controller is pretty comfortable for these type of games with the placement of the two analog sticks....does anyone else thing a FPS on the sixaxis will be awkward?
If you could plug in a USB mouse and keyaord up to this thing, it would be all good

^ Well the higher end version has multiple USB ports, so I don't see why you couldn't hook up a keyboard and mouse.

Throw in the rumored Firefox for the PS3, and you have yourself the basic functions of a PC fufilled
only bad thing is, unless you setup your PS3 with a proper computer desk and chair, playing with keyboard/mouse kinda sux. I mean, if you put it on your coffee table, it sux and feels totally unnatural and totally limits your fragging. A proper computer desk > coffee table. And if the PS3 is to be the multimedia entertainment powerhouse for the family room, odds are you arent gonna have it setup on a computer desk. But, maybe you can move it around or something.
I tried mouse/keyboard with Q3 on DC on a coffee table and it really, really sucked.
ramblings is for ramblings, right?

I would hate to play a console game with a mouse and keyboard. I mean, would playing online even be a challenge?? And if everyone else is using a mouse and keyboard I am going DOWN with the controller
