People pining for the sleek PlayStation 3 gaming console might find shortages on eBay as well.

The unfettered online marketplace for such items as Elvis memorabilia and Ferraris is imposing restrictions on the PS3, which is expected to become one of the hottest holiday gifts when it hits stores Friday.

Only established eBay Inc. vendors -- those who have racked up comments from at least 50 previous customers and have positive ratings of at least 98 out of 100 points -- can list PS3s before Friday. Each vendor can only list only one PS3 per eBay account.

The listing must include a photo of the pre-order receipt, and the seller must guarantee shipment within 30 days from the date of purchase. Before Friday, PS3s can be listed on eBay only in auction formats -- not as "buy it now" items.

Potential buyers, trying to avoid long lines, rain checks and empty-handed sales clerks on Friday, have already bid up PS3s to $2,300. The suggested retail price is $500 for a basic PS3 with a 20-gigabyte drive and $600 for a version with 60 gigabytes, built-in wireless and a Blu-ray DVD player for high-definition video.

you arnt already camped out? i have been to 6 stores and all of them have a bunch of losers with tents pitched out in front waiting. this is ridiculous, nice to see all idiots out with tents, haha. Oh yea and there are like at least 8 people alreadsy waiting at every store i been to.

 

The Target next to my house didn't allow anyone to line up today, they said the first available time will be Thursday. Hence I'm going to be there at 11:30 to stake my claim.

 

It's one thing to camp out for tickets to a once in a lifetime concert, sporting event etc...

but for a gaming console that can be bought in the not too distant future for the same price, what a waste of time.

I went to the Vanderbilt bookstore a week ago since they will usually order anything for you and charge it to your student account. Apparently there were 5 people who had thought of it before me and got the 3 launch units. The bookstore wanted $800 for the 60gb, insane...

Best buy does say minimum 3 20gb and 20 60gb in store.. so we'll see if that is true.. I'm going to be camping tomorrow so i'll let yall know if I get one!

I was thinking about it today and of all the money that is going to be made off of putting these up on eBay, I hope [at least] one, just one person decides to donate one of them to a childrens hospital or something similar for these kids to enjoy over xmas. :hope:

 

damn...what i dont understand is, if everyone knows each store's qty (lets say 20 tops for best buy), why do more than 20 ppl sit in line if they most likely won't be getting a ps3, for sheer stupidity??

 

Not exactly, most places are giving out vouchers an hour before opening to those who are in line.

 

Um Standford is getting some PS3s to use for cancer research. But that would be nice but I doubt it will happen. If anything someone will camp out and smash PS3 like smash my 360 or smash my gamecube.

 

Yea most places did that last year and people who didnt get a PS3 will sometimes cause fights or jump people for it.

P.s. I just drove by Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Target, Frys & Toys R Us. Best Buy had the best turnout. There were about 30 people in line bearing tents. Target had about 10 people in line. Wal-Mart had about 10 people in line, one of which had about a 20" tv sittin on a knocked over shopping cart. No one at Fry,s Toys R Us. My guess is pre-order. I may be wrong.
