They make next to nothing directly, but indirectly the console sales drive the software sales. Cant have one without the other.

Mayor blames Sony for PS3 day of chaos

Boston boss legals computer giant

By Dean Pullen: Monday 20 November 2006, 21:39

THE MAYOR of Boston, Thomas M. Menino, has vowed to bill Sony for the trouble caused by the PS3 launch day chaos.

Speaking to the Boston Herald Menino spoke about the situation frankly, "We had to rush in 12 police cars with officers there and take them off the streets of our city where they're doing their patrols, to squelch the crowd that we had there" he said, referring to a crowd of 500 at a local mall.

"It's something that should not be tolerated" he said. "It's wrong to take advantage of the public that way, wrong by the manufacturer and by the retailer."

"The mayor feels this is a ploy by big business to fill the pockets of their stockholders on the public’s back without any regard for public safety" said a spokeswoman, for Menino.

The local Best Buy store at the mall had refused to take into account a list that had been created by customers in line, but were subsequently forced to by police.

"The store said our list was meaningless; it's going to be a mad rush, and whoever gets through the doors first gets one" said one queuing customer. Elsewhere, mobs of customers stampeded into stores, injuring a man in Wisconsin and forcing authorities to close a Wal-Mart in California.

In Connecticut, two armed thugs tried to rob a line of people outside a Wal-Mart and a prospective PS3 owner refused to give up his money and was subsequently shot. He was in stable condition yesterday at hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Sony spokesman Dave Karraker said that the chaos "It's not something we planned or foresaw," (ed: uh huh) he said, but even the mainstream media understood that this was a likely outcome with the Herald writing, "If Sony didn't, nearly everyone else seemed to know that limited supplies and high demand were a formula for trouble." µ

idiot, is all i have to say

http://www.kotaku.com/gaming/ps3/ame...ler-216142.php

America's Stupidest PS3 Reseller

A man in California was mugged by the 2 men who had agreed to buy his 2 PlayStation 3 systems over Craiglist for $2500 a piece. Arriving at a 1AM meet at a McDonald's in La Palma, the men he was selling to sprayed him with pepper spray and took off with the consoles.

I find it very hard to feel bad for this guy. First off, he obviously kept 2 PS3's out of the hands of people who really wanted them just so he could jack the prices. I know it's all about capitalism, but that doesn't mean he isn't a dick.

Secondly, any parent can tell you that meeting strange men from the internet in the middle of the night is a bad idea, especially when you are carrying $1200 worth of one of the hottest gaming products of the year. If ever anyone was asking for it, this guy was. The victim's name was not released, presumably so as not to have him labeled world's biggest dumbass.

$700 fun? Because at this point that is the only reason to own a PS3.

For some reason, the line for the Wii was probably 3 times as long as the line for the PS3. I went to Target on Thurs. and Sat. but not to see how big the lines were. Talking about day before it launched, around 7-8ish. Surprising if you ask me.

As shady as I've been in the past sometimes, I would never buy a PS3 and sell it for 4 times the resale value. Screwing huge corporations over is one thing, but screwing over another person just violates my moral code.

I'd have to say that this goes for the launch of all 3 next-gen systems. I was not impressed by the 360 at launch, and wasn't impressed until this past summer. Neither the Wii or PS3 launches impressed me either, which is why I'm waiting on the PS3. I figure a 7-9 month wait from launch like I did with the 360 should allow more and better apps to come out for the PS3. Plus, by then the kinks will be out as well.

ok, who wants to hear my ps3 story? It's long, but I think it's a good one.

Wednesday after class I plan on leaving Quinnipiac University in Connecticut to come back to Bergen County, New Jersey where I live to camp out at a Best Buy with a friend. Friend calls me and says there are already a lot of people there, so we don't want to take the risk waiting there. So I start looking for a new place.

Kmart says they are getting 4, and 2 guys are already waiting. I don't feel like playing it close, especially since my friend is an hour and a half - 2 hours away. I drive to the closest Best Buy. No one there. I am shocked. I go inside, and ask someone about it. They say they are not letting people camp out over night. Hmm, ok. Call up my friend, a few hours he meets me back at my school and we go over to the mall where the BB is.

Everything is closed, but we go inside and just look around until a security guard kicks us out. We go out and sit in my car in the parking lot until a security truck rolls around so we just head out. We don't want to leave just incase something changes, because we don't wanna get screwed somehow. Might not make a ton of sense, but we decide to sleep in the car in a hospital parking lot right across the street.

Next morning we get up, get some food, and get to the mall. Go to the bathroom, friend charges his phone, and he happen to be right next to the security office. We hear some guys talking to them about the ps3 launch. So we jump in the convo also, picking up things here and there. Supposedly they are going to let people line up at like 5 in the morning on Friday. We start thinking it is gonna be pretty insane.

So me and my friend, plus these 4 other guys that were there just head outside. There are a few other guys too, about 12 of us all together. Kinda make friends, exchange numbers to meet up later, and head out since we aren't allowed to wait there. Me and my friend just go inside the mall until 11 am and then go back to my school.

About 4 in the afternoon we go back. Walk around the mall a bit. EVERYONE is talking about the ps3. You can just feel the buzz in the air. I start getting pretty damn nervous. There are going to be so many fucking people here. We decide to head up to the circuit city parking lot which is probably the closest you can get to the mall without being on their property. There is one other car waiting there.

At about 10 or 11 that night, 2 of my roommates meet us there. By then, there are about 20 or 30 cars in the parking lot. A lot of people are getting screwed tonight. So we just chill, watch a movie. Every once in a while people will drive into the mall, people start following, they all get kicked back out.

At 3 oclock in the morning, security comes and blocks off the entrance to the mall that the circuit city parking lot leads into. There are still 2 other entrances, but you aren't supposed to be anywhere on mall property. Cars start lining up behind the security cars. We are not in a good spot, so there is no way we are getting there before 26 other people. We go and look for another way in. There is nothing standing out. We come back to the CC parking lot.

At 4:30 the buzz starts flowing again. We head out across the street of another entrance while one of my roommates stays in his car in the parking lot. We are on the phone with him and when he says the security cars are moving, we are gonna try to race over. At 10 to 5, when they said we can start lining up, he hangs up. 5 Minutes later he calls back and says they didn't let the cars go, but people just started running there.

Apparently people starting coming through the other entrances, and too many people to stop. We pull up, and there are at least a hundred people there, maybe 200.

Everyone is crowded up to the doors. Security inside yelling at people to back up. No one is moving. Cops come, start yelling, nada. Cops get tasers out, people fly the fuck back. Eventually, they open a door, and people just start sprinting in. I don't feel like getting trampled, so I just casually walk in after it is somewhat clear. Me, my friend, and one of my roommates walk in, and then they close the doors since there are already too many people inside. There are probably 75 people still outside. Since we went in the mall entrance and not the BB one, everyone is in the same huge mob outside the best buy, with the gates down. Here is one portion of the group:

So the stupid security guards are trying to make lines, but nothing is working. I am just standing around out of the action most of the time. They try to open the gates when they have a half assed line, but the mob is ready to just bum rush into the store. People are bitching about this and that. Fuck that, I say me and my friend have been there for 2 days.

So at 5:45 they decide they are doing a lottery system. At this point, that is my best bet. They give out the tickets, and we are in a huge crowd in the middle of the mall. The cops tell people to form an opening in the middle of everyone so the winners can walk through. Me and my friend are thinking they gotta be crazy, and no way we would walk through there with everyone knowing we won. This isn't greenwich, ct. It is pretty ghetto around here. Anyway, first winner called and people are congratulating him, cheering. Surprised me. 6th number, is me. I can't fucking believe it. I get to the front(not up the middle) and they take me a little further down the mall to where they have the real line set up.

I call my friend who is camping out in Florida to try to tell him. I turn around, and number 8 is my friend. Holy shit. How the fuck did we pull that off. We are in shock and can't believe our luck. 2 other guys that were with us Thursday morning also got picked. My other roommate inside didn't get anything, but fuck him, he wasn't there as long as us. We get taken into best buy, they pitch us some accessories, games, warranties and shit, and then we buy our ps3s. Cops escort us out, but there aren't that many people left outside, and no one is causing trouble. Get in the car, and drive home. Takes some pictures, throw those fools on ebay.

Wish I was smart enough to make them one day auctions, cuz they were going insanely high. Now i'll be lucky to get $1,200, even though that would make me happy. Anyway, I still can't believe the luck. Every once in a while I go check to make sure the PS3 is still there and that I wasn't dreaming it all. Hope you liked the story.

Yikes...........

Anyway, on Jim Cramer's Real Money. Someone asked about Sony/Nintendo stock, we all know that Nintendo stock is not really traded in the U.S..

Jim said watch out for Sony stock in general. But obviously not just for PS3 as that's only one product.

Then he goes on to say, "Well I've played both PS3 and Wii, and Wii is a much better system."

geez. im probably the one that went thru the least hassle on getting a PS3, so it was me and 3 other firends that wanted to get one, i was in class from 10:40 till 11:30, they call me at 10:50 to tell me to leave class cause we were heading out

i get to my friends house, and they tell me we're taking 2 separate cars to check out different places along the way to la quinta (sp?) the last walmart we were gonna check out. me and my one friend went to all of the walmarts on the list we had set up, all had at least 15+ people camping there so we were like fuck not gonna get one.

then my other 2 friends called us and told us a walmart in this hick town had 2 other people waiting in line and that they had 6 60GB PS3s in stock, so that meant me and my friend were gonna be #5 and 6, so we rushed over there and told them to call us if anyone got in line cause we were about an 40minute drive away, so we got there and luckily no one got in line, so i was the last to get the 60GB PS3

this was around 1:30pm the next person to show up for the 20GB was at 4pm and the last 3 showed up around 5pm. so after that the employees told us that anyone that called about the ps3 would be told that there were 10 in line and only 10 available and pretty much tell htem their chance on getting one was slim to none. and then everyone else that showed up without calling pretty much left cause they realize they only had a maybe on getting the PS3

so at night time around 7pm the temps dropped like crazy to like 40 outside, some guy had a friend drop off a portable heater, but that wasnt enough, the walmarts policy was to have everyone wait outside but eventually at 11:30pm they let us sleep on the mcdonalds floor cause it was closed. at 5am they kicked us out and it was back into the freezing cold. then at 1pm they were like "you guys have been here a long time, heres a bracelet and come back at 10pm to get in line again"

since we were about an hours drive away from where my friend lived, we just went to chilis and ate a good lunch, every meal i ate since then was mcdonalds.

ate lunch, then having no where to go, we just hung out at the walmart for the remaining 8 hours or so. come 9:00 we head to the layaway section where they said they were gonna hand out the PS3s.

so come 9:30 finally other people showed up, and the employees said that if any of the original 10 dont show up they have a chance on getting one, everyone showed up right at 10 except one dude, but he showed up right as they were taking role, so everyone else waiting just left. so we get our tickets and then waited until midnight to roll around.

midnight happens and we get our PS3s

we all bone out of there with the walmart stock employees escorting us out, outside we see this group in a scion tC hawking over us and this other dude looking like he was about to make trouble. so we all just jet out of there and head home.

the reason for that is because there were WAY more units available for the Wii than the PS3, for the PS3 if anyone saw like a big group of poeple and only like 10 units avialable they would just leave and not bother waiting.

Then he goes on to say, "Well I've played both PS3 and Wii, and Wii is a much better system."
i've played both too, whats his exact reason for saying the Wii is a much better system, can't just say things and not back it up.

and for me, i like the ps3, havent ran into any problems aside for once the controller randomly shut off.

and i know that its gonna be a while before the system gets better, look at the PSP at the inital release alot of its current features weren't there, but it wasnt until later updates that more features were released.

and i didnt even go thru a hassle at all to get it, unlike the person who got shot, or the riots that formed at the palmdale walmart

Ya, sleeeping on the floor at a McDonald's Wal-Mart is no hassle at all. I do it all the time with the wife. Quite relaxing actually.

^ I think the point dom is trying to make is that people should spend less time on their video game systems/PCs, or whatever, and actually do something.

Playing games once in a while is fine. I personally like to play a game or two of Madden per week myself to relax... but sitting in front of a machine and "rotting", just isn't healthy.
