Acura To Refresh TL For 2007,
Add Type-S
Acura is giving the Type S treatment to its popular TL lineup for 2007.
A revamped TL is slated to make the rounds this autumn, but for the first time ever, Acura is bringing along a new performance model with it. As is the way with other like-named Acuras, a modest power bump and understated aesthetic upgrades accompanies the Type-S designation.
In this case, the TL’s V-6 gets a .3-liter displacement bump (to 3.5 liters), which works out to 286 horsepower and 256 lb.-ft of torque – garden-variety models make do with a 3.2-liter V-6 good for 258 brake horsepower and 233 lb.-ft. The five-speed automatic with manual override has also been programmed to blip the throttle on downshifts.
(More details and insight after the jump!)
The suspension has been tightened up, and a different wheel/tire pairing help emphasize the more sporting mission of the Type-S, and the styling is marked-out by a mesh grille, four exhaust outlets, a modest spoiler, and various badges (a 2006-model TL is shown).
Inside, stainless pedals, sportier seats, and carbon fiber trim bits let owner and passenger alike know that they aren’t in just any TL.
Pricing and complete specifications aren’t available yet, but Royal Ford at the Boston Globe has the upper end of the TL’s lineup pegged at around $39k for model year 2007, so it’s a safe bet that the Type-S will base in that vicinity.
Interestingly Acura’s flagship RL has struggled to find buyers at its $49k asking price, and hefty discounts have ensued. Transaction prices for the 290 horsepower all-wheel drive sedan are hovering just above the TL Type-S’ projected price point, at around $43,500. While the RL is outwardly less sporting than the latter, it will be interesting to see if any inter-showroom competition results.

Agreed. It looks stupid as is. Almost wanna-be rice-burner feel.
Wheels would work on it if the front grill and all the chrome were matched charcoal color. It would actually look pretty cool that way!

I thought that the blue was growing on me too, but as I looked back at the early posts, I think that the most recent pictures may just be of better quality. The early pictures from the Boston Globe still look like some kind of possessed electric blue . I can't wait to see what colors are available on which models.

This is likely a moot point since I have doubts that the Type S is going on the deep-discount table right out of the gate, if at all.
My guess now is it will be priced close enough to a 335i to give one pause.

Thanks for answering the question abou the rearview camera. Hopefully it can be retrofitted by the dealer on my 06'.
I think the powercoated rims will look nicer in person or in motion. I remember thinking the new S2000 rims were ugly but after seeing them in person I changed my mind.

If I were to pick up a Type-S, I would be doing a lot of small changes (tail lights, wheels, body kit). I basically just want the new nav, new colors, and new engine.

Is it just me or are the exhaust tips different on the '07 TL base? I like the old ones better, and I can't tell if the corners of the rear bumper still have that shaved corner affect or are they curved now? Anyone?

I don't see what all the hype is about nav traffic... I mean it IS cool, but I'm sure as heck not going to spend $2000 to upgrade my 06 TL's trunk unit (assuming that will even be possible) to get it, when I can get graphical traffic reports that are just as good on my Verizon phone for $4 / mo.

My local AM station gives a live traffic report every 8 minutes ("Traffic on the 8's"), and it's real-time reports, not stale ones that have been processed through 2 or 3 agencies before getting transmitted to the Nav. So especially during rush hour, it's no sweat to catch the news and get frequent traffic updates.
I love technology, but NavTraffic is still half-baked and I personally wouldn't pay the extra to have it. Maybe later on when it gets better ...
Just my own opinion.

I have traffic with my Cobra nav 4500 w/Clear Channel traffic and is OK. Sometimes it shows traffic that has been cleaered up from about 1/2 hr ago. The same goes for the XM on the RL on my friends car, the delay is redicolous. The thing about my cobra nav, is that I get to update the software on it every few months. They are even deploying of where they have the speed trap cameras, stop light camera, and moving cameras in busy intersection (so you get warning before you approch them). I paid $60 a year and XM is $14 a month. XM is more $ and it recieves the same data from local towers. I hate the fact that they push XM and you don't have a choice of what service you want. In the near future this service would be free and much better, not from XM. XM is deploying the empty parking spaces at shopping malls and parking lots. Just another way for people to subscribe to XM and pay the $10 a month and then $4 traffic $3parking spot, etc...Traffic nav shouldn't be a reason to opt the more $.

What would you do???
I have a 2004 TL with no nav. Would you...
1) Buy a 2006 TL with NAV for $31,500
2) Buy a 2007 TL with NAV for more money
3) Buy a 2007 Lexus ES350
I cannot decide what to do. Please give me your opinion.

I was deciding between the '06 Acura TL and the '07 Lexus ES350 when I was car shopping awhile back. I looked at the TL first and then went to the Lexus dealership afterwards. While I was at the Lexus dealership, the exterior styling of the ES350 did nothing for me as it looked boring or not very sporty as compared to the TL so I ultimately bought the TL. One thing that I do like is the L-Finesse styling, it is very sleek looking.
