I’ve heard good things about the LG 27GN950. Only thing that sucks is no HDMI 2.1, but that really only sucks for console players.
but doubt there would be many titles that can hit 4K 120fps.
Thanks for the tip. Looks like the supply of this model is drying up, hopefully that means a replacement is coming soon. I'm sure the next model will have HDMI 2.1, and yeah not sure any PS5 games will ever reach 4k 144Hz, except maybe Bugsnax. But a 4k 144Hz gysnc HDR IPS display is basically perfection. Can't really get any better than that. I'd never have to upgrade again.
Yup that AND foundries are having trouble keeping up with demand. Huge semiconductor shortage for this year predicted. TSMC and lot of them already running at 100% capacity.
Also car production affected too since every car these days is a rolling computer.
So this definitely means very bad prices for GPUs and lot of other electronics...I noticed when we were shopping for TVs over holiday that prices seemed to be bit higher than earlier in the year....looks like I'm gonna just stay with my rig for now and wait 1-2 years before doing a big upgrade....
yeah the price increase sucks. this particular GPU is a top tier 3070. my buddy and i follow microcenter restocks. they only get 5-8 3080's per restock, per store.
he managed to get one, and let me know that there was a few top tier 3070s left. drove my ass over there in the middle of a work day to get one lol
if anyone is interested this guy ranked all the 3070/3080 cards
I want to buy a gaming PC mainly to get my son’s games off my wife’s laptops. I haven’t built a PC since Windows XP was a new release, so I’m WAY out of the game. I’ve read the last four pages, and I found some trends but not the clues I need to pick the best option for us.
It seems like people here prefer AMD processors to Intel. Is there is specific or technical reason?
The budget here is $1,000-1,300. Since I have no clue what I’m looking for my first inclination is to buy something off the shelf. I’m open to building myself if I can be convinced I can’t get something similar off the shelf, but the time savings of it being pre-assembled is a big plus for me.
Quick thoughts, links to good comparisons, and anything else is appreciated. I found the unit below on BestBuy with good reviews. (I’m sure my son would love the lights, but that’s not why I chose it. I swear. )Maybe it would be helpful to me if you could point out what hardware you would change and why, ‘cause again, I’m way behind the curve.
Building yourself would be very frustrating right now because of part shortages and jacked up GPU prices, so it's good that you are looking at pre-builts.
For a pre-built gaming rig for a kid I really don't think AMD vs. Intel matters. AMD is big in DYI because a couple years ago they came out with the Ryzen CPU that was cheaper compared to Intel with comparable performance.
I don't know much about the PC you linked from Best Buy. Loading a modern game from HDD is significantly slower than SSD. Also,1660Ti is now 2 years old. I think 3060 is the replacement for that. I think 1660Ti/3060 are considered 1080P cards. If you have a 1440P monitor you are going to need to step up your game.

Do you have any tips for getting one from Microcenter? It doesn't seem that they update the inventory for GPUs on their website so I don't see any way to reserve one. I live about 90 minutes from one so I can't just randomly show up for one. Can I call the store and have them hold one if it's in stock?

Very easy to use and super convenient to look at builds at various budget/price levels. You can build a VERY nice PC in the 1000-1300 range.
Now be ware...prices of ALL computer parts are higher than they were 6months ago due to shortage of semiconductor supply AND the kick-in of the Trump tariffs that were on pause but is now in full effect and there's no sign that the current white house is willing to ease up on the trade/tariff-war. So everything electronic is more expensive. Plus add in miners and scalpers....the video card prices are VERY high with very limited supply.
I was going to upgrade to the latest gen AMD processors (they are the best performance right now and better than Intel overall) and the latest NVIDIA GPUs but given the shortage of supply AND the tariffs not going away...I'm going to wait another 2 years before upgrading.

They'll laugh at you if you try to do a lay-away for a GPU that sells out almost the same day they are stocked.
I would call your nearest MC and ask what days they receive inventory (my local MC re-stocks on M, W, F). They may or may not get GPUs coming in and the employees don't know 100% either so you just have to keep showing up and trying and get lucky.
Their website is notorious for not being updated because with hot GPUs like the RTX 3000 series, they are selling out as quick as they are being stocked.
You either need to get lucky or take a day off/late come to work and get in the door when they open on the day they stock inventory

that bestbuy computer is not bad. definitely a good pick. building a computer yourself is not good right now. there are major supply/pricing issues. better to buy one off the shelf somewhere.
people are really nice. your best bet is to follow your local one (read rules). more than likely there will be people posting in there when they wait in line in the morning. they will probably post what they bought and the current inventory situation. that is how my friend got his, then he told me what was available while he was there
anyways chinese new year came around so yeah the supply is thinner than it has been ever before
edit: dont look at microcenter online stock. its not accurate. they want you to visit the store and see whats available. which is why word of mouth is best way to know what current inventory situation is
2nd edit: most microcenters took off their phone number listings so people would stop calling them
Getting any of the new GPU's is going to take a lot of patience. Took months of watching stock tracker streams and then I finally used hotstock.io to get an app notification when a 3080 was in stock. Even then, there was so much web traffic that Best Buy only gave me errors. Not thinking I would get anywhere I jokingly added a 3090 to checkout not thinking I would get very far.
Well......
Which then led to ordering a new case (triple slot wasn't fitting in an H210i), motherboard (wasn't putting an ITX in an ATX case), and a 3rd SSD because why not at that point. I'll have to get actual decent pics and post specs when I get a chance.

You can get it shipped without windows installed (IDK if they install it actually) and if you have an old Windows 7 product key from an OEM sticker or retail lying around you can install Windows 10 on new PC and use the old 7 product key to activate it saving your $100
what if i already used my old copy of windows 7 to get windows 10 on an old build.
If you got the 7 key it'll reinstall on a new build, you'll probably have issues if you continue to use your new build and the old build simultaneously though
theres plenty of shady websites that sell windows 10 keys for cheap. i use gamersoutlet and havent had any issues. even bought microsoft office from there. would recommend

@Yvuru Thanks a lot man I joined and it is super useful. Love the discord communities...looks like early this morning my local store had about 11 ppl camped out (in -7 weather mind you...windchill near -30 today....) and they got 5 Asus 3070s and a couple 6900s....
On a somewhat related question where do you go to find more discord channels/communities? I usually do reddit and have joined some but wanting to see how people find these discord channels....

my buddy invited me to that server. its way better than the other ones that alert you when an online item is available. kinda hard to beat the internet crowd. glad you like it
if you still interested, here's a youtuber that livestreams online drops. hes got a discord in the description. ive had 0 luck buying any of this stuff online, just a heads up

Oh cool. I haven’t used that old build since 2014 after switching to a 2012 i7 Mac mini.

Would not recommend. They eventually stop working after years. My boss did that once, the key worked for 3 years and then stopped. You can contact the seller and they’ll give you a new key but… that’ll eventually stop working too. That has never happened with OEM keys that come on the sticker stuck to each Windows 7 PC
