There's also non shady sites that sell MSDN keys, I buy mine from a private forum member and he gets it from MSDN,hopefully the shady site does the same so the keys are 'legit'

my understanding of these keys is that they come from a microsoft enterprise setup thing. the enterprise setup allows them to pump out legit keys for the purpose of them using it within the enterprise. but instead they just turn it around and sell them online for cheap

its definitely a gray area. YMMV

^yes. Microsoft makes you buy them in bulk. So they sell you 500 licenses but you only need 450, so you sell the other 50. Or they sell the product for much cheaper in "shithole" countries so the buy a copy of Windows for $15 in said shithole country and then sell it for $50 in the US.

They only offer an NVMe hard drive? The site is helpful to understanding the cost differences though.

I guess my #1 question comes down to a compromise for my budget. Do I go for the 7 series processor or the 1440p video card? Getting both pushes me over budget, but one or the other seems very doable.

if you click on customize, you can select NVMe only or NVMe + HDD.

Grabbed a couple shots (iPhone 12 Pro) after playing some FH4. Could post a GIF of the iCUE effects but I also don't have a way to effectively give a flash warning

As for specs:
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X (8C/16T)
Motherboard: GIGABYTE X570 AORUS Master
Memory: 32GB Crucial Ballistix RGB 3200MHz (will add another kit to fill RAM slots when I find it in stock)
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 FE
Boot: Samsung 980 Pro 500GB (PCIe Gen4)
Storage: 2x WD Black SN750 1TB (PCIe Gen3; in RAID 0 via motherboard)
Cooling: NZXT Kraken X53
Power Supply: Corsair RM850x White Edition
Case: Corsair iCUE 465x
Fans: (Front) 3x Corsair QL120; (Top/Rear) 3x Corsair LL120 (included with case)
Sleeved Cables: CableMod from Amazon
Peripherals: Razer Turret RGB Keyboard/Mouse
Headset: EPOS/Sennheiser GSP 370
"Monitor": Sony Bravia X900E until I have the space for a dedicated "battle station"

IMO you don't need an 8 core processor to play games. If it were me I'd go with the better graphics card.

Yeah, I saw that. I guess I was surprised there wasn’t an SSD option. I suppose I need to read up on NVMe.

Thanks. This is where I’m a novice because I only use computers for data processing, and for that more cores are better and you don’t need a good GPU for the command prompt.

NVMe is a SSD. It just uses a dedicated motherboard connection that can use up to 4 lanes of PCIe.

the older 2.5” SATA SSDs are much slower at like 550MB/sec vs NVMe can attain up to like 3-5000MB/sec (depending on PCIe gen 3 or 4)

SATA and gen3 NVMe SSD prices are roughly the same. So might as well get the faster one if your board can support it.

NVMe is an SSD but it doesn't use the standard SATA protocol to communicate and doesn't have the usualy 2.5in or 3.5in form factor of previous Sata hard drives. It communicates using PCI-Express which is much faster than SATA and it's shape is more similar to a RAM stick and it is connected directly to the motherboard similar to RAM but it is held in place with one screw. SSDs have become too fast for the SATA protocol to keep up with. When SATA 3 came out years ago SSDs had come out that maxed out the speeds of that protocol within months of its release. A SATA SSD from 2015 is basically just as fast as SATA SSD in 2021, any improvements are negligible. While NVMe SSDs have improved dramatically over that time and are now 5x to 10x faster than a SSD using the SATA 3.0 protocol.

However.... currently NVMe's have become so fast that other aspects of the computer are now the bottleneck, there's a lot of overhead in processing file transfers that really make the speed improvements from SATA SSD to NVMe SSD hard to notice day to day. LTT did a video on this with a blind test and their employees couldn't tell the difference between NVMe and SATA SSDs. That's starting to change though with the PS5 Xbox Series X and current gen graphics card. The newest consoles all comes with NVMe drives and these consoles were designed and now games are being written to take advantage of the massive speed increase by removing a lot of the overhead. The reason that the PS5 is a freak performance wise is their NVMe and the ability it has to pull game data directly off of the NVMe at 7GB/s and send it directly to the GPU without any of the overhead, a SATA SSD maxes out at around 550MB/s (12x slower), and a normal hard drive is like 100MB-200MB/s at best.

Microsoft has this same feature it's called DirectStorage, future PC games will be able to load directly off of the NVMe and this will basically eliminate load times in a game and allow for high texture graphics to be sent to the GPU insanely fast. The downside for PCs is that every gaming PC doesn't have one of these yet so developers may not design their game around this feature, but on the other hand all the new consoles have this capability so you might as well design for it on the Xbox and then enable it for PC as well.

So if I were you I'd go 1TB NVMe over 500GB NVMe + 2TB HDD, and get a Nvidia 30 series GPU if you can since they can take advantage of the DirectStorage feature, RTX 20 series can't

It seems like people here prefer AMD processors to Intel. Is there is specific or technical reason?

The budget here is $1,000-1,300. Since I have no clue what I’m looking for my first inclination is to buy something off the shelf. I’m open to building myself if I can be convinced I can’t get something similar off the shelf, but the time savings of it being pre-assembled is a big plus for me.

Quick thoughts, links to good comparisons, and anything else is appreciated. I found the unit below on BestBuy with good reviews. (I’m sure my son would love the lights, but that’s not why I chose it. I swear. )Maybe it would be helpful to me if you could point out what hardware you would change and why, ‘cause again, I’m way behind the curve.

@oo7spy

I saw this deal on reddit, slightly over budget but on the iBuyPowerPC own website, they have a configurator....5% off if deferred shipping: https://www.ibuypower.com/Store/AMD-...n-Configurator

Better to buy direct than get from BB.

If you can swing for 1500-1600...you can basically get the Ryzen 5 5600x (basically THE best gaming CPU for the money) and the RTX 3060Ti, 32GB RAM, liquid cooler for CPU....huge step up for not THAT much more.

Why are direct from Zotac GPUs so expensive?

$479 for a RTX 3060
$689 for a RTX 3070
$899 for a RTX 3080

Is it really only the import tax? that seems like a huge mark up.

I ask because they had a small drop an hour or so ago. Website was getting DDOS, but I was able to get a 3060 in my cart but decided against it due to the price.

I don't think Nvidia has much control over what their OEMs sell their cards for and company charging high prices when demand is high is how the system is supposed to work

That 3060 is a good deal compared to my used 2060 Super which currently has a $465 bid on it

I think I’d rather wait for other OEMs, 500 or so could get me a 3060ti which a lot of the reviews say is a better deal for the price.

@Mizouse - good luck with your GPU search man!

So I was going to hold off upgrading mine when prices went up and everything is out of stock...but then I'm reading that the foundries will likely have continued shortage until at LEAST 2022....so next year...we still will likely have shortages and I wonder if this might also delay next gen stuff (AMD Zen4, NVIDIA RTX 4000 series, etc.) So maybe this gen stuff will last a bit longer than before...so actually looking like I might build a system after all....buddy and I might be doing the build after all this year. Gonna try to line up on a thursday night and get stock from microcenter.

thanks man, no worries.

We've got our local microcenter scoped out. Hopefully should get a card on friday in may when i have a day off work anyway.

Also they said microcenter has a build your PC thing where for $150 they build one for you (you pick out all the parts of course) and they reserve a few RTX 30 cards in the back for people who are buying complete systems in one go. So that's another route.

We'll camp out starting night before and should be #1/2 in line with that.

Also was just there 2 days ago and they did have some 5600x in the back (not on the shelf) that you can just ask for....so looks like GPU is the main thing of course....

Yeah being in california is gonna be insane..another level of demand outstripping supply....honestly I don't know ppl can get RTX 30 at MSRP if you dont have access to microcenter....the online buying is insane....but best of luck to ya man!!! maybe more stock in the upcoming weeks....

I know right....ugh....$500....hoping for the EVGA at $399!

So does newegg have a secondary selection if the chosen people for some reason didn't purchase what they got in the shuffle later in the day? I'm guessing they send another round of emails if somehow they still have stock? (which I highly doubt any will be in stock....)

From the last shuffle I entered, they just send an email saying "sorry you weren't picked" "you lose, you get nothing"

There is talk about Newegg switching to the shuffle system for future drops as a way to deter bots.

i'm personally following the youtube channel https://www.youtube.com/user/fixitfixitfixit
You don't need to actively watch the channel, it makes a sound when there is a drop.

Also following his Twitter with post notifications turn on that provide the product link.

if you discord, you could use his discord to also get notices and link.

They are also anticipating Bestbuy will have a drop on Tuesday Mar 9th, 10AM - 12PM EST.

They last had a big drop on 2/25.

It’s ridiculous how over priced everything is. Tempted to just get a GT 710 for like $40 until I can get a proper GPU.

or better yet, would an ATI Radeon X1950 XT still work with windows 10 and current gen CPU? I still have that from my Intel Core 2 Duo e6600 build that’s sitting in my garage.
