Apple: iPhone News and Discussion Thread
OK thanks. I saw an ad for that in yesterday's Best Buy section in the newspaper. Does it require home interweb connection? I saw something about Wi-Fi and it looks like there are a couple models available. Will check it out, thnx.
If you don't have home internet, you're looking at doing something off the phone.
This is my case. I deliberately do this to avoid the distraction of the interweb when I'm away from work.
Or if you're serious about the Google Voice route:

Its kinda like Magic Jack but it uses Google Voice. Only problem is the future of Google Voice. Google is supposed to let everyone know whether or not calling will remain free to the US and Canada in the near future. Even if it doesn't remain free, I'm sure it'll be a cheaper price than what's out there.

If you make the phone call from a browser or if you create an account with one of the numerous VoIPs out there to forward your Google Voice to there then it doesn't.
$50-$100 on eBay or Craigslist. You can convince AT&T to give it to you for free as well. If you have logs of complaints tell them about it.

iPhone 4s is ordered and will be at the house when I get home next weekend (a separate
)
Since I am new to iPhone, what apps/accessories do you all recommend?
I've seen quite a bit of lists, but most are from CNET or Engadget and I'm just curious what "real" people use.

Anyone have a 4 that gets abnormally hot on a daily basis? Im getting annoyed with mine. It has to be the battery, because its coming from that area.
Should i just take it to the apple store and see whats up?
also, sometimes i cant hear the person on the other line. I did a 10 test experiment and 4/10 times i could hear my gf. any fix for that?

I see you bought a micro tower but start logging your calls to AT&T about service complaints, log your dropped calls, then call AT&T president's office (or email them and they will call you) to say you at doing this and are reporting it to the FCC. A guy called me back and waived my ETF because my service was so bad. I am sure if you mention a micro tower, they will send it then you can sell it.

Interesting, some people are saying their iPhone is getting 3G service on tmobile.
There are over one million iPhones using the T-Mobile network. To use the Apple branded device, one would have to complete the jailbreak and unlocking process. Before T-Mobile offered micro-SIM cards, some elbow grease was also required. The T-Mobile SIM card had to be trimmed to fit into the iPhone’s micro-SIM slot.
Updating your iPhone’s firmware is also a royal pain. Jailbreaks are not always immediately available following a new update. This means those using an iPhone on the T-Mobile network will always be a step or two behind everyone else.
One of the final drawbacks is speed. An unlocked iPhone is capable of 3G speeds but not on T-Mobile’s network. The best you could hope for is Edge, that is, until now.
According to a few reports, some users have experienced 3G speeds on their unlocked iPhones. The unlocked handsets are picking up the 3G signal utilizing the 1900MHz band. Aside from the iPhone, other T-Mobile devices, such as the Samsung Galaxy models, can take advantage of the higher speeds as well.
The altered areas are part of T-Mobile’s plans for an improved HSPA+ 84Mbps network. Those lucky enough to live in those pockets are noticing iPhone friendly speeds faster than AT&T’s 3G network with a 7.92Mps download and 1.8Mbps upload rate.
For now, the improved connection is limited to some parts of Nevada and California. Everyone else will have to wait until T-Mobile rolls out the HSPA+ 1900MHz spectrum across the rest of the country. If they do, it won’t be everywhere. T-Mobile only needs 1900MHz in certain areas to achieve their goal of 84Mbps.
The T-Mobile improved frequency support doesn’t guarantee an official plan to carry the iPhone. T-Mobile would need 1900MHz support in more areas. Apple, on the other hand, would need to implement 1700MHz 3G support, a move that won’t likely happen until the next iPhone surfaces in 2012.
Those loyal to both Apple and T-Mobile will have to hold out a little longer for 3G speeds. If you would like to know your current iPhone’s speed, head over to Speedtest on your mobile browser or download their free app.
If you are on T-Mobile and have a contract-free unlocked iPhone in hand, and if you’re getting 3G speeds, why not drop your thoughts about it on our Facebook and Google+ pages? Is it good compared to AT&T or Verizon or just meh?

And...The fruitloops win a small victory:

The ruling, by the United States International Trade Commission, is one of the most significant so far in a growing array of closely watched patent battles being waged around the globe by nearly all of the major players in the mobile industry, reflecting the heated competition among them, especially as Android phones gain market share. At the heart of these disputes are the kind of small but convenient features that would cause many people to complain if they were not in their smartphones. For example, the case decided Monday involves the technology that lets you tap your finger once on the touchscreen to call a phone number that is written inside an e-mail or text message. It also involves the technology that allows you to schedule a calendar appointment, again with a single tap of the finger, for a date mentioned in an e-mail.
