There's the details. I can't find the article I read originally, they must have left out the details about ATT not forcing you to switch. However, I don't think we can count on this being around for that long.

But nobody will be forced to switch. If people are happy with their current plan, they can keep it, which I expect many to do. In fact, AT&T says that people "are not required to switch to the new plans if they renew their contract or switch to another smartphone. However, if they switch to one of the new plans, they will not be able to go back to their old, unlimited plan." The only downside is that legacy iPhone plans won't get tethering, so there are some things to consider for some.
I think everyone here was aware of the bolded bit. If you can find the original article, I'm sure we'd all appreciate it. I'm not due for renewal for two years (if at all), but it would be nice to know.
Sorry sly you got it wrong. When I got the iPhone 4 I was grandfathered in from my iPhone 3g for the 5gb "unlimited" plan. I've since gone and manually downgraded to the 2gb plan. Yes I know I can't got back to 5gb nor do I want to.
I'd urge you people to go to the at&t site and check out your wireless data usage, I gaurantee you it's a lot lower than you think it is and 2gb is still a lot of data.
For exampla this is my data usage for the past 10 months.

Nowhere even close to 5Gb so why pay an extra $5 a month for it. I came kinda close last month -still 600mb short or about 2 months of data for me- cause I downloaded a 500mb file. Also I do have mywi and use my iPhone to tether my laptop or iPad from time to time. So I'm saving $5/mo and if I were to go over it's only $10 for the next Gb but that's probably not going to happen and if it did occasionally I'd still be saving more money in the long run

In the my usage summary box click on the phrase "view past data usage"
I'd like to see if mine is normal or below average. Anyone else care to post theirs. It can become a kinda who has the bigger e-penis thing!

It's surprising, I peaked at 1.0 and 1.3 over April and May. But otherwise, it's been consistently below .5GB since December. Something to think about in the future, but I'm not too bothered right now.
I'm not sure it's worth the $5 to downgrade and not be able to get it back, though. On the other hand, downgrading from the FamilyTalk 700 plan to the 550 plan would save $8.50 a month. The only downside is we lose the 6685 rollover minutes we'll never use.
That's probably the better option. We're halfway through the billing cycle and we've used 59 anytime minutes.

If you 11 months out of the year stayed below 2gb which by looking at your past data it's very easy to do you'd save $50. If one month out of the year your went over by a few hundred mb it'd be a $10 charge making that month $35 for a total yearly cost of $310 while a year at $30/mo is $360 for the same data and if you never went over which seems like a hard thing to do it'd only cost you $300 which is a savings of $60 a year.
hmmmmm Cochese whatever could you buy for $60/yr!?!?!?!? I know how about Xbox Live Gold membership!
I must say I do find it interesting that you're defending paying $5/mo more while you were bitching about the less than $1 a month increase in Xbox Live Gold membership. So just switch to the 2gb plan and Xbox live is completely paid for even at the new prices!

For example I'd say my household is far above average but as an example using the traffice meter built in to my router it says that yesterday alone there was almost 15GBs of data transferred between it. the vast majority of that is Netflix streaming.
3G is supplemental coverage, it gives you coverage everywhere but it's not supposed to be your only connection. You're supposed to use wifi when you can but even if you can't 2gb is still a lot for a mobile device.
Is there any reason to go to 4.1? I'm still on 3.x mainly because I have some apps that I don't want to go away, if you know what I mean
one of which happens to be TomTom
also, I followed Sly's advice.... but my iPhone transferred all the texts from my old iPhone. Just had to delete 2.5 years worth of text convos, one by one
Is there a fast way to do it, like select all?

then click on the red circle that shows up next to the number/contact, and then delete.
then again, dont know if thats new with 4.0 or whatever, but i dont think it is. iirc it was there in 3.x.x
