Winamp just released their Music Player for Android. It got pretty good reviews so far for a beta:

Actually most phones in the market are underclocked for battery purposes. But the cool thing about these mods are they also allow undervolting and underclocking in addition to the overclocking. So you actually get better battery life and better performance than a stock phone.

For those who want the WebOS cards carousel, check out the Itching Thumbs app:

I remember Cyanogen and his team found this feature coded into Android since Donut and I guess Google never used it because they didn't want to get sued by Palm. Probably want to grab this app before Palm decides to take it down. lol.

Seems to work pretty well when Disabling the Double click to activate feature. Oh cool you can even add widgets at the bottom and change the shortcuts and home screen...Just gotta long press and hold.

Okay I don't know how I missed this cool app but for those with Vlingo, they released Vlingo In Car beta a couple of days ago:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vqs8X...layer_embedded
You can initiate a command by saying "Hey Vlingo" then you tell it what to do without having to touch the phone. It even answers simple questions like "What time is it?" and I'm sure a bunch of others. It can also read incoming notifications like texts so you don't have to look at the phone. You can change the way it greets you too. Gonna play with this some more.

Changing LCD density
So here's a cool mod for those who are rooted with the bigger screens (i.e. 3.7" onwards). You can change the pixel density size of the screen so it looks more high def. I just changed my pixel density to 200 ppi and the screen estate looks way better now! I am now using a 6 x 5 configuration on my homescreen using Lancher Pro and it looks awesome. I can fit more onto the screen without it being too small and the increased room is very noticeable during browsing as well!
2 ways to do it (Both ways require ROOT):
***Remember to backup your build.prop just in case anything happens.***
1. LCD Density changer (Not free but its a simple app)2. Edit the build.prop yourself found in the /sytem folder.
If you did it right, the screen size should look smaller now! Some apps seem to have issues with the change in resolution but all it does it makes the app run in a smaller window.

- Use Root Explorer or any file manager that can navigate to your system/build.prop file
- Navigate to ro.sf.lcd_density
- Change the value to whatever you like. The lower the value the smaller the text size. 200 seems to be the sweet spot for most phones but you can play around with the number to see what works best for you.
- Save and reboot
OR
- ADB pull the build.prop file
- Use a Text Editor (preferably Notepad++) and navigate to the line that reads:
"ro.sf.lcd_density" - Change the "ro.sf.lcd_density" value to anything you like. The lower the value the smaller the text size. 200 seems to be the sweet spot for most phones but you can play around with the number to see what works best for you.
- Save the file and ADB push it back

Okay scratch that. I just went to 180 LCD density. Now I'm on a 6 x 6 grid. Liking the high res look a lot. Some apps aren't accomodating to the size change though but not a big deal for me.

Looks like Gingerbread is coming soon! Usually when they do these things, the source code gets dropped a few days after.

Android Fans Rejoice: The Gingerbread Man Just Landed At Google HQ
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vskBj...layer_embedded
Yes, the rumors were true: the newest version of Android, codenamed Gingerbread, is imminent. How do we know? Because there’s a new, massive treat that just arrived at Google headquarters: the Gingerbread Man.
Google hasn’t said anything about the release of the new version of the OS, but they’ve posted a video to the Android developer YouTube channel that shows the arrival of this much-anticipated treat. He joins a variety of other gigantic sweets, including an eclair, a cupcake, and a bowl of frozen yogurt.
Each of these desserts represents one of the code names of Android OS, and they’ve historically been positioned in front of the Android building on Google’s campus a few weeks before the company releases the source of the latest version of Android. In other words, expect some big Android news soon.
Little is known about the upcoming release, other than that the Android team has paid a lot of attention to improving the user experience. Aside from a few blurry screenshots, little has been seen of the new version, but we don’t have to wait much longer.

Open Spare Parts. Uncheck "Compatibility Mode". Reboot.
Most apps should now scale properly! I had to change my dialer to Dialer One (http://www.appbrain.com/app/dialer-one/kz.mek.DialerOne) as well because it wasn't scaling but the app is pretty awesome compared to stock Dialer so its a plus.

Update on my EVO
First of all... has anyone had an HTC (white with green letters) screen pop up every once in a while and then you get a "loading' screen? That has been happening for the last few days and it starting to bother me!
OK. the good stuff...
1. The self adjusting screen font is pimp and for my needing bi-focal self, it is a boon!
2. Cannot say enough about the speed of this phone, other than my previous gripe.
3. There is an app for everything and most are free.
4. the on screen keyboard is great, but the suggested words are aggravating so i keep it turned off... yes, i need to get swype, but my son has my laptop tied up most of the time with school work... he crashed his with his brother surfing pOrn sites.
5. battery is still superb( I keep the gps and bt and 4g off unless I need them)... if i forget to charge it before bed its still on in the morning... i dont suggest this... turn it off and let it sleep...lolz ... also, the live wallpapers have not significantly affected my bat life... my fav is the matrix code.
6. takes great pics and vid... it also comes on very qwikly so you dont miss your pics... I took the crazy van pic with my phone on a whim...
7. I have had it almost a month and its a keeper. Sent in for my rebate, so now I am looking for my cash in the mail... last time it took a month or so...
8. voice search is good, voice dialer sux.
9. Vlingo is pretty pimp.
10. i actually use the kick stand, i thought it was silly at 1st, but not anymore...
11. wish it had a cool graphic world clock like the palm treo 680
12. 4G is really not much faster than 3G and it grabs your battery by the.... well you understand. It does allow you to surf and talk and vid talk... but i was able to vid talk with a friend via tango on 3G.
12. screen resolution is clean and sharp... I still dont know which screen I have since my rig is not rooted yet.
Thats all I can think of for now... been doing paper work in my office for about 4 hours, so i am hella tired...

So a follow up for those who want to try the LCD density change without messing with the build.prop yet:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=785136
It still requires root but this app is free and it changes the resolution "on the fly". (It does a soft reboot when applying the change in resolution).
The app is very safe because the resolution doesn't stick when you reboot. So if it didn't work for you, all you have to do is turn off the phone or reboot. The app didn't work for me but give it a try to see how the resolution trick will make your screen look amazing. (I probably just didn't wait long enough for the phone to reboot into the new resolution)

So another app recommendation. WidgetLocker. Its not free but its awesome.
http://www.appbrain.com/app/widgetlo...w.widgetlocker
What does it do? It allows you to change your lockscreen and even add shortcuts and widgets to it. It has the option for the Eclair, Sense UI, iPhone lockscreens and you can move them around the screen as well if you don't like where the unlock tab is at.
Here's how I have mine set up at the moment:
Widgets/Shortcuts:
1st Row: Extended Control Widget for easy access of the Wifi, Bluetooth, GPS, AutoSync, Brightness, Airplane Mode on the top widget.
2nd, 3rd and 4th Row: TypoClock (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=814054)
5th Row: Lock/Unlock, Vlingo InCar shortcut, Normal, Vibrate, Silent toggle
6th Row: Pandora
So without unlocking the phone, I have access to all of these! Everything is customizable so you can change every widget on the screen. The only thing missing is the resizing of the widgets which will probably come in future versions. But definitely check it out.
P.S. The background I'm currently using looks amazing on a Super AMOLED screen. It makes it look like a real texture when looking at the phone. Its probably due to the contrast between the grays, black and the white colors but its very nice.

Our school is keeping us busy as well. Always gotta drive all over the place and we're midway through the semester so things are starting to pick up with more papers, PE exams and other busy work. Was planning to go home for a few days but I don't think its gonna happen cause they just piled a bunch of stuff for us next week.
I had an OR rotation the other week and it was pretty cool. I've always wanted to check out the OR since my high school days and I finally got the chance, so I was really happy about that. I got to see some cool procedures and definitely changed my perspective about surgery overall especially with all the cool toys and gadgets they have nowadays that I didn't even know existed. (The Morcellator was pretty awesome.)
Me and my partner did get chewed up by one of the surgeons though for no reason other than being Caribbean medical students. :shakehead Needless to say, I reported him to our school, although I don't think they could do much to him other than to warn the other students not to shadow him. Was expecting it way later down the line of my med school experience but I guess some people just choose to be ignorant and have their god complexes. The other surgeons were really cool though. They ran us through their procedures beforehand and the anestheologists were teaching us how to sedate and intubate patients. I'm supposed to get another rotation in a few weeks but we don't get our schedule until the Wednesday before the week starts so we're just running through the semester like a blind horse. lol.

Yeah the app is pretty awesome. Its so flexible. Pretty much anything on the phone can be attached to the lockscreen. So you don't even have to unlock the phone to get to app or function you want.
The states are good. Definitely not missing the island. lol. Just missing the food variety back from home though. Miami has a lot of Cuban/Latin, American restaurants but lacking in other cultures really. They have Asian restaurants but they're all almost Americanized with their fusion crap.

I know med school seems crazy, but hang in there mang! The zaniness helps you do a better job of picking a specialty you will want to wake up early to for the remainder of your life... a pretty serious choice!
There is no excuse to for staff to be rude to students... the staff is rude to the residents all the time, but hardly, if ever to the students... plus, you guys are at the clinical stage of the game... why act a fool with yall? You are the peeps who will eventually make or break their program... The larger the ego the smaller the "unit"... that's what I always say!
Thanks again for the update... I am reliving med school thru you and my best friend Rico simultaneously

And yeah, I know its expensive, get the trial for 30 days, so you can see if you like it...and then later, your residency program will most likely pay the program for you... mine (JPS) bought all of us palm PDA's and the programs we needed for them

I finally decided to install the new Official Froyo update for the HTC Magic on my Google Ion. This thing is faster than Cyanogen's. I'm not sure what they did to make it faster but I'm not even using Compcache or Swap on this yet and its very usable. As far as I can see, the only thing missing is the Live Wallpapers which was also gone from Cyanogen's. Otherwise, its a fully functional Froyo build.
I also did the LCD density change on the phone. Looks nicer with the higher res look. Keeping this phone as a backup just in case my Galaxy S breaks again.

The PlayStation Phone

It's hard to believe that what we're looking at is real -- but we assure you, the picture above is in fact the PlayStation Phone you've long been waiting for. As we reported back in August, the device you see is headed into the market soon, likely boasting Android 3.0 (aka Gingerbread), along with a custom Sony Marketplace which will allow you to purchase and download games designed for the new platform. The device snapped up top (and in our gallery below) is sporting a 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8655 (a chip similar to the one found in the G2, but 200MHz faster), 512MB of RAM, 1GB of ROM, and the screen is in the range of 3.7 to 4.1 inches. Looking almost identical to the mockup we hit you with this summer, the handset does indeed have a long touchpad in the center which is apparently multitouch, and you can see in the photos that it's still bearing those familiar PlayStation shoulder buttons. For Sony buffs, you'll be interested to know that there's no Memory Stick slot here, but there is support for microSD cards.
The particular model in these shots is still in prototyping mode. As such, the unit doesn't have a custom skin (not even SE's Timescape design seen on the Xperia devices), and is said to be rather buggy. We're digging into more facts as we speak, but it's likely that much of what we reported earlier is still accurate, and though the device could still be headed for a 2010 release, 2011 is looking much more realistic. Still, there's a lot of time between now and the holidays... so keep your fingers crossed!
