Yep. My Galaxy S gets pretty hot as well especially when I have Bluetooth, GPS, 3G, on the phone and navigating all at the same time. It gets so hot I can burn my hand if I leave it long enough. Good thing bluetooth is hands free. lol. I think phones are just too thin nowadays that they can't dissipate the heat properly especially with the faster chips.

Oh yeah, I don't know if you saw this:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=819470

The XDA people hacked the new YouTube app to work on Eclair. Its working perfectly on my Galaxy S. I don't see why it wouldn't work on other Eclair phones but don't quote me on it. As always backup your old app first!

All you have to do is uninstall the old YouTube.apk and clear its data. Then install the new YouTube.apk and you have the brand new YouTube app. Its pretty slick as it can play in portrait mode now.

My phone has read out @ 116.5 degrees F. The back plate has nearly burned my hand. This only happens if I'm doing heavy usage. If it even gets that hot I have it set to shut down and reboot.

my Evo has stayed pretty cool... It gets warm if I am charging it while I am using it, but I wouldn't call it hot... My Pre used to get way hot and so did my HTC TP1

Always the first thing I do on any new ROM flash. Use titanium backup to do it the easy way and you can back the app up with it as well just in case you need the app again. It has a chuck norris mode for such occasion.

Check out appbrain.coms Sign up and sync it with your phone. It makes suggestions based on what you have installed and its easier to navigate than the android market.

I posted some apps earlier in this thread as well. Start from my post #208 and go from there:

https://acurazine.com/forums/showpos...&postcount=208

XDA also has a page for recommended apps:

You should install the new official Froyo update. I think it requires the death SPL so just read up before attempting as it can brick the phone. It works pretty good on my Ion.

I'd keep the Epic, it may not be quite as thin but it's pretty thin. The screen is just soo much nicer and it's still faster then the Evo.

LOL... with the case on my EVO, its prob about the same thickness and weight... When I take the case off to clean the edges, I am always reminded how thin and light the phone is... but alas, it cannot protect itself and I have jacked a few phones with drops... also, the EVO screen requires a protector, while the EPIC does not... and the EPIC has a screen... which I can honestly say I have not seen in person, but I highly respect the said opinions here.

I'm totally jumping ship from Iphone to Android when the PSP phone launches.

It makes the most sense since it combines two items use frequently.

AT&T Samsung Captivate $99.99 /w 2 year agreement; good deal?

My LG VU is ruined (long story), so I need to get another phone. I wasn't too impressed with the LG VU after I saw how much of a POS the actual phone was.

The only phone that caught my eye was the Samsung Captivate (don't really want an i-phone again). I've played with it in the store extensively I love the interface and the swipe thing is actually pretty damned accurate.

I was planning on buying it outright to avoid a contract (I hate contracts), but my local store has this phone for $99.99 with 2 year agreement plus my job has 17% discount on the service but of course to get the discount, I have to sign a new two year agreement.

On Ebay these things are selling between $300 - $400 used, and of course its $500 in the store. So I'm thinking what the hell, I don't see myself leaving AT&T anytime soon and I like the service so it looks as if I'm going to be with them at least two years anyway. So should I jump on this deal?

If you like it, why not?

I don't see why people are so against contracts. It's not like you don't need to pay for monthly service if you don't get one. Plus it's not 10 grand to break your contract, it's usually less than $100 if you are really that upset with it. Then you can sell the phone.

As far as Android phones are concerned on AT&T, the Captivate will probably be their top of the line Android phone for a while since they're making a push for Windows Phone 7. I'm using the international Galaxy S variant, i9000T (and at one point had the i9000M), on AT&T, which costs more but has the front facing camera and looks like the T-Mobile version. Otherwise, the Captivate, Vibrant and all other Galaxy S phones are the same thing. I really like the phone but I don't use the stock TouchWiz UI because I'm not a fan of it. Its too iPhone-esque which is not what I wanted. Luckily, its very easy to replace and doesn't require any rooting with the many home desktop replacements. The screen is excellent especially for watching videos and the phone is really light. Froyo is supposed to come officially at the end of November and I guess we'll find out soon if Samsung will get Gingerbread on it. Battery life, I'm averaging about 9 hours before I hit the 15% battery warning on average use (browsing the web, reading emails, making a few phone calls, watching YouTube vids, playing a few games).

The only complaints people seem to have with the phone is the GPS which seems to jump around randomly probably due to interference from signals. (There was a patch released recently to fix this problem but I think it only fixed the fast positioning but not maintaining the position. Although some people are saying it fixed both.) On my i9000T I sometimes experience the GPS jump around but only on Google Maps. (For some reason, I didn't experience it on my i9000M but I only had that phone for a week so it could be a hardware issue?) Other GPS apps like Copilot have good enough software to eliminate the spikes from the GPS though as I don't have any issues when using Copilot instead of Google Maps. With that said, if GPS is not your main priority, its not a deal breaker. Also, you can use an external GPS Bluetooth receiver if it really bugs you that much and you can get a very good one for around $15 on eBay. Its still very usable though and it doesn't bother me that much. But its something to keep in mind.

@Gibs. As far as the contract goes you are right. To me, I think its more mental than anything; I just don't like the feeling of a company having me by the balls with a contract. But yeah if I do get pissed off with them, I'll just cancel the contract which which would more than likely be less than what the phone costs outright today; and like you said not something crazy like $10,000.

So I guess in reality if things don't work out, it would just be like me buying the phone outright in the first place. But on the other hand, if I bought the phone outright and stayed with AT&T for 2 years anyway, then actually I am throwing away $400. When I think about it like that, it seems the contract is the way to go.

------------------------------------------

@CGFeb good things to point out. I don't see myself using the GPS feature that much, since I don't go much of anywhere, and when I do I have the GPS in the car. It would be icing on the cake if it worked better, but like you said not a deal breaker for me personally. The camera does lack a flash though, which is a small concern, but I don't really plan on taking that many pictures with it so that shouldn't be a problem but maybe a mild inconvenience at times. The inability to video conference doesn't concern me, (heck I don't even use my webcam )

My main concern with the phone was the touch screen responsiveness and quirks. After dealing with the LG VU I vowed never to get another touch screen phone, but the Captivate's screen is actually pretty good. The I-phone's touch screen has always been good to me as well, which is one reason why I was so disappointed with the one on the VU. The VU's inaccurate touch screen and tiny onscreen keyboard made it virutally impossible to surf the web on especially with Opera Mini. I finally just gave up after a while as it ended up being more trouble that it was worth. The only good thing about the VU really was the MobileTV, but when I cancelled that due to a poor signal in my office building, I really started to hate the phone. So now I guess here's my chance to get a better smart phone that I can use for more than just calling people. (i.e. Azine) :biggin:

The Galaxy S touchscreen is excellent. Its very sensitive sometimes too sensitive but in a very good way. And I'm the same way with contracts...I don't like them because I change phones too many times for a contract to be beneficial for me even though I've had Cingular/AT&T ever since. Plus I get to keep my cheaper data plan. lol.

Did you flash the separate GApps file? For CM6 you need to flash two things. The CM6 ROM first then the GApps. Its for copyright reasons. Cyanogen was served a cease and desist back in the day and the separate GApps was their workaround.

So the flashing sequence would be:

1. Boot into recovery. Wipe the system data, cache, everything
2. Flash CM6 RC1
3. Reboot
4. Let the phone load normally
5. Reboot back to recovery
6. Flash GApps - DONT wipe
7. Reboot

So the flashing sequence would be:

1. Boot into recovery. Wipe the system data, cache, everything
2. Flash CM6 RC1
3. Reboot
4. Let the phone load normally
5. Reboot back to recovery
6. Flash GApps - DONT wipe
7. Reboot
You know, I always flash the GApps immediately after flashing the ROM, don't even boot into the ROM first, just flash one after the other and I've never had a problem.

They have been tough to come by, couldn't even get them on the CM website, scour XDA, you'll find them.

Either way will work. I alternate between the two and never had any problems doing either. The most important thing to do is wipe when switching to a new ROM.
