Android: Phone News and Discussion Thread
As a photographer it drives me nuts to see people taking these wrong, and then having it blamed on the OS for being a new feature. It's not possible to do it perfectly by hand (you need a panorama head on a tripod calibrated to the lens and camera), but you can get close. It is the reason for all the wavy mismatching stitching I've seen uploaded from Nexus 4's recently on G+ and in reviews. The panorama stitching is much more forgiving of lens drift the farther away you are from your scene. If you are indoors, it is crucial you not move the lens.
One simple step: The lens must remain in the exact same physical location in space as the phone is rotated around it for the different photos.
Edit: Or more simply, rotate your body around the camera and not the camera around your body.
Edit2: The effect is called Parallax[1]

The Tiny Planet filter is pretty fun to use with the Photospheres. Didn't understand it until I started playing with it more. Lol.
Also if you guys are interested in some Photospheres, check out

Remember if you have the 4.2 Gallery, you can download the raw images to your device and you can pan around within the Gallery app.

i see, so keep the phone in the same spot and pivot around the phone and not you.
But that seems hard to do when you angle it lol, i'll try it tomorrow outside. As i did it indoors in tight rooms lol

Yea, I can get smaller photos to turn out good, but If I try to do a 360* shot, the stitching looks horrible. As previously stated, its like the phone needs to be on a tripod.
If you geotag your Photosphere, you can share it to Maps:

Do you know if theres a way to get the stock lockscreen on a TW ROM?? I dont want other ROM's cause i dont think they are stable yet, and some touchwiz features are nice. I already have stock launcher, but i also want the stock lockscreen. Just wondering if anyone of you know how

So I took back my spare Galaxy S (i9000T) from my brother now that he's using an S II as his primary phone and flashed CM10 with the original partition layout using the iNAND for app data storage to get the full 1 GB for app installs. And wow, this phone flies! I almost want to use my i9000T again as my primary phone because its so fast. Apparently, the i9000T I have is using the faster iNAND chipset for storage and its night and day difference vs. my i9000M with the MoviNAND storage.
I wonder if its also because I'm using the SD Card hack on my i9000M since the internal is damaged on there so I'm running Android on the external memory card but I did not expect this much of a difference in speed between the two. Everything is just so much smoother on the i9000T running 4.1.2. Almost faster than my Galaxy Nexus if I had to go by feel alone. They're working on porting 4.2 at the moment and I'll most likely flash it to the phone when the time comes. I wonder why Samsung used different chipsets on the Galaxy S line when the performance speed is so noticeable between the two.

I've been reading a lot of people having issues with the recent 4.2 update so I wouldn't be surprised if its the cause. Personally, I haven't had any issues but I came from a clean install on both my 7 and Galaxy Nexus so maybe the clean install is why I don't have the same issues. If it still reboots randomly then something is messed up. A factory reset usually fixes that.

also, on my GNex, I've been getting this here and there:

also, while I'm enjoying the new "Swype" like keyboard, I've been a long time "Swyper"... I don't like having to press the shift key just to get to some other keys like the comma, question mark, exclamation etc etc... before you just long press whatever button and you'd have it, is there a way I can change that?
My wife just came back from a business trip in China. She says everyone there are using Galaxy Notes (or similar device) during the meetings. The only people using iPhones were the women.
So this has been making the rounds:
http://www.theverge.com/2012/11/23/3...-4-lte-support
Anandtech confirms Band 4 LTE support 1700/2100 MHz frequencies with bandwidths of 5, 10, 20 MHz:
http://www.anandtech.com/show/6474/n...-on-band-4-aws
So there you go. Nexus 4 has limited LTE support. I guess this also holds true that once T-Mobile's LTE network is deployed the Nexus 4 would be ready for it. Some people on AT&T are saying it also works for them so I guess its just a matter of finding out which cities support the 1700/2100 MHz frequencies here in the US. People in Canada will probably have a higher chance of getting LTE to work since 1700/2100 is used with Wind and a few other carriers.

So my dad has the note 2 and since we have unlimited data tmobile blocks the wifi hotspot. So he wanted me to root his phone. Did it, apparently also the tmobile version doesnt have the multiscreen version yet. Only international version. So i flashed a ROM that had tethering access and the multiscreen support ported over from the international versions. Works pretty good. He said it may be faster also
anyone else experiencing random rebooting on the N7 and Gnex with 4.2? It's not really a big deal.... it only happens every so often, maybe once a day that I've noticed. But yesterday, my gf called me while she was at work, which is kinda unusual because we usually text (especially if she's at work), and she sounded like she was sad about something or had some bad news to tell me. Just as I asked her if everything was alright, my GNex rebooted, thus getting cut off, but of course, I didn't know... so I assumed that it was a very long pause from my question. Now, I started freaking out because I was expecting her to tell me something bad or sad. I was like... "hello? WHAT'S WRONG??" then looked at my phone to realize that we had been cut off due to the rebooting
^No issues so far here other than the Google Sign in thing although it hasn't happened today so I'm guessing it was a server issue. I am also running a different kernel although that shouldn't matter too much. In fact, should make it worst cause they're all alphas. The only thing I can recommend is to do a factory reset. Usually, that gets rid of problems that arise after an official update as stuff gets left behind that shouldn't be which sometimes leads to stability issues. Although, I hear an update should be coming out soon to fix the December missing issue and other things.
So after ~5 years on iOS, I'm making the jump to android. Currently have the iPhone 4S 64GB, and was just getting super bored of iOS. Bought an AT&T GS3 off ebay for about $400. I was really debating the GS3, One X, and Nexus 4. While I think the One X looks the best and has the best screen, I heard that the root and boot loader unlocking is a pain in the ass, and HTC has made some deep edits to software so its very hard to shake sense. N4 also looked nice, but I've been yearning for LTE for awhile, and coming from a 64 GB phone, i really don't think 16GB will cut it for me. Factor in the wait time in the play store and so I defaulted to the GS3.
I'm excited but a little nervous. A few years ago I had a very brief dabble with Android (gingerbread, galaxy S I), and I wasn't a fan. But I've decided that the OS has finally hit a maturity point and has gotten pretty enough to sway me from iOS. I'll still be keeping my iPhone around just in case.
Any tips for a first time androider?

The thing about Android is that there's a TON of customization. And all without having to jailbreak/root.
But one thing you'll hate coming from iPhone will be the apps department.
I had the iPhone for two years and switching to Android, the lack of apps hit me hard. But I haven't turned back ever since because I love Google's innovation in every Android OS release.
Yay another gs3 user! I gotta say this phone is pretty damn amazing! In a way getting this phone was good for me. I got some nice touch wiz features while also getting 4.1/4.2 goodies. And this camera is good!! I believe its better than the N4
Just watch a bunch of videos on YouTube if you plan to root as they usually go step by step with download links on how to do it. ODIN/Heimdall will be your friend for Samsung phones as they will help you flash custom recoveries, kernels and back to stock if need be. For the most part, you won't need root access unless you plan on going crazy with customizations. Stock Android without root access is already pretty customizable from the get go but if you want to dig further then you would need to root.
Also note that there are two different types of ROMs: Vanilla Android and stock TouchWiz ROMs. The features between the two aren't interchangeable for the most part so if you really want/need the TouchWiz features, then you shouldn't look into Vanilla Android ROMs. That's something further than you need to get into when first using Android though. Also, bookmark the XDA forums for anything and everything regarding the device. Every question you can possibly have is already answered there although it could be a little daunting orienting yourself on the first go through.

So, I'm going to order my Note 2 on Verizon later today.
Is there any special promotion that's running at the moment?
If not, I guess I'm gonna just pay $299+tax to order it.

The increase of N4 backs cracking is really disturbing, yet somehow not totally unexpected. Think I'll wait till next year after CES and possibly MWC to decide on my next phone. Just suck it up and deal with shitty OEM skins then.
