Android: Phone News and Discussion Thread
They haven't mentioned anything about it yet. Hopefully, its an upgrade but I wouldn't mind paying for that.
Well the T-Mobile S3 got the Jelly Bean update first then Sprint and now AT&T. The only one holding out is surprise surprise Verizon. Its probably not too far off though. The multi-tasking update has been showing up in leaked S3 Jelly Bean updates so it should be coming soon as well. XDA should have it if you really want it.

same here.
i asked him the same question he said he's not sure. I have the paid version as well (although i got it for free on the amazon appstore when it was free)
ohh nice, yea you should have JB on it already unless you said no to the update, or just force the phone to check for it. I took my dads S3 a week ago? And he just had gotten the update well he had to check for it. But now i'm rooted and running a custom ROM, which actually doesnt seem to change much...
Release date is unknown at this point, but will be shortly after the beta, which is also unknown at this point (unless you consider "soon" as a time).
The only real issue at the moment is hardware acceleration. 480p content plays perfectly fine. However, anything 720p and above will lag because hardware acceleration hasn't been enabled yet within its built-in video player. They're still trying to finalize which Android devices will get it or something. There is a mod, however, that allows you to select which video player app you want to use to enable video hardware acceleration but right now its all over the place. You can get more info about XMBC and the plugins here:

Google I/O 2013 set for May 15-17. A month earlier than previous I/Os. Maybe we'll see Key Lime Pie then.

Even though I have a Nexus, they should slow down on the upgrades, or at least make them more polished.....unless KLP is gonna be what 4.2 should have been.
I wish I could go.
Don't have that kind of money laying around. Although the freebies they give out would probably even it out. Lol. They're also trying to make it more and more exclusive to devs as it should be. I don't mind the updates since most of the apps are backwards compatible. As long as you're on Froyo onwards, you're pretty much able to run any app in the Play Store at the moment.

Yeah, but Google Now is really the big thing. If they made that work for at least Gingerbread and up, then they'd really have some muscle.
I agree on the price. You are really paying for the free stuff you get.
My biggest rage would be if they release a Nexus 4 32gb with LTE, like I think they will....

Loving the 4.2 right now.
Spent a week in Brazil, and Google Now was great. Lot's of handy info on hand.
The gesture input has been very good, much better than the Swype that I used to have.

other than the occasional self reboots, I'm really liking my Galaxy Nexus even more now. I gotta admit, when the GSIII came out, I was kinda wishing I didn't get the GNex... plus it didn't help that I did a shitty job in applying the screen protector (I've always sucked at doing that), so a couple months ago, I was a mall and had one of those Ghost Armor Kiosk do my screen and Wow! It made such a difference... screen now doesn't even look like it has any screen protector at all... Between the better looking screen and the new 4.2 update... it's like I have a new phone again

Download and sideload it. It won't work in Chrome but any of the other browsers that utilize flash will work with it (AOSP browser, Dolphin, Firefox, Tint, HoloWeb)
Flash works fine. Its just not in the Play Store anymore:

You will need to enable "Unknown sources" inside the Settings --> Security option.
The other option is to download the file on your computer, transfer it to your phone's SD Card. Use a file explorer on your phone and navigate to the APK. Install.
Another option is to email yourself the APK and install via the GMail app.
Finally, there's the ADB way. Most complex but once you have ADB set up you can open a terminal window on your computer and do an "ADB install nameofapk.apk"
Any of the above will work.
Hey asianspec, you wanna see how your battery life is and let me know, i wanna compare so i know whether my ROM is good or not. I havent had this phone long enough on stock to know normal battery life.
Just before you recharge, if you can mention how long its been off the charger and screen on time. Screenshots if you want but just mention it is fine also.

The store does the download/install for you.
sideloading means getting the apk from somewhere,
putting it on your phone, and installing it yourself.
This is pretty much the only way to put an app on a phone which google play deems 'incompatible' for some stupid reason.

SwiftKey? I don't think that will suit my needs. What I need is an app that turns my text from, "C'mon home baby, I need to get inside you!" to "Thinking of you."
I could use something like that since I seem to be pressing send before I realize that I sound like a douche.. Invent an app for that and you'd be a rich person.

yours got shipped out real fast. ordered mine on 27th too but with 2-3 week shipping. couldn't place a order because it was jammed for about and finally got the order through with the "holding down enter trick"
So the ROM flashing bug just bit me. Decided to flash Xylon 4.2.1 with the modded animations and recent apps:

Animations look like so and are pretty cool:
I think this will hold me off until CM 10.1 officially releases and becomes stable. At the moment, this has Quiet hours and the Quick Settings mod so I'm happy:

Google Now just got updated. Now pulls your boarding pass (United Airlines only for now) and you can post to Google+:

Pretty cool, Google now can tag songs for you if you ask "What song is this":

I wonder what other enhancements they added. Droid-Life had a list but there has to be more:

They really should just bundle everything under Google Now, since it does all of the following already:
Google Translate
Google Goggles
Google Music Search
etc...
then bundle all the Messaging options under Google Talk. So much cleaner and productive.

Yikes! Don't take the nexus 4 to any concerts

If only there was a phone with awesome mics that could record extremely loud audio without it sounding like pure shit...

Apparently you never used a Galaxy S with Voodoo recording then...
Plenty more samples on YouTube if you want. Search for Voodoo Recording Galaxy S. This mod works on pretty much all international Galaxy S I, II, III / Nexus S lines with the Wolfson DAC. Sure its not a stock setting at default but its nothing new really. I've taken my Galaxy S to an Usher concert (not Rock, yes) but recording was quite great with the Voodoo recording mod and I've talked about it somewhere here before like 2 years ago.
Okay maybe more like 1 year and 11 months. Here's my post on it:

Yeah because that's such a daily situation for everyone who uses a cell phone.
Seriously though, the Nokia Lumia 920 has a great camera/video recorder. There's no denying that. But basing your phone choice on something that isn't of every day occurence is silly.

Want. I hope they release soon.
